wrapped in newspapers to exclude
the light.
"When troubled with the griddle
smoking, try greasing with fresh
lard as a preventive.
To keep an iron pot from rust
ing, each time before putting it
away rub it with grease that has
no salt in it
New tins should be set over the
fire with boiling water in them for
several hours before food is put
into them.
If soot is dropped on the carpet,
cover it thickly with salt, and it
may be swept up without injury
to the carpet.
In a basin of water, salt will, of
course, sink to the bottom; so
never soak salt fish with the skin
side down, as the salt will fall to
the skin and remain there.
Any cooking utensil that is
slightly broken or damaged ma'
fitly be reserved for the cooking of
onions, as a vessel in which they
have been cooked is scarcely fit
for anything else.
The best remedy for burns is
claimed to be essence of pepper
mit and whisky "mixed. "Wet a
soft cloth or raw cotton and apply.
It stops the pain instantly and
draws out the fire.
If white clothing say a dress, is
put away in a drawer or closet, it
will become yellow; but if placed
in a box lined with blue paper, or
wrapped with dark blue cloth, it
will come as white as it ever was,
no matter how long lies.

How a Crane Pished.
"It was about fifty years ago,"
said Dr. J. M. Kendall, of hJow
doinham, the other day. "I was a
youngster, and playing on the
bank of the Kennebec. 1 shall
never forget it in my life, how neat
I saw a crane get a pickerel din
ner. The were driving logs down
stream. I watched a crane acting
sort of funny, standing perched on
one of the logs near the shore. I
made up my mind to see what
'twas about, and hid in a clump of
bushes. The crane had a bug in
its bill and kept dropping it into
the current till it floated past him,
and then he grabbed it again and
repeated the performance. I
couldn't think what he was trying
to do. He looked to me as if he
was .going to sleep. The old fel
low kept the bug floating in front
of the log for half an hour, when
all of a sudden a big pickerel came
up to the surface and made a dive
for the bait. The pickerel was
down the crane's throat in less
than a second, and Mr. Crane
flapped his wings and flew away.
He took the bug in his bill, though.
They look sleepy enough, but they
know more than a good many peo
ple how to get their bread and
