An estimate was madesometime ago of the number of people in the world who speak English. The number made up from data which had been collected was found to exceed somewhat 100,- 000,000. Edwin Lawrence, of London, in a recent speech in Boston, stated that in 1790 about 19,000,000 peop.i .-poke English, 'iile Trench wr.d sjoken by 4.2, 000,000. Xow E-iirlish fs the common speech of 12-LO0O,0CO people, "and counting China, India aud Japan, there are doubtless 1GO,000,000 people who now speak Edglish." The cable messages of the world are sent in English. President Elliot said that in a tour through Spain, northern Africa, and Constantinople he found that English was available for the trav eler, although a few French worJs were sometimes convenient, in Switzerland he sat at a table with sixteen persons who in their na tional distribution spoke six differ ent languages, but he found that the only language which they all could speak was English. There would seem to be little need of the new cosmopolitan, or world language called "Volapuk," which has. recently been invented to supply what was held to be a common want, viz.: a language which could be spoken and under stood in all parts of the world. It is not necessary that any one language should be uni versal. There was a time when French, because it was spoken at most European courts, was thought to have the best prospect of uni versality. But the theory is no longer tenable. The use of Eng lish may never become universal; but it has made more rapid pro gress in the last century toward universality than any other tongue spoken by civilized nations. A dominating people arc sure to have a prevailing tongue. I hey are speaking through tho telegraph and telephone which they have in vented, aud to-day there is not a country of any importance under the heavens where English is not more less spoken. The gains of the last century are a suggestion of the advance of the next cen tury. English has become the language of conquest, of commerce, and largely of discovery. To the cosmopolitan it has a greater value than ever and has much to do with this later progress. TrxvO Trifle with any Throat &j) or Lunj: Disease. Sore Eyes The eyes are always in sympathy with the body, and afford an excellent index of its condition. "When the eyes become weak, and the lids inflamed and sore, it is an evidence that the system has become disordered by Scrofula, for which Ayer's Sarsaparilla is the best known remedy. Scrofula, which produced a painful in flammation in my eyes, caused me much suffering for a number of years. By the advice of a physician I commenced taking Ayer's Sarsaparilla. After using this medicine a short time I was completely Cured My eye3 are now in a splendid condi tion, and lam as well and strong as ever. Sirs. "William Gage, Concord, N. EC. For a number of years I was troubled with a humor in my eyes, and was u nable to obtain any relief until I commenced using Ayer's Sarsaparilla. This medi cine has effected a complete cure, and I believe it to be the best of blood puri fiers. C. E. Upton, Kashua, 2s". II. From childhood, and until with a few montlis, I have been anlictedwith"Voak and Sore Eyes. I have used for these complaints, with beneficial results, Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and consider it a great blood purifier. Mrs. C. Phillips. Glover, Yt. I suffered for a year with inflamma tion in my" left eye. Three ulcers formed on tho ball, depriving mo of sight, and causing great pain. After trying many othor remedies, to no purpose, Iwas fiual ly induced to use Ayer's Sarsaparilla. By Taking three bottles of this medicine I have been entirely cured. My sight has been re stored, and there is no sign of inflamma tion, sore, or ulcer in my eye. Kendal T. Bowcn, Sugar Tree Ridge, Ohio. My daughter, ten years old, was afflict ed with Scrofulous Sore Eyes. During the last two years she never saw light of any kind. Physicians of the highest standing exerted their skill, but with no permanent success. On the recommen dation of a friend I purchased a bottle of Ayer's Sarsaparilla, which my daughter commenced taking. Before she had used the third bottlo her sight was rcstoied. Her cure is complete.
