of the world doesn't come to-dav.
What Astoria needs is less strife
and more harmony. Prohibition pro
hibits harmony and seta everybody
watching everybody else.
Abe your taxes high enough in this
city? If not; if you want to pay more
to keep things going, Tote for pro
hibition. The expenses -vron't stop
even though nearly half the present
revenue does. But the liquor'll be
drank all the same.
The time for argument is past Ev
ery one is "sot" one way or the other,
and seven columns for or against pro
hibition wouldn't change any one.
In this case, however, there is no dan
ger of a hung jury. There will bo a
verdict by six o'clock.
There will be elections to-day in
Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York,
New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania,
and Virginia. Next to onr own little
dispute the most interest centers in
the New York contest
Ami the foreign officers present at
the autumn maneuvers of the French
army received decorations, except the
English and Germans. There was
about one bushel of crosses and rib
bons given out, and the United States
officers present camo in for their
share.
In a fight with hostile Crow Indians,
near the Little Horn river, Montana,
agency, last Saturday, three United
States troops were killed. Sword
bearer, the chief, was among the In
dians killed. The rest will fat up at
the agency now that cold weather is
coming on, and be in trim for the an
nual fall fight next year.
Two tilings alone have surprised us
in this little discussion that ends to
daymen whom we know who have as
sured us that they were going to vote
for prohibition, and men whom we
know who have assured us that they
-were going to vote against it It's a
mixed mess and illustrates the differ
ent effect of different arguments on
different minds.
Six dynamite bombs were found in the
cells of the condemned Chicago anar
chists last Sunday. Petitions for par
don are being sent by the bushel to
Gov. Oglesby. Should he stand firm
and allow justice to outweigh maud
lin sympathy, the seven will hang
next Friday. But he will probably
commute the sentence of three of
them.
The fire department is mighty handy
in case of a fire. It cost 6,236.81 to
run it last year. If you want prohibi
tion worse than fire protection vote
for prohibition, and should your house
burn up or down for want of proper
facilities you can cuss the city for not
having the fire department in proper
trim. Water on a fire is free, but it
costs like sixty to run a fire depart
ment It is easy to pull down. Any one
can destroy. A match in the hand of
a child could burn Westminster Ab
bey. But once destroyed 'tis slow
and expensive building again. Ameri
can liberty; freedom and the rights of
man, have cost considerable blood
and treasure. If you prefer surren
dering your conscience to other's
keeping, if you really believe our gov
ernment is founded on a mistake, why
vote for prohibition. A man has a
right to be wrong if he wants to but
he shouldn't abuse the privilege.
Make the saloonB pay their share,
at least, of the expense of running
the city. Why should those of us
who have homes -and property pay
more taxes piled on top of those we
pay now, and let liquor go free? Bus
iness is business. The theory part of
. prohibition is fine. But when it
comes to actual practice; when you
have to go down in your pocket and
dig up nearly all you have saved to
pay for running the city, and yet see
that the liquor is drank anyhow, may
be you won't be so strongly in favor
of voting for prohibition. This is the
lesson taught by communities that
try earnestly to enforce it, but wish
they were fairly rid of it

trouble between the whites and ne
croes culminated last mcht in a
bloody riot. A crowd of negroes
were ordered to disperse by a band
of regulatora and refused, when the
regulators opened fire, whereupon
several negroes were killed.

Chicago, Nov. 7. Louis Liugg,
one of the seven condemned anarch
ists, was defiant and sullen this morn
ing. Every few moments he would
jerk his head around and stare
through the grated door with a wild
look. His favorite attitude was to
stand firmly erect, fold his arms over
his broad chest nnd gaze out, bristling
and ferocftms.
None of the anarchists were let out
of the cells, and jailor Folz says they
will not be. Mrs. Schwab, Mrs. En
gle and Mrs. Parsons came to see
their husbands, but tho best they
could do was to call out "good morn
ing," and send up papers. No pack
ages were allowed to go in. Nina
Van Zandt was there. "Good morn
ing," she called out to Spies. "Good
morning," he returned, and that was
the end of the dialogue between
them. She wrote a note which the
jailor read and sent to Spies. AH
mail and telegrams are torn open and
read. All private communications
with friends is stopped and will con
tinue to be until the day of execu
tion. THE GOVERNOR'S MAIIi.
Springfield, Ills., Nov. 7. The
governor's mail this morning was
composed of over one hundred letters
related to tho anarchists' case. This
is an increase over any previous day.
The requests for clemency are greater
than yesterday. Chicago furnishes
the bulk of the mail on this subject,
and a considerable number of letters
are marked "personal," or "confiden
tial" strong dynamite.
Chicago, Nov. 7. Sheriff Matson
has no doubt as to tho nature of tho
stuff found in Lingg's bombs. The
filling was taken out and exploded
and found to bo the strongest kind of
dynamite. The amnesty people have
their tablets on tho streets again but
there seems less disposition on the
part of the people to feign than on
Saturday and but few uamo3 were
seoured. It is reported that the
police discovered eleven dynamite
bomb3 secreted in tho house of an
anarchist near the gas works on
West Division street. The police
were looking up tho case ail day
yesterday and. have kept the discov
ery very quiet.
A FINE HOUSE DESTROYED.
Minneapolis, Nov. 7. Tho par
tially completed Mortimer apartment
house at Nicollet avenue and Thir
teenth street with threo residences
adjoining were burned to-day. The
Mortimer would have been the largest
and most expensive apartment house
outside of New York City. The loss
is one hundred thousand dollars,
with ninety thousand dollars insur
