Too High "a Price Por Longevity.
To make yourself miserable al
forty, in the wretched ambition to
add a few worthless years to youi
score after you have turned seventy
or eighty, is surely a poor-spirited
sort of game. To spdnd one's life
feeling his pulse, looking at his
tongue, and asking himself if he is
treatinc his constitution quite fairly,
is not life at all ; it is to live in a hos
pital, or at any rate an inhrmary.
There are some persons who are con
genitally cautious, congenitally cold,
congenitally calm. It is their nature
to take things quietly, never to be in
a hurry, never to excite themselves.
They are content to sit in an easy
chair for so many houra, read an
agreeable book for so many hours,
drive in a carriage when the weather
is favorable for so many hours, and to
regulate their existence by clock
work. They may live to one hundred,
they may live to one thousand, but,
in truth, they have not lived at all.
The man who really gets the best
Cbat can be got out of life is the man
who, with a fairly good constitution
to begin with, is ready to squander
it at any moment and on every occa
sion in a sufficient cause. He keeps
no account of profit and loss with his
vital energy ; he sees work to do, and
does it; he sees pleasure to be en
joyed, and he enjoys it. He is alive
all his life save when he sleeps ; and
he awakes from each Blumber look
ing the world cheerfully and coura
geously in the face, and ready and even
eager to be a combatant when-there
is a good honeBt fight, and a runner
when there is a good honorable race
afoot. He may not live to be one
hundred, but he may well live to be
seventy, seventy-five, oreveneighty.
Hemayhaveacareer,ifnotsoconBpic
uious, yet as active, as varied, and as
restless as that, say, of Mr. Gladstone,
and yet not be really old when time
registers him among the aged. "Bet
ter fifty years of Europe than a cycle
of Cathy," and better twenty years
of uncalculated activity than the
slow pulse and measured step oi the
circumspect snail that creeps surely
on to one hundred. We are not de
nouncing centenarians. Very likely
they deserve their length of years.
But it would be a misfortune if it
were ever thought an object of life to
live very long. The object of life is
to live, live generously, live bravely.

TRIED
CRUCIBLE.
About twenty years ago X discovered a llttlt
sore on my chcesr, and the doctors pronounced
it cancer. I have tried a number of phyalclioa,
but without receiving any permanent baoefit.
Among the number were one or two specialists.
The znedlclae they applied was Wee fire to the
sore, causing Intense pals. I saw a statement
In the papers telling what S. S. S. had dona for
others similarly afflicted. I procured soma at
once. Before I had used the second bottle tha
neighbors could notlco that my cancer wm
healing up. My General health had been bad
for two or three yean I had a hacking cough
and spit blood continually. I had a seTer"
pain In my breast. After taking six bottles of
S. S. S. my cough left me and I grew stouter
than. I had bees, for several years. Hy cancer
ha3 healed over alMrat a little spot about the
slio of a half dime, and It Is rapidly disappear,
lng. I would advise orery one with cancer to
give S. S. 3. a fair trial.
