The editor and proprietor of the Cowlitz Advocate, at Kalama, has bought the Northern Pacific railroad building. It has 26 .rooms, and cost 86,000 when Kalama was a rival to Astoria. , Any person wishing to join the grammar class at the Young Men's Christian association is invited to at tend the preliminary meeting this evening in the Y. Anderson, chief engineer of the Northern Pacific, has been re quested to hand in his resignation. No one seems to know the cause, but one gentleman attributes it to econo my, the Northern Pacific having practically finished the Cascade branoh with the exception of the tun nel, and there is, therefore, but little need for an engineer. Last Saturday a painful accident befell the nine-year-old daughter of L. B. Chase, residing at Knappa. While playing around a pile of lum ber one of the pieces loosened and fell, striking the little girl on the jaw, breaking it, and felling her to the earth. It then rolled on her and broke her right thigh. The little sufferer was brought to the hospitat where Dr. J. A. Fulton supplied the needed medical assistance. On the Columbia yesterday went 502 cases salmon, 3,737 bdls. shooks, 7,000 cases empty cans, 50 sacks oys ters, and 70 boxes cranberries, from Ilwaoo. Cranberry shipments from Astoria are something new. The salmon cans go to San Francisco, and 'from there to different coast canner ies. The shooks will be distributed the same way. Croueh exhibits a new discovery, which is one of great promise regard ing the possibilities of electricity. By immersing zinc in salt water, in connection with lead partially im mersed, positive and negative elec trical force can be generated by the action of the sad sea waves, and with an induction machine electric light may thus be manufactured. Thus by the rise and fall of the. tide Clat sop beach could, and sometime in the far off future probably will, be lighted by electricity generated by the rise and fall of the tide. PERSONAL MENTION. Woodard and Mr. Petti bone (who is managing the building of a railroad from Napa, Gal., north ward through to Lake county) had a consultation at Oakland, when it was decided that upon Woodard'a arrival in jxew iom ne wouia lay tne Astoria matter before the company's manager there, and see what steps could be taKen ior worn tnis winter, it is pos sible that either of these two gentle men will be here before long. The first, the foremost, the neces sary thing for us to do here is to com plete the subsidy. Till that is done nothing can be promised or decided. The subsidy first assured" and then Astoria will have done her part The next move then comes from the party of the second part. Private Lectures. ' That is the name of a little sled that will lie all unused this winter among the bric-a-brac in one home. It is a pretty, cheerful thing, tied with long, bright ribbons of a glad color, and covered with an array of little toys, and a boy's broken-bladed knife. The name of death is never spoken in connection with it. Some times a man stands looking at it, with a troubled face, as if wondering whether indeed this were not death, and that life, and why we have so strangely reversed the terms. And when it is night, and no one sees her, a woman kneels there and kisses all that the little hands have touched, and goes through a pantomime of deathless grief. But mostly they are cheerful as those who have ireasure in heaven, and Bay. gently, "he has gone away," or "he is asleep." "Blessed sleep, From which none ever wako to weep." Renews Ilcr Youth, Mrs. Phoebe Cheslcy, Peterson, Clay Co., Iowa, tells the following story, the truth of which is vouched for by the residents of the town : "I am 73 years old, nave been troubled witti Ktuuoy complaint and lameness for many years: could not dress myself without help.
