Around many ot the watering
places in the pine forests of Ore
gon and California the trees of the
pinus pondcrosa m:iv e een
stripped of lheirbark for the space
of three or four feet, near the base
of the trunk. This has been ac

hatchet a.line around tho tree as
high up as one could conveniently
reach, and another lower down, so
that tho bark, severed above and
below, coiild be removed in strips.
At certain seasons of the year a
mucilaginous film (the liburnum)
separates the bark from the wood
of the trunk. Part of this film ad
heres to each surface and may be
scraped off. The resulting mix
ture of mueilajjc cells and half
formed wood is nutricious and not
unpalatable, so that, as a last re
sort it may be used as a defense
against starvation. The frequency
with which signs of its having
been resorted to are met with

The Origin of The Word "Boodle"
The word "boodle" has zone
into the United States language.
Eastern newspapers, even those of
Boston, use it without quotation
remarks. We believe the word
originally appeared in the Com
mercial Gazette in a report of the
great American express robbery
in Cincinnati a few years ago.
One Sunday afternoon a ono-horse
waeron was driven ud to the olhce
on Race street, a small iron travel
ing safe loaded on and taken
across the river into Kentuckev
and rifled. Larry Hazen, the
lamous 01a aeiecuve, was era'
ployed by the express company to
work ud the case, and he suc
ceeded in recovering most of the
monev. When met bv a reporter
at the station, after the lucky cap
ture, Hazen threw up his hands
and exclaimed, "Wevo got the
boodle!" The word was after
wards used to denote money used
for dishonest purposes in local
politics, and disreputablo politi
cians in the city and state came to
be known as "boodlers," and their
party as the "boodle party." The
word spread in usage and is now
common throughout the country.
