) tells the following too-true tale of
life in the Waldo hills.
The danger of buying a boy an
amateur printing press is well
illustrated in the story of a Scan
tj'grease lad, who a short time ago
overheard his mother and sister
talking bout the youmg lady's
approaching marriage and who
they should invite. The mother
insisted that the McFadden tribe
should not be invited, while the
daughter was positive that she did
not want old Mr. Wilkinson.
So it was settled that all friends
of the family should receive an in
vitation (of course they would all
bring flowers, the mother said)
with the exception of the McFad
den tribe and Mr. Wilkinson.
The boy, who was the happy
possessor of an amateur printing
press and imagined he had the
head of a Ben Franklin, thought
this was the time to get in his
work.
He listened to the conversation
of his mother and sister with more
than ordinary attention. Then he
went down cellar to his mammoth
printing establishment and was
not seen about the house for the
remainder of the day. The next
morning the neighbors were sur
prised to see tho goats licking off
tho paste on the following "poster,"
which adorned every bill board
and fence for blocks around, not
even sparing the barn doors of
Prof. McGraw and the Cox fam
ily: "Miss Susan Brown announces
that she will marry Mr. James
Travers at church, next Thursday,
at 7:30 sharp. All tho friends of
the family with the exception of
the McFadden tribe & Old Wil
kinson are invited. Come early
and bring lots of flowers."
The wedding was postponed,
the boy sent offto Salem to school,
and the printing press destroyed.
Salmon are more plentiful at
Yaquina ba and "traps and boats
are doing well, some boats taking
as high as 125 a night and the
traps two or three times as many.
The fish are Chinooks, silver sides
and steel heads, principally the
two latter varieties. A perch wa
caught in a trap there the oil:- r
day which measured 2G inclioa in
length, 18 inches across and 2i
inches in thickness. It was twice
as heavy as any perch ever seen
there before and -is supposed to
have been the great grandfather of
the tribe.

J At Salem, on the 18th, Judge
Strahan delivered an opinion in
the case of W..W. Sweeney, re
spondent, vs. L. J. McLeod et al.,
appellants. Tins is an action m
which Sweeney, the plaintiff and
respondent, sought in the lower
court to recover the value of his
services while engaged as lobbyist
for the defendants, in endeavoring
to prevent unfavorable legislation
by the legislature upon the use of
fish wheels in the capture ol salm-,
on. Plaintiff was awarded 281.
Defendant appealed. Judge Stra
han's opinion is exhaustive and
able. It reviews the facts con
cerning the alleged contract be
tween the parties and the law
points involved. He concludes
as follows. "Such contracts
as the one sued on are
always closely and rigidly
scrutinized by the courts when
sought to be enforced. Nothing
wrong may have been intended in
this particular case, nor was it .nec
essary. If the terms of the con
tract required any services to be
rendered or designed to render
any services either to cause or
prevent any legislative action,
otherwise than b' publicly pre
senting the subject before the
legislature or some of its commit
tees, such contract cannot be en
forced in this state. It follows
from the views expressed (hat the
judgment of the court below must
be reversed and & n?w trial award
ed."
