The case will be appealed. The Salvation army's paper, War Cry, says it is rough to have girls kept in a jail all night. So it is: but the girlies refused bail: they needn't have stayed in jail ten minutes if thev didn't want te: it was a case of choice, not of necessity. Bail was proffered and refused. A general alarm was quickly turned iu and the arrival of a score of engines caused a wild pauic among the guests of the Palmer house and Clifton house, which ad join the club-rooms on the east. Scores of guesls sprang out of bed and rushed in terror into the street with the impression that the hotel was on fire. Fifty streams of water were soon playing on the fire and torrents of water soon poured down the stair ways and elevator shafts, extinguish ing it. but completely ruining the furniture, pictures and everything in the club house. The largest three-masted schooner ever built on the Pacific coast is the J. F. Jewett. She is owned by the Gardiner Milling company, and was recently constructed at Port Ludlow by Middlemass & Boole to ply in the lumber trade between Umpqua river and San Pedro and San Diego. Her register is 452.49 tons, and her carrying capacity 6S0, 000 feet of lumber. She is ISO feet over all in length' with 150 feet of keel; her beam is 37 feet and her depth of hold 12 feet. The three lower masts are each 9C feet in length, and each of the top masts 45 feet, giving a total height of 141 feet. Her mizzen boom measures GO feet in length, main boom 42 feet and from jib-boom end to spanker-boom end is nearly 200 feet. She is supplied with patent steering and hoisting gear, as well as other modern appliauces, and on her maiden trip, with 620,000 feet of lumber, developed an average speed otll'A knots. This hole is perfectly round, and is beveled or counter suuk. It seems to have been made artificially and with great care. How is it to be accounted for? Anothor shell, the common cockle, which is found in great numbers all along our shores, has done the mis chief. It has a tongue, furnished with rows of teeth, giving it a resem blance to a file. When the little creature is hungry, it finds another shell containing a living inhabitant.
