ASTOKIA. OSEGON: 0
FRIDAY OCTOBER 21. 1887
UNNECESSARY ACTION.
The order for the removal of the
troops from Fort Canby and the aban
donment of that post, if made, must
certainly be under a misconception of
the situation- It is but a short time
since Fort Stevens "was abandoned.
Can it be that a sudden spasm of
economy has seized the "war depart
ment, and that one of the most impor
tant outposts of the nation is to be
abandoned because of the considera
tion of a few paltry dollars! We
hope not
Some time ago it was announced as
the polioy of Gen. PhiL Sheridan, the
general of the army, that the troops
be concentrated as much a3 pessible:
outlying posts, be abandoned, garri
sons consolidated and more depen
dence placed on ability to transport
troops where required. This was in
the line of progress, but the military
post of Fort Canby does not come un
der that rule. That fort is exceptional
and important. It commands the en
trance to the greatest river of the west:
it is now the only defence we have.
In marked contrast to the supine ac
tion of our government is that of the
British government at Yictoria, Es
quimau! and elsewhere on this north'
west coast It is bad enough to rest
content with the simple perpotua
tion of ono active military post at this
most important point on this coast,
but to abandon it appears like tran
scendent folly and is humiliating to
national pride and local prestige.
As a national measure The Astori-
an protests against this and voices
the sentiment of this entire section
in earnestly asking that such action
as that recently taken be rescinded,
and that the one solitary military
outpost on this northwest Pacific coast
be ordered kept up to its present
status.
Paragraphs from the press of Geor
gia, the empire state of the new south,
the home of the electric girl, show
that the wonders there are as numer
ous as ever and that the supply is in
no danger of being exhausted. Ono
Georgia paper tells the story of a
clock whioh Btopped the instant
its owner was arftested for murder,
and started again of its own accord
tho moment he was acquitted. An
other equally reputable, journal
gives a little 'natural history
anecdote. The cow of a Gaines
ville man refused to give mjlkj so the
owner consulted a cow-doctor, who,
deciding that she had "hollow tail,"
whatever that may be, split her tail
filled the opening with salt and tur
pentine, and bound it up, only to find
later that the poor animal was be
ing milked by a half -grown pig.
But it is in naming children that
Georgia challenges an admiring
world to produce her equal One
woman proudly points to a boy
named "Only begotten son in whom
I am well pleased," and a girl who
bears the euphonious title of "I will
arise and go to my father." As it
would require a great deal of time to
call these children by their full
names, the son answers to "Only,"
and the daughter to "I wilier." In
another family a particularly small
infant, weighing, in fact, only two
pounds, has been named, regardless
of consequences, "Martha Ann Mary
Magdalene Frances Cleveland
Broughton." Georgia appears to bo
richer in wonders than any other of
the southern states. -Perhaps, after
all, it is only because tho enterprising
Georgia journalists have more lively
imaginations than their neighbors.

There is considerable inquiry in
and out of the papers as to whom the
Kepublicans and Democrats will nom
inate for president next Bummer. In
the meantime there is no immediate
danger. The country is chuck full of
smart men, brainy people, who could
and can run anything successfully
that they take hold of. And the best
of it is that the people in it are so
prosperous and intelligent that it will
go right ahead no matter who the
politicians decide upon. Ben Frauk
lin used to say "Take care of the
oents and the dollars will take care of
themselves." So also it may be said
"Take care of city and county politics,
and national politics will take care of
itself."
"Faith without works is dead." So
said Paul, and he was right Your
faith is all right, but put your" name
down on one of those subsidy lists
for just one-fourth what you think
you would make by reason of a rail
road coming here. If every reader of
these few lines that come hoping you
are well, would do this, the subsidy
would run up to a quarter of a million
before noon. Bemember, the first
prime requisite is the pledging of the
$150,000. The next thing will be
something else. That done, Astoria
CRnfalL
Mr. Powderly strikes a key-note
when he says: "Let me elect the as
sessor, and I care not who elects the
president" If the people would pay
more attention to the selection of
honest and capable men for the local
offices they would find it very niuch to
their advantage. The truth is that
tho president has little or nothing to
do with matters directly affecting the
daily interests of American voters and
taxpayers. It is the men who have
charge of municipal and county affairs
that should.be looked after, as Mr.
Powderly puts it, "with eternal vig
ilance."
Three million women in the Unit
ed States work for money. Of these
600,000 are agricultural laborers,
mainly in the cotton fields of the
south; 640,000 are employed in manu
factories, while 530,000 in the laun
dries of the country insist that tho
"Chinese must go;" 280,000 are milli
ners, and 200,000 find employment as
dressmakers; 60,000 earn their bread
in the tailor shops and 690,000 are
saleswomen, teachers, telegraph oper
ators, type-writers, bookkeepers, type
setters and nurses. There are 2,500
female physicians.
Either Bayard or Garland will
have to leave the cabinet So Bayard
himself is reported to have said em
phatically. This is because A. K.
Delaney, tho new district attorney
for Alaska, in the suit aginst the En
glish seal fishing vessels, takes up a
lino of argument which controverts
almost ever', if not every, point
brought out and relied upon by Bay
ard in the fisheries dispute with Can.
ada and England.
A Texas editor came out in a scorch
ing leader and told the citizens of
Gatesville that there was altogether
too much promiscuous shooting at
dogs in the northern part of tho city
and that it must bo stopped. The
next week ho advocated tho side of
the shooters and explained his change
of base by stating that "a dog stole
our beefsteak, the first wo had had for
a fortnight" Meral: The dog was a
mugwump.
Mr. Powderly says tho Knights of
Labor should demand of the next
congress the establishment of govern
mental telegraph lines, to be run in
connection with the postal service.
But then wouldn't Jay Gould's West
ern Union buy up the government the
same as it did' the B. & O?
It was a race between the pipe line
and the street railway. The pipe line
had no wings of flame or anything
else, but it got there just the same.
