C?J Witt gattxj gtsforau. ASTOKIA. OREGON: THURSDAY... .1.N0VEMBEK3. 18S7 If some folks had their way about this world how few people ccmld live comfortably in it i - The Massaclitisotts mugwumps who are politicians are employing their main strength in holding back the "inexperienced" from putting an inde pendent ticket in the field. The United Labor party has formed an organization in Charleston, S. C, and adopted a platform. It appears to be about equally supported by whites and colored people. The interprovincial conference which is in session in Quebec is said to be the most important gathering held in Canada since the conference of 1861, when the confederation was decided upon. The centennial exposition, which is to be held at Cincinnati next year, promises to be a very successful af fair. The sum of $1,100,000 in guar antee notes has been placed already in the hands of the commissioners. A cute citizen of Bridgeport, Conn., on presenting another's check for $24 at the bank recently, found there was only $23.37 to meet it He promptly deposited G3 cents to the other man's credit, then presented the check and got the money. John Jameson, of Dublin, is build ing a yacht to contest for the Ameri ca's cup next year. Well, England's Qenest a and Scotland's Thistle have been beaten by America. It is only fair to give Ireland a chance. The Dublin man's yacht will probably be called the Shamrock. A peculiab liquor law is on the statute books in Rockland county, Ga., where but one person in the county is permitted to sell liquor. He is appointed by the grand jury, can sell for medicinal purposes only, and cannot keep on hand more than ten gallons of spirits. Abistocratic circles at. Spokane Falls have been shocked by the dis covery that a smooth-spoken fellow, calling himself Wadsworth, and claim ing to be a banker, who married a society belle there, is an atrocious fraud. The fraudulent pretensions of the scamp were discovered fifteen minutes after the marriage ceremony had been performed. Telephone Lodging House. Best Beds in town. A Boy's Essay on 4,Wate r' The following is said to be the actual production of a boy who was directed to write a composition and selected the subject "Water:" "Water is found almost everywhere, especially when it rains, as it did the other day until our cellar was about half full. Jane had to wear father's rubber boots to get the onions for dinner. Onions make your eyes wa ter; and so does horse radish when you eat too much. There i3 a good many kinds of water in the world; ram water, soda water, well water, holy water and brine. There i3 a girl in our school named "Waterman. All the boys say, 'Waterman you are,' and then she gets mad. I don't think girls look good when they are mad. Water is used for a good many things. Sailors use it to go to sea on. If there wasn't any ocean their ships couldn't float, and they would have to go ashore. "Water is good to make dams in, and to fire at the boys with a squirt gun, end to catch fishes in. My father caught a big one the other day, and when we hauled it up it was an eel. Nobody could be saved from drowning if there wasn't any water to pull them out of. Water is first rate to put fires out with. I love to go to fires and see the men work the engines. This is all that x can think of now about water except the flood."
