About sixty vessels have come to an end ofF Vancouver Island, where the British ship Duchess of Argyle now lies full of water. The. John A Briggs is also ashore. According to the Heppner Gazette a strange phenomenon was witnessed there Saturday. Up in Sheepdip canyon the frost loosened up some choke-cherries, and they fell over board and floated down Willow creek, past Heppner town. When they reached the stream's mouth they so puckered it that the water backed up and drowned several fish. Two residents qualified this week for admission to the insane asylum: J. Chicago, Nov. 11, xook. Engel, Parsons. Spies and Fischer were hanged at 11:51 this morning. All four died of strangulation, none of the necks being dislocated. Their struggles were fearful fo witness. All died bravely proclaiming themselves martyrs and glorying in their death for the cause of anarchy. Every precaution against an outbreak was taken by the authorities, but not the slightest disturbance was re ported. SPEECHES OK THE SCAFFOLD. Chicago, Nov. 11. The jail was guarded all da by a large force of police with Winchester rifles. No one was allowed within a block of the jail without a pass. The four condemned men ate a hearty lunch and each drank a glass of brandy be fore ascending the scaffold. All spent the greater portion of the forenoon in writing private letters to relatives and friends. At one time all united in singing the "Marseillaise.'' Mrs. Parsons, being refused admit tance to the jail, created a scene on the outside and was arrested and taken to the police station. The last words of the four dead anarchists were as follews: Spies said, "There will como a time when our silence will be more power ful than the voices they are Strang ling to death now.' Engel said: "Hurrah for anarchv." Fischer said: "Hurrah for an archy. This is the happiest moment of my life.' Parsons said: "May I be allowed to speak? Will you "let rao speak, Sheriff Matson? Let the voico of the people be heard." HAKGIKG AT IiAFAYlTTK. Lafayette, Nov. 11. R. E. Marple was hanged at ten minutes to one o'slock. Ho made a speech on the scaffold protesting his innocence aud claiming that his execution was mur der. Whilo Sheriff Harris was ad justing the noose Marple said, "Don't choke me; if yon had an ax you would make a shorter job.' In consequence the sheriff did not get the knot properly adjusted and Marplo's neck was not broken by the fall and he choked to death. He persisted to the end that the murder was committed by Masons, and also scored his lawyer, II. Y. Thompson, whom he characterized as his worst enemy. At the end of fourteen min utes tho heart ceased .beating, and at the end of eighteen minutes he was pronounced dead. THE ALLEGED REASONS 1'or The Abandonment of Fort Caubv. During tho recent effort on the part of Astoria, Portland, Oregon and Washington in general to stay the unjust abandonment of Fort Canby by the two compinies of artillery stationed there, our congressional delegation made able and urgent ap peal to the war department, giving cogent reasons against tho policy of such abandonment. Senator J. N. Dolph, who was iu Washington, made particular effort, and had the order not passed the ap proval of the acting secretary of war it is believed that Oregon's senior senator could have secured a revo cation of the order. In answer to one of senator Dolph's personal efforts to at least know in" what way this order was secured, he received the follewing: letter from gek. dbumm. Wab Depaktmekt, 1 Adjutant Gekebal's Office, V Washington, Oct. 24, 1887. ) Hon. Joseph N. Dolph, V. S. Senate, wasiunrjion, u. u. Sir.: Referring to our interview this morning in regard to the abandonment of Fort Canby, at the month of tho Co lumbia river, in Washington territory, I find, upon examination, thntorders were issued by the Lieutenant General com manding tho army, with the approval of the acting Secretary of war, on the 12th instant, directing that the post of Fort Canby bo discontinued and the two bat teries stationed nt that point, be trans ferred to tho Presidio of San Francisco. Tho reasons for this action appear to be these: When this post was established in 18C4, tho site upon which the works hare since been partially erected, com manded tho channel at tho entranco to tho Columbia river: since that time how ever, it has been discovered that the main ship channel, through which ves sels passed in and out the river, has, in consequence of the change of currents and shifting of tho sand and silt of the river, moved quite four miles away from the nearest point of Capo Disappoint ment. An officer, who has recently made a special inspection of the vicinity, reports that the batteries at Fort Canby are not even visible from the ship channel, being situated on the high hills on the inside bight of the bay; the flagstaff even is not discernible, and not even tho shadow of a present defense is apparent to the passerby. There aro other reasons whv the con tinuance of tho garrison at this point is deemed impracticable; such as the ex pense of transportation to and from the point; that the prices of the supplies of fuel and forage at that post are among the highest in the department of the Co lumbia; the works themselves arc incom plete, and tho guns that have been mounted arc practically worthless; could be of little avail in preventing the en trance of nrmed vessels to the river, and are even practically useless for tho in struction of the troop I am, sir, very respectfully, Your obedient servant, R. C. Dbuziit, Adjutant General. Wanted, A girl for general housework in a small family at Fort Stevens. Apply to P. G. Eastwick, Fort Stevens, or to J. N. Griffin, Astoria. THROUGH BY DAYLIGHT. An Improvement and. Convenience that Astoriaus Will Surely Appreciate. How often it has been thought and said, while steaming up and down the Columbia, "Why wouldn't it be a good idea to have a boat run at nightf The idea is to bo acted on. Mr. E. A. Noyes yesterday gave The Astoriax the welcome news that superintendent Holcomb, of the O. R. & N. Co., had decided to run a night boat carrying mail and passengers between this city and Portland. The order has been given to Mr. Johnson, and as soon as the Ji. It. Thompson can be put in proper trim she will go on the route. The intention is to leave here at say six o'clock in the evening, arrive in Portland about four or five a. m., leave Portland at eight or nine v. m.s and arrive here at six A. si. The convenience and improvement of this new arrangement will be seen at a glance. As it is now and has been, one goes on board the boat here at night, so as not to be left in the morning, aud when he wakes he finds himself still at the dock. Then the boat starts and the greater part of the day is spent in u weary way: the next day he transacts his business, sleeps on board that night, or hurries down from the hotel, and tho greater part of the third day is taken up by the homeward journey. rXDKR THE NEW WAY Ono can go on board, tako a room, go to sleep comfortably, and wake in Portland, all day can bo devoted to business, on board the boat at 8 r. ar., another easy night, sleeping as sound ly as if at home, and on wakiug the boat has arrived at Astoria, a clear saving of two days" time and lots of vexatious delay. Aud this is not tho only conven ience. Instead of waiting as now un til four and five and six o'clock for mail, we can get it in the morning that is if Uncle Sam will spend a few of the big silver dollars with which the TJ. S. treasury is bursting aud provide A THROUGH MUh POUCH To Astoria. Supt. Holcomb says that if a through mail pouch is pro vided he will sec that all tho mail for Astoria goes right through on the evening of arrival. The importance of this will be seen when it is stated that to-morrow a change of lime goes into effect on the N. P., O. R. & N. and O. S. L. Hues so that tho eastern train will get into Portland late in the after noon, instead of a quarter past ten iu tho mormug, as at present. Now this mail will get into Portland from the east eighteen hours earlier than it has. Even now it lies in Port land all night, but when it gets in from the east IS hours sooner on the new schedule, aud is put on board the Astoria boat and delivered here at 6 in tho morning iustead of G in the evening it will put Astoria TJIIRY nOURS NEARER TnE EAST. Time is money, and in this way the increased facilities furnished by Supt. Holcomb will be a saving of money and an appreciated conveni ence to every resident of Astoria. The Astorian is glad to see this idea put into practical shape, and that the O. R. & N. Co., has given re cognition to tho suggestion concprn iug tho desirability of such a scheme. The present day service of the compauv's boats between Portland and this city will in no way bo .:f fected by the placing on the route ol ! tho 7?. ft. Thompson to run by xii.n. She will shortly go on, and should the experiment meet with tho pat ronage and encouragement that is expected, a permanently established night travel aud increased mail service between the two largest cit ies of the state will be the result.
