ASTORIA. OREGON:
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 19. 1B87
Music sharps and flats say tliat
Miss Clara Louise Kellogg lias lost
her voice from eating too much hot
bread for breakfast She must have
had an unusually big breakfast of hot
broad on the occasion of her visit to
Astoria.
The railroads of Kansas have made
a tariff discriminating in favor of the
people of the state by engaging to
transport Grain and other food pro
ducts from places where there is an
abundance to localities where there is
a scarcity at reduced rates.
The secretary of the interior is in
receipt of the annual report of Gov.
Moonlight of Wyoming territory.
The report throws considerable moon
light on the growth of the territory,
its agricultural greatness, etc. Its
population is given as 85,000.
Thebe are now in New England
191,000 people who ;can neither read
nor write, in the state of Pennsylva
nia, 322,000, and in the state of New
York 241,000, while in the United
States there aro nearly six millions
who can neither read nor write.
One-third of the state of Oregon
has never been surveyed. This makes
the AUa think that it will be well in
the next national platforms to couple
with that resolution about reserving
the public domain for the honest set
tier, another promising to survey it
for the honest settler, so lie can find
his home.
- m 'M
Astoria is at present the recipient
of a great many complimentary refer
ences relative to her enterprise in
raising a cash subsidy for the pro
posed railroad. All these pleasant
and kindly little notices of the press
are appreciated. It is for our citizens
to go ahead with the worksand make
the amount named an assured fact.
The Milwaukee Wisconsin thinks
that General Rea, the new commander-in-chief
of the Grand Army of the
Republic, uttered a sentence which
will live long after this generation
shall have passed away, when he
spoke the other day of the old sel:
diers as "survivors of the men who
crowded four centuries of progress
into four years of war."
The Columbia Sentinel of Georgia
publishes this death netice: "On Fri
day last, jrist after the sun had kissed
thiB world good night and passed into
its bed of crimson and gold, the spirit
of A. G. Sturgis vacated its habitation
of clay and wended its way to The
Father who gave it, and to-day is
walking the glory-lit hills of immor
tality in the New Jerusalem, where
there is no night"
The Milwaukee Sentinel asserts
that the trust fever has broken out in
the lumber business, and predicts the
formation of a lumber trust as the re
sult of the efforts of Frederick "Weyer
hauser, "the controlling spirit of lum
ber corporations in "Wisconsin, Min
nesota, Iowa and Missouri, represent
ing an aggregate capital of $'70,000,000
and producing over a billion feet of
lumber per year."
The French war minister .has given
orders that dogs shall be tried in con
nection with advance-po3t duty and
taught to bark at the approach of an
enemy or stranger. Dogs aro also to
be used as scouts; and if they prove
useful they aro to be attached to all
the line regiments and stationed reg
ularly with the double sentries.
"Letting loose the dogs of war" thus
promises to have a literal as well as a
metaphorical meaning. -

The judiciary committee of the New
Hampshire house of representatives
resumed a few days ago its hearing of
evidence in 'connection with the al
leged attempted corruption of legisla
tors by railroad men. From the tes
timony introduced it would seem that
the acme of diplomatic policy had
been reached by the would-be corrup
tionists in their manner of suggesting
the "boodle" idea. For instance, Jas.
"W. Cathe, representative Irom Man
chester, testified that Alfred Quimby
remarked to him that he did "not
want to buy anybody; but that when
he (witness) voted for the railroad bill
in question, he would derive 1,000
from some unknown source." The
gentleness of this method is onjy
equaled in history by that of the

a wager of 810.000 or so with a certain
alderman that the latter would not
vote in favor of the Broadway street
railroad franchise, but paid the bet
without a murmur when he lost it.
It is baid that Yillard's plan in re
gard to the Oregon Transcontinental
is to substantially place a collateral
trust o per cent, loan of twenty mill
ion dollars with his German friends.
This, he thinks, he can do at about
ninety-five. The trouble would be in
finding the n'ecessary collateral. The
Northern Pacific has some express
stocks. Tacoma land stocks and sun
dry securities could be used, but the
branch line bonds would strengthen
the collateral more than anything
else. It is thought that Northern
Pacific will be about five million dol
lars behind on tho completion of the
Cascade division. Yillard's proposed
loan would take care of this amount
and a large and needed outlay for
equipment
