An Account of the .Recovery of A. T Stewart's Body. New York, Oct. 29. The mas tery which has so long enveloped the' fate of the body of the mill ionaire dry goods dealer, Alex. T. Stewait, forms the subject of :i chapter in superintendent "Wnll ing's book which is soon to be published. The ex superintendent professes to give only a true story of the stealing of the body, and al leges that the body was subse quently returned to a. representa tive of .Tudcrc Hilton. The re mains were buried in St. Mark's churchyard, corner of Second ave nue and Tenth street, in an under ground vault, the on trance to which was covered by a flagstone, which in turn was sodded over level with the surrounding sur face, so there was no outward evi dence oi its location. After the theft of the body the first clue came from Gen. Patrick H. Jones, ex-postmaster of New York, who notified Walling that an ex-soldier, who had served un per him, claimed to know some thing about Stewart's body, and with proper encouragement would give informntion leading to its re covery. 1 he superintendent sub mitted the offer to Judge Hilton, who declared he would never pay one cent for Mr. Stewart's bones unless they came accompanied br the thieves in irons. Gen. Jones, a few days later, gave to the police a package ex pressed to him from Boston, con taining a coffin-plate, which was identified bv the engraver who had done the work. To complete their identification the robbets sent a piece of paper that fitted exactly a hole in the velvet cover of the coffin, cut out by the thieves when the body was removed. Judge Hilton remained unalter able and the case was dropped by the authorities. In January, 1882, Gen. Jones called at headquarters. He brought a parcel which contained the silver knobs and several of the handles belonging to the coffin in which body had been buried. He also showed some letters which he had received, They purported to have been written in Canada, and 4-T- n . Ro maine." One letter, which con tained the piece of paper, promised if further proof were required to tend the coliiu plate, upon the in sertion of err tain personals in the New York Hem hi. This was done. Under date of Boston, January 31, 1S70, a letter came, saj'ing the plate was sent from theic to avoid the scrutiny of custom officials on thd Canadian border. The plate was received and identified. Gen. Jones was instructed that in case the relatives were ready to negotiate for the remains to insert this personal in the Herald: "Canada: Will do business. Counsel." This was done at Judge Hilton's request. The reply which came from Boston on the 11th of February set "forth the terms upon which the body would be restored. They were as follews: First, the amount to be paid shall be 200,000; sec ond, the body will be delivered to yourself and Judge Hilton within twenty-five miles of the city of Montreal, and other persons shall be present; third, the money to be placed in your hands, or un der your control, until Judge Hil ton is fully satisfied, when j-ou will deliver it to my representa tives; fourth, both parties to main- rain lorevcr unbroken silence in regard to the transaction. Judge Ilillon refused to arrree to the terms proposed, and further declined to negotiate through the medium of personals. "Roumaine" soon ordered Mr. Jones to break off all communications with Judge Hilton and opeu negotiations with Mrs. Stewart. No notice was ta ken of this request, but in March Judge Hilton made an offer of 25,000 for the body. Gen. Jones made the fact known to "Rou maine," who respectfully but firm ly declined. This closed the cor respondence. The robbers, becoming discour- ( aged, now offered to selllthe body lor SlUU.UUU. Mrs. Stewart was willing and ordered her represen tatives to pay the amount. They delayed matters until the figure was reduced to 20,000, whiclfwas accepted. The conditions of delivery were severe. Some time before morning, if the man was acting in good faith, and was not accompanied or followed by detective-, he would be met and given further directions. A young relative of Mrs. Stew art's undertook the hazardous task, and was met by the theives, and after the money was delivered and certain forauties earned out, the body was delivered to him. Next night the bodv was conveyed to the cathedral. An empty coffin had already been deposited in the cathedral. At dead of night two men transferred the bones to it from a trunk. They then placed the coffin in an inaccessible vault beneath the dome. If any one should again touch, unbidden, the vault which holds the bones of the merchant millionaire, the touch would re lease a hidden spring, which would shake the chimes in the tower and send an instant alarm throughout the tow n.
