ASTORIA. OREGON:
TUESDAY NOVEMBElt 1, 1887
The vote on the prohibition amend
ment in Tennessee -was 200,000, the
largest ever cast in the state. The
adverse majority was 27,619.
' -
The Philadelphia Times -wants po
litical committees to publish financial
statements showing who contribute
campaign funds and to whom pay
ments are made. The Times is fond
of a jokes.
They are still trying in New York
to find out what party is now entitled
to representation in the boards of
election inspectors, on account of the
60,000 votes cast for Henry George
last fall.
The Chinese have an idea that the
humming of telegraph wire will inter
fere with the rest of their ancestors in
the numerous cemeteries; they there
fore stoutly resist the erection of tele
graph lines. The line from Pekin to
Europe will run across the Gobi des
ert to avoid the cemeteries.
A Washington dispatch says that
the Hobsonville, Tillamook county,
post office has been discontinued. In
stead of discontinuing these post of
fices their number ought to be in
creased in justice to outlying settlers,
who under a just government have
the same right to mail facilities as the
denizens of crowded cities.
Score one for Lillio Devereaux
Blake. Senator Ingalls, in his recent
article against woman suffrage, says:
"The beak, the talon, and thunderbolt
are the emblems of national authori
ty." And Miss Blake now caustically
informs him that the eagle that
screeches as our national emblem is a
female eagle. Wonder how did she
find that out !
The vote at the municipal election
in Newark, N. J., is very interesting
as a sort of preliminary test of the
drift of political sentiment In the
congressional election of last year the
vote of the city was: Bepublicjxn, 11,
239; Democratic, 11,127; labor, -1,283;
and prohibition, 1,188. The vote for
mayor last Tuesday was: Republican,
9,321; Democratic, 10,630; labor, 1,861;
and prohibition, 3,522. The labor
vote, it will bo observed, has fallen
away 60 per cent. The prohibitionists
gained about as many votes as the
labor ticket lost, but they apparently
came from the Republicans. The
Democratic vote is practically un
changed. Newark, it may be re
marked, is very near New York.
A. G. Menocaii, chief engineer of
the Nicaragua Canal company, says:
"We have been making arrangements
to send out eight engineering parties,
who will leave Greytown either on the
29th or 30th of November. The pre
liminary surveys are completed, and
their work will be to locate the route
of the canal, including dams, sites of
locks, etc. They will be equipped
with boring machines, and will ascer
tain the various strata to be excavated.
We expect that their work will be com
pleted in eight months, and that by
the 13th of July, if not before, the
work of excavation will begin. The
total cost will be about 65,000,000.
After completion we calculate that
one-half the revenue of the canal will
come from California, Oregon and
British Columbia products."
The philosopher of the Lincoln,
Neb., Journal says; "There is a man
in Lincoln who is generally disliked
because he is very sarcastic His
highest ambition in life seems to be to
say unpleasant things when there is
no occasion for it, and he is conse
quently avoided and his friends are
very few. Sarcasm is an elegant
weapon when judiciously used, but
the man who is naturally sarcastic is
a public nuisance, and he generally
figures inhis old age as a hypochon
driac and an outcast It is always.!
better to be agreeable than to be dis
agreeable, although a large number
of people do not seem to think so.
A genial tempered and good man is
always a favorite, even though he
may be somewhat dull, but a sour and
bilious man is never popular, although
he may be as bright as steel. A laugh
is always more heartily welcomed than
a sneer."
