Therefore, the importance of early and effective treatment cannot be overestimated. Ayer's Cherry Pec toral may always be relied upon for the speedy cure of a Cold or Cough. Last January I was attacked with a severe Cold, which, by neglect and fre quent exposures, became worse, finally settling on my lungs. A terrible cough soon followed, accompanied by pains in the chest, from which I suffered intense ly. After trying various remedies, with out obtaining relief, I commenced taking Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, and was Speedily Cured. I am satisfied that this remedy saved my life. Jno. Webster, Pawtucker, K. I. I contracted a severe cold, which suddenly developed into Pneumonia, presenting dangerous and obstinate symptoms. .My physician ordered the use of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. Ilia in structions were followed, and the result was a rapid and permanent cur II. E. Stiuipson, Rogers Prairie, Tex. Two years ago I suffered from a severe Cold, which settled on my Lungs. I con sulted various physicians, anil took-the medicines they prescribed, but received only temporary relief. A friend induced me to try Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. After taking two bottles of this medicine I was cured. Since then I have given the Pec toral to my children, and consider it The Best Remedy for Colds, Coughs, and all Throat and Lung diseases, ever used in my family. Robert Vandcrpool, Mendville, Pa. Some time ago I took a slight Cold, which, being neglected, grew worse, and settled on my Lungs. 1 had a hacking cough, and was very weak. Those who knew me best considered my life to be in great danger. I continued to suffer until I commenced using Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. Less than one bottle of this valuable medicine cured me, and I feel that I owe the preservation of my life to its curative powers. 3Irs. Ann Lockwood, Akron, .New York. Ayer's Cherry Pectoral is considered, here, the one great remedy for all diseases of the threat and lungs, and is more in demand than any other medicine of its class. J. F. Douglas, a boy oi fif teen years, to give up all hope of entering college, he indentured himself as an apprentice to a cabi net maker. For two years he worked at his trade with such in dustry as to become a first-rate cabinet maker. A feeble body and poor health forced him out of the shop. "When he discovered that he could not be a mechanic he determined to study law. He began a course of classical studies at an academy, and carried it on with the application which enabled him within four years to master nearly an entire collegiate course. During that time he also persist ently followed a course of law studies, under the instruction of an able lawyer. At twenty years of age he left the academy and law ofiice to seek his fortune in that vaguely de fined region known as "the west." He wandered through Cleveland, CincinnatijLouisville and St. Louis, seeking in vain for some "opening" through which he might pass to self-support. In his pilgrimage he arrived at Jacksonville, III., with thirty-seven cents in his pocket, and he himself unknown to any person in the town. He sought employment as a law clerk, offering his services for his board and lodging. No lawyer wanted him. He sold his school books to pay for bread and bed, and walked to "Winchester on a cold, December day. The morning after his arrival he left his lodgings to find employ ment. As he approached the pub lic square, he saw a crowd, and joined it. An administrator, about to sell by auction the stock in trade of a deceased merchant, was halted by the want of some man competent to keep a record of sales, and to make out the bills of purchasers. No person in the crowd, though several of them had been asked, was willing to undertake the duty. The administrator was embar rassed and the would-be buyers impatient. "P'raps this 'ere stranger," ssM a man, pointing to young Don iri-sK, "would do the job. He look as if he could read, write and cipher." The administrator insisted on him to serve and tendered him the liberal salary of two dollars a day. He consented; the auction lasted three days, and the temporary clerk had six dollars in his pocket, no mean sum for a man whose cash amounted to thirty-seven cents. But he had gained more than mon ey. The promptness with which he discharged his duty won for him the admiration of buyers, ad ministrator and'auctioneer. It was in the days when presi dent Jackson was fighting the United States bank, and party feelings were at fever heat. At intervals during the sale and in the evenings he joined in the po litical conversations which took place. The ability and the good nature which he showed in defend ing the president caused the old farmers to take him to their hearts. It was discovered that he was poor and wished to open a school. In a few days his new friends pro vided him with forty pupijs, each of whom was to pay three dollars per quarter. "While teaching school he de voted his evenings to studying the statutes of Illinois. On Satur day afternoons he acted as counsel before the justice's court. At the end of tliree months he abandoned his school and opened a law office. The money he had received for teaching, together with his fees for legal services, justified him in applying to .the supreme court for a license to prac tice law. In seven years from the date of his application he occupied a seat upon the supreme court bench, and in ten years he went back to the east as member of a congress. His subsequent career as a United States senator, a leader of the Democratic party, and a presiden tial candidate is well known. Doubtless it is spotted with errors and faults, for he was but a man; but it illustrates that honor and fame come to him who, instead of re pining at his situation, uses it as a fulcrum. ""We "Were a Boy Myself, Once." A rule for a school-boy's lunch eon is given by Burdette: "I would just take the market basket, if the family was going to use it that day, and I would cut up a loaf of bread, and trim off every bit of the crust to keep the boy from ly ing about it and telling me that he ate it and didn't fire it over the fence when he came home. I would cut the loaf of bread into slices and spread on butter until it began to fall off, then I would stack on the sugar as long as it would hold. Then I would load in a couple of links of sausage and some slabs of ham; a dainty cluster of hard-boiled eggs say half a dozen all the cake there was in the house, and fill up the rest of the space with pie, and then stuff two of his pockets with apples to eat during school hours, and fill the rest of his pockets with nuts, and give him five cents to buy "taffy." Then, if that bo- came home at 4 o'clock and said he didn't have enough luncheon and couldn't he have a piece, 1. would give him the keys to the cellar, cupboard, pan try, cake chest and fruit closet, and, yielding to dark despair, go out into the bam and hang myself. We were a boy-myself, once." Don't continue the practice of dripping the umbrella by the ferule. Turn it the other way, that is. handle down, when 3011 come iu out of the rain. The general w y is bad for the um brella, for it rots the material at the convnrging point of the frame .vires. Any umbrella man will -av that the proper way is to let the water run from the frame tips. A good many will object to this good advice because they don't want the pretty handle moistend. But the handle will dry, or if not quick enough it would be better to wipe it. Umbrellas should not be permitted to dry folded. Open them to dry them. No fictitious certificates, but sol id facts, testify the marvelous cures by Ayer's Sarsaparilla.
