Washington, Nov. 17. Sr.ti
confusion exists as to the fuKMsn
of the fish commission whir;. :
about to meet here. The present
commission comes together with
no other power than that of fne
conference U.oi the question,
which practically has been an
open one as long as this country
has had an existence. Briefly
stated, it has been from the beginning-
the claim of the United
States that whatever privileges the
treaties with Great Britain recog
nized as due to Americans were
original rights, and were not in
any sense grants or concessions
for which something could be de
manded in return. In other words,
when territory once under con
trol of Great Britain was divided,
the partition related to land alone,
rights upon the waters remaining
common to the vessels of both
nations. This the Britons have
always denied. Treaties and ar
rangement heretofore made have
been makeshifts, securing recog
nition of our rights in ono way or
another, but merely for the time
being, whilst postponing the main
question definitely.
Storm On Bhoalwater Bay.
The storm of last Friday and
Saturday was the most severe that
has been experienced for ten or
fifteen years in this count. Cat
tle on the tide land across from
South Bend stood in water up to
their middle and many had to
keep their heads above the water
to keep from drowning. Large
quantities of drift wood came
down from all the streams. The
wreck of the Tcssie Niclcerson,
which had become embedded in
the sand, off Bruceport, washed
up and went a drift in the channel
and the steamer Favorite nearly
run into it in the fog. Nearly all
the traps on North river and all
the set nets, were washed out.
Journal 17-
The cannery at North river be
longing to P. J. McGowan and
sons, has closed for tie season.
The Long Island has also closed.
At the latter cannery something
over 5,000 ceges were packed.

TLo Wicked Bnstle.
The la ct baptismal incident is
related by a dignified judge oi
the Miprome court of Minnesota.
A colored (ongrt-gation wtre out
on the border of a conveniently
located Like attending the immer
sion of a harve-ht of yourg con
verts gathered in at a recont re
vival. Among the candidates for
the rite was a strapping great mu
latto woman whose ample propor
tions were enhanced by a bustle,
itself of no mean dimensions.
When she went into the water the
minister found the bustle a stum
bling block to his holy work. It
acted as a buoy for the candidate,
floating her up when the minister
Attempted to put her under -the
water. After he had expeiimented
two or three times with the can
didate, each time being defeated
in his purpose by the bustle, one
of the dus-ky bred ren on the shore
yelled out.
"Crowd dat ar bus'le under de
water, parson; crowd it under; it's
de wickedest thing you've cot to
deal with."

"When yon feel a kind of goneness
about'the f.omacb it is a sign that
your fooil does not sit well and that
you are about to liavo a fit of indiges
tion. '
"When you begin to feel nervous
and are unable to sit still comfort
ably; when your clothes suddenly
seem to lose their fit and become too
tight in places the fit of indigeslion
is surely upon you.
"When this fit of indigestion is re
peated from day to day it finally re
solves itself into dyspepsia.
Chronic dyspepsia will, surely
make the happiest life a hell upon
earth.
Remember that three to ten of
Branmietii's Pills will cure the
worst case of indigestion or dyspep
sia, or both, and that a regular
courfc of them, say two every night
for a week or ten days will 'act as u
preventive of either complaint.
In Volapuk, the new language,

the ridiculous mouse the mount

Have you taken a cold? You can
.cure it promptly with Aver'h Cher

throat and lung troubles.

A machine has been invented
that will "sew on 3,000 buttons in

contain over 2,700 buttons.
