m ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDyESDAYlZ! NOVEMBEK 2. 1887 .4 PROHIBITION STATE. Iowa is a prohibition state. Prohi bition (with a big P) flourishes in Iowa. So the prohibitionists say. Prohibition prohibits in Iowa. Of course; the prohibitionists say it does, so it must. But here are the figures from the in ternal revenue receipts of the United States last year: IOWA. Tax upon distilled spirits, $2,138, 65G.28; upon fermented liquors, 195, 693.52; penalties, $10,517.01; upon to bacco, $202,409.81; total, $2,547,281.62. For a state where prohibition is a success, there seems to be a heap of whisky payin&taxes in Iowa. These figures are official, are exact; they rep resent what has been receipted fer: there is no rubbing them out But they do not represent the addi tional thousands and tens of thousands of gallons of liquor smuggled down men's gullets in the Hawkeyo state, nor do they show the hundreds of lit tle dealers who take out no U. S. li cense. Let us all vote for free whisky and the amendment, and then prohibition will "be a "success" in Oregon the same kind of a success it is in Iowa The Astobian opposes prohibition because in its judgment prohibition is not American; it is an impossible the ory, a business mistake. Duty and to day are eurs: results and futurity be long to God. It is the duty of an American citizen to resent attacks on hispersonal liberty; to oppose infringe ment of his personal rights. If preju dice or inability to see results affect his judgment, it is unfortunate; but every man can only act from a sincere con viction, and whether for or against, it is a fair presumption that what he does is in accordance with his honest belief. The Astobian would be sorry to see prohibition carry, for it is its belief that if it did, it would but in augurate a bitter personal spying sys tem that would make this community and every community in the state unpleasant to live or do bus iness in. It is, however, unnec essary to discuss imaginary circum stances. The Astobian has too much faith in the good judgment, the busi ness sense, the sober, quiet reason of its readers to suppose that they will next Tuesday endorse by an affirma tive vote the present effort to accom plishthe impossible; to plunge the state in financial chaos in a chase af ter the ideal and unattainable. The mind of a bigot is like the pupil of the eye: the more light you pour on it, the more it contracts; but an unpreju diced judgment is always ready to re ceive impressions and act in accord ance with the light it receives. Are you in faror of the prohibition amendment? If not, please give your roaBons for opposing it. The above question asked Judge Matthew P. Deady, was answered by him as follews: ''I am not in favor of prohibition, because I know from experience and in the nature of things that prohibi tion is incapable of reasonable or practical enforcement Prohibition will put the liquor business into the hands of the worst and most irre sponsible elements in the community and thereby magnify the evils grow ing out of the use and sale of liquors. I want to see the sale of liquor gov erned by a good license law which will put it and keep it in the hands of comparatively respectable people who will not make it an engine of corrup tion and crime. Besides, I don't be lieve the state has the moral right to say -whether the individual should drink or not so long as he does not use liquor to excess. Nor do I think I ought to compelled to wear a straight jacket because my neighbor is out of his head, nor to be limited or restrained in my diet because my neighbor is afflicted with drunken ness." The strong rooted sensibility in women is the cause of their charac teristic persistency in all matters that depend in any considerable degree on sentiment It is in vain to combat sentiment with reasons. A woman with strong passions and fine sensibil ity will hold by her instincts, and leave your arguments to float, and in so-doing may, in some cases, be right; but if the case is one in which cool judgment and not keen feeling is to decide she will probably be wrong. Arguments in such cases are stronger with a man, because he is naturally less richly furnished "with sentiment or has trained himself to keep his sentiment in subjection; but with the woman it is omnipotent, as belonging radically to the constitution of her na ture.
