ASTOBIA. OREGON:
THURSDAY-....
-OCTOBER 20. 1887
ASTORIA'S ADVANTAGES.
Among Astoria's resources, her com
mercial position, her growing trade,
stand prominently her timber inter
ests. Capitalists, investors in land,
moneyed men in the Mississippi val
ley are looking to this northwest coast
for our timber, and the fir, cedar,
spruce and hemlock of Clatsop county
represent so much tangible wealth.
This is one of the things in which
the demand and supply are both il
limitable. The superior quality of
the timber makes a constant de
mand and the great extent of the area
so densely covered by, for many pur
poses, the finest timber in the world,
is practically inexhaustible.
All this vast timber district, of
which Astoria is the.headquarters and
center, yields timber of confessedly su
perior quality. The logs sawed in Port
land and vicinity mostly come from
here, and it stands to reason that the
nearer to the source of the raw ma
terial it can be manufactured the bet
ter for both the producer and con
sumer. Above the mouth of the Cowlitz,
lumber men say the fir is a red fir,
while on the lower Columbia is found
a yellow fir much sought after by
saw mill men for durability and
value for house finishings, etc. .
Ease of egress and ingress to the
ocean, absence of pile-consuming
teredos and sudden freshets sweeping
logs to sea as on the sound, a county
cut up by waterways, an enormous
area of merchantable timber, are
among the advantages Astoria posses
ses in this important regard.
Banking facilities, so important to
the lumber dealer, are particularly
favorable in Astoria. Eates of dis
count aro lower than on the Sound,
and in this as in other instances this
important financial consideration has
its due weight with those who aro
now looking this way for investment
attracted by the great timber wealth
of this section.
THE WORLD'S CATERER.
Who can deny that we Americans
of to-day live in the greatest country
on the globe and in tho most striking
period that history has yet developed?
The United States not only pursues a
steady course 'of feeding the rest of
world they steadily increase the
amount of that work. For the ten
months ending August 81, the ex
ports of beef and pork exceededby
82,000,000 the exports of the same
kind in the same period in 1886. Tho
total was 865,500,000, or a ratio of over
$96,000,000 a year. The wonder of
this is beyond parallel and it may well
claim a passing thought in these days
of reflection upon the greatness, fhe
growth and the illimitable future of
the republic. Here is the contribution
of the United States to the dinner
table of the world in Qnly
two articles of food consumption.
All other meats than beef and pork
go to swell .the enormous total, as do
breadstufis, fruits and vegetables,
canned goods, etc. We not only feed
ourselves more nourishingly and am
ply than any other people are fed, but
we send these hundreds of millions'
worth of food yearly to tho markets
of other nations. No other country
does suoh a work, nor in all history
has it been done. Who could have
possibly told such a tale, surpassing
any "Arabian Night" marvel, 100 years
ago?
Three new saw mills are building
and projected at Gray's harbor. That
country is fast livening up and strik
ingly illustrates how indirectly neigh
boring prosperity affects communities.
The boom in California has made a
demand for lumber, and a boom at
Gray's harhor is the result There is
a coming empire to the north of us,
the trade of which by right belongs to
Astoria. The people who live there
are our business friends and neigh
bors, and what helps them helps us.
Considerable lumber is towed to
Portland, and the handling of lumber
on barges costs about $1.25 a thou theu
sand: towage from lumber camps to
our Astoria mills is about 15 cents a
thousand. There are few places on
the coast where lumber can be man
ufactured cheaper than here. As to
the quality, Clatsop county lumber is
excelled by none.
9
PAoriic coukty's population is 2,312,
an increase of 364 in two years : the pop
ulation of Wahkiakum county is 1,523,
an increase of 158 in two years: Che
lialis county's population is 3,242, an
increase of 840 in two years: the pop
ulation of the territory is 144,009, an
increase of 18,155 since 1885.
Anxtheto' that helps the Astoria
fire department helps the city. The
success of the pipe-line is an aid to
the department and an added security
to the city.
Green vs. Dry Timber.
All the lumber in the Paget sound
country is run through the surfacer
as soon as it comes from the saw.
The big fir logs, so I am told, are
torn apart rather than sawed and tne
fiber is so tough and large that the
lumber does not present an attractive
appearance until it is dressed. An
other thing which strikes the average
handler of white pine peculiarly is
that it doe3 not dry out much lighter
than it is when it comes from the
stump. Under these circumstances
green lumber is Bold about as readily
as dry, especially as the lumber is
wonderfully free from shrinkage.
This is particularly true of the cedar.

Ad Astonished Subscriber.
The infuriated subscriber had just
rushed into the offioe, and a pale,
spirituelle reporter" faced him calmly
and asked him what he wanted.
"I want to know who wrote this
scurrilous article about me."
"I did."
"You did ?'' Sure it wasn't an error
of the compositor?"
"Certainly."
"Isn't the proofreader to blame?"
"Not in the least"
"Young man, let me embrace you.
I've been whipping editors all my li fo
and you're the first one I ever met who
did not blame the proof reader or
compositor." Chicago Trib une.
