God reigns, and American govern ment is not a failure in Oregon. It is noted that timber that has been floated down rivers is not subject to dry-rot The water dissolves the salts and albumen. A member of the legislature of Nova Scotia has been expelled from that body for hiring carriages to convey voters to the polls. Brooklyn cast a tremendous vote yesterday. In 1884 there was a regis tration of 127,704 votes and this time the number aggregated 129,688. TmiiTY thousand persons were thrown out of employment at Nashua, N. H., because a muskrat dug a hole in a canal bank, -which resulted in the breaking of an embankment and a rush of water. The board of education at Kings ton, Ont, has issued an order under the public school laws expelling from the public schools all Roinan Catholic children whose parents are supporters of a separate school system. The Boston Transcript, which knows all about such things, says that if you want to get a good idea of tumultuous motion you should watch the agitation of the bustles of two women dancing a hop waltz. A New Jersey eccentric has had this inscription put on his son's grave grave seone: "Ho came to his death the 12th of Ootober, 1884, by the hand of a careless drag clerk and two excited doctors, at 12 o'clock at night, in Kansas City." Between 8,000 and $10,00 of the money raised in St Louis for the en tertainment of the Grand Army men in that city was not expended, and it is now proposed to use it to secure the national political conventions that will meet next year. The continuous decrease of crime in England is very remarkable. So recently as 18G9 the prisons contained no loss than 11,500 convicts. In July last there were only 7,441. The edu cation act marked the turning point in the history of crime. Since the passage of that act the decrease of crime has been steady. The latest at this hour, (3:30 a. m.,) is that prohibition is defeated in this state by about 7,000' majority. Prob ably a finer day than yesterday would have permitted a larger vote, and an even more emphatic refusal on the part of Oregon to accept the idea The vote speaks for itself. As in Michigan, Tennessee, and Texas, so this progressive state refuses to sub mit to cast iron dogma and by so do ing shows that the spirit of American freedom is not lacking in this com monwealth. Another search of cells this morning was made with the result of the finding of a red cord three or four feet long in Liugg's cell. The cord was long and strong enough to have permitted the use of it for strangling purposes. The wive3 and mends of the doomed men were not admitted to the jail this morning, this being a holiday.
