Prof. Lee is coming to tlii-. northwest coast on the U. S. fi!i commissioner's steamer Albutro$, which sails from New York lor here about the 20th inst. In talking upon the two 3 i-ar' sojourn of the Albatross. Prof. Lee says: "The groat possibilities of the Pacific waters was the late Prof. Baird's pet hobby. lie be lieved the resources of the north Pacific were fully as great, if not greater, than those of the Atlantic coast. In his opinion fishing in terests could be developed in a few years on the Pacific slope to the value of from 30,000,000 to 50,000,000 annually. Our last ad vices are that halibut and cod fish eries of the Pacific will prove more profitable than similar enter prises on the Atlantic coast. Our best information is that with prop er care the small herrings in these waters can be so multiplied as to justify the establishment of sar dine packing factories on the Pa cific slope. The product so closely resembles its European brother in size, color and taste as to make discovery of the difference almost impossible. Professor Jordan, who has given thissubject careful study, says the Pacific slope herring ure in every particular the equal of the European article, and would give equal satisfaction if put on the market." "Another part of our work will be to introduce among the Pacific slope fishermen the use of the gill net for cod fishing; to show them better and safer designs for build ing their ships, and in shorl to ad vance their interest in every possi ble manner by irivinsr them the benefit of our experiments and stud'.5 Ayer's Pills are an invaluable remedy for all diseases of the stomach, liver, and bowels. In an article unon "Thiers, the Historiographer," in the Temps of 1 ans, 2l. Anatole r ranee tells the followinir old Persian lecrend: The young shah, on succeeding to the throne, had the members ot the Academy of Science sum moned and told them he wanted to know the history of the past in or der to be able to reisrn with wis dom. "Write a history of the world," he said, "and be careful to make it complete." They went to work and came back after thir ty years, followed by a dozen of camels loaded with 500 volumes each. "For God's sake!" cried the shah, "I am an old man new: how shall find time to read all that stuff? Go make a svnorjsis of it." The academicians tried again. After twenty years they had re duced the 6,000 volumes to 1,500. "I am seventy years old; how can I read that much? Try again," was the king's order. After ten years they presented 500 volumes. "I am sure," said the deacon of the academy, "we have this time accomplished the shortest hand book possible." "No doubt you did vour best, but at 80 years of age how can I hope to read through that liarary? If you de sire your king to know the history of mankind before his death you must still reduce the bulk consid erably." Another five years passed away when the deacon, tot tering with age himself, led a don key with one thick volume on his back to the gate of the palace. He found the shah on his death bed. "I must die," he said, "with out knowing the history of man kind unless you can tell it me in a few words." "I can," said lhe deacon, "lell you the history of men in three words they were born, they suffered, thev died." Doctors' Bills. Five minutes before his death they held him erect and rigged him out in his best war costume. They painted him red, set his war bon net on his head, tied up his hair in beaver skins, and laid him down just as he died. Then his five wives took sharp butcher knives, slashed their faces with long, deep cuts, cut themselves in other places and beat their bleeding bodies and pulled their hair. They also burned everything they had, te pees, furniture, and even the most of the clothing they had on. A big crowd of bucks looked on and killed ten horses. That is, regular time according to the lines, some are 30, some 60, some 90 days, and mostly all i months, and at times of Ionjier periods, subject to the discounts if paid any time between time of purchase and the time tho bills become due.
