A Tough Turtle.
John Buckley, while roaming
about in the woods the other day,
says the Meriden Journal, came
acioss a snapping - turtle. He
brought it into the city and ever t
since the hard-shelled captive has
had the floor of the Central tele
phone office to itself. Saturday
night John thought he would kill
the animal and olish up the shell
as vn ornament. To insure a speedy
demise he let the turtle snap at
the end of a wire, which it did,
hanging on to it like a vice. John
then applied another wire under
the shell and turned on the current
of the entire telephone circuit.
The turtle, on feeling the shock,
gave another bite, held on tighter,
shut the shell to, and John
hoard the current go through it
making a noise like a small plan
ing machine. After five minutes
he removed the wires and the tur
tle was apparently lifeless. He
laid it on the floor and thought he
would open it the day. What
was his surprise on coming down
next morning to find the hard
shelled corpse walking all over the
floor and as hungry as a hired
man. John was as completely
surprised as the turtle must have
been when it had the wire in its
teeth and the current was first
turned on. The shock of elec
tricity, if applied to a man, is
strong enough to take his clothes
off, and would take away his am
bition for work for some time, pos
sibly killing him.

Mar. 17, 1884. f
I have been using Allcock's Por
ous Pisterb for the last five years.
Some two t years ago, after having
been sick for upwards of six months
with malaria, I found myself with
an enlarged spleen, dyspepsia, and
constantly troubled with a headache,
and my kidneys did not act very
well either. Having spent most of
my money for medicine and medi
cal advice, I thought to save ex
pense I would use Allcock's Porous
Plasters, two on the small of my
back, one on the spleen or ague cake,
and one on the pit of the stomach,
just under the breastbone. I con
tinued using the Plasters about
thirty days, changing them every
week. At the end of that time I
was perfectly well, and have re
mained so ever since.

CRUCIBLE.
About twenty years ago I discovered a little
sore on my cheek, and the doctors pronounced
It cancer. I have tried a number o pnyslclan3,
but without receiving any permanent benefit.
Among the number were one or two specialists.
Tho medicine they applied wa3 like fire to tho
sore, causing Intcnso pain. I saw a statement
fn tho papers telling what S. S. S. had done for
others similarly afflicted. I procured some at
once. Before I had used the second bottle the
neighbors could notice that my cancer was
healing up. My general health had been bad
for two or three years I had a hacking cough
and spit blood continually. I had a severo
pain In my breast. After taking six bottles of
S. S. s. my cough left me and I grew stouter
than I had been for several years. Sly cancer
has healed over alt but a little spot about tho
sizo of a half dime, and It Is rapidly disappear
Ing. I would advise every one with cancer to
give S. S. S. a fair trial.
