Vp&ar-rwrw' -r W &iTtwito0emimim attfiM Wli gJaUtj ptorfatt. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY OCTOBEU 2a. 183; A polite communication on prohi bition appears on the outside page It is published through courtesy to its author and as an excellent illustration of the space a man can take up in a newspaper without saying anything. As a "reply" to anything wo have said it is pointless. But, of course to people who like that sort of thing that is about the sort of thing they would like. A coriiespoj.dent with the rather startling nom de plume of "Now Then" is hereby gently and amioably informed that intemperance in dis course is as reprehensible as intem perance in drink. If "Now Then5 does not need a prohibitory law, how pleasant for "Now Then." If "Now Then" desires to advocate prohibition J that is his, or hers, or its privilega There is no law in Oregon to prevent temporary aberration of mind on the part of zealous people, but there is a law in newspaper offices that a line of argument is worth a column of bosh, and that the receipt of manuscript in no way implies duty or obligation on the part of the editor to print it There are few things in this little life of ours worth getting angry about, and prohibition is not among them. We are desirous of getting through this little tilt without any personal quarrels, and must reserve some strength for the December election for, city officers, and if "Now Then" will keep its head cool, its feet warm and its bowels open, it may survive the present conflict West Virginia is a small, sparsely settled mountain state, but it has the biggest syndicate of liars that ever imposed upon distant newspapers. Never a day passes that a sensation of some kind is not sent out from it If all the crimes that are related as happening within its bounds actually took place, one half the population would be in jail, a quarter would be officers of the law, and the other quar ter would be fugitives from justice. If all the discoveries of mineral wealth were true, it would be produc ing more gold than California, more silver than Nevada, more coal and iron than Pennsylvania, more dia monds than South Africa, and more building-stone than the whole New England states. If all the bears and panthers and wildcats and snakes do business there that are reported, it would be safer to travel through the jungles of Africa than through a West Virginia forest. If all the strange people live there that are said to, the museums of the world would not want for freaks for'the next hundred years. The independent Republicans of Des Moines, Iowa, are supporting can didates for the legislature who favor a repeal of the prohibition amend ment. In explanation of their posi tion they have issued an address in which they say that prohibition as en forced in Des Moines is a failure, and that while the doors of many of the open saloons have been closed, the traffic is continued. The address also says that there are on West Fourth street in that city as many places "where liquor can bo bought as there were on the day before the law went into effect The statement is made that hundreds of men have been driven from Des Moines by prohibi tion, leaving a large number of dwell ing houses and store-rooms for rent, while real estate and rente have fallen from 20 per cent, to 33 percent, and taxes have increased 25 cent. The signers of the address refer to the prosperous condition of the city in July, 1884, before the prohibitory law went into effect, and declare that it haB since received a back-set and bus iness depression from prohibition, which cannot be attributed to poor crops and generally haixl times. From this indictment of prohibition it appears that the only thing the law has succeeded in prohibiting is the pros perity of Des Moines. The Tacnma Salmon Cannery. Tiie Balmon cannery at Old Town has abut down temporarily contin gent upon the ran of salmon. The oannery has had all sorts-of ill luck, and Mr. H errick, the manager, votes his experience here this season as one of the toughest, althongh he thinks with all that he has had to contend with he has canned more fish than any other cannery on the Sound ex cept Myers', at West Seattle. "In the first place," said Mr Her riok, "the men I brought from Asto ria hare failed me to a great extent So long as there was no work they were all right, but as soon as we got busy they made complaints and trou ble, and Iwas compelled to pick up men from here in town. I have but seven or eight of the gang of twenty seven that I brought along. The men I secured here have worked well and cheerfully, much better than I could heve expected. In the second place, they seLt herd from Astoria tarred nets which have been so stiff that-we had to keep them in salt to soften them up. The fun of fish has been very light, and up until this week we have been compelled to go down the Sound nearly to Seattle to make any catch worth counting. Last Sunday the run hero was fine, and I thought we were going to do big bus iness for another week or so. The fishing party seven men in charge of Martin Johns caught over 800 fish at a single haul last Sunday. They caught 1,700 during the afternoon of that day. The run was very fine the fish jampincr in all directions. To-day wo have been compelled to suspend for lack of material Onr capacity hero is 4,000 fish per day,,but of course we do not run tliat many. We have put up 2,500 cases for the season thus far. Four dozen cans are in a case, and about thirteen fisn." "How much is your pay for the fish?'1 "Ten cents per fish, and we get every thirteenth for the use of the nets." Seattle Post-Intelligencer. 22. An End to Bone Scraping. Edward Shepherd, of Uarrisbnrg, 111., says: "Having received so much bene fit from Electric Bitters, 1 feel it my duty to let suffering humanity know it. Have had a running sore on my leg for eight years; my doctors told me 1 would have to have the bone scraped or leg amputated. I used, instead, thre bot tles of Electric Bitters and seven boxes Bucklen's Arnica Salve, ami my leg is now sound and well." Electric Bitters are sold at fifty cents a bottle, and Bucklen's Arnica Salve at 25c per box by W. E. Dement & Co. "NEW TO-DAY. Office of Light-ITousk Inspector, Thirteenth District, Portland.
