a J fw Sails gfoOTU. ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY .OCTOBER 16. 1BS7 Si. John, the apostle of prohibition, says: "We are fighting the Kepubli can party." If any Republican wants to cut the throat of his own party as far as lies in his power, let him vote the prohibition ticket The first attempt at prohibition we read of, was in the Garden of Eden. We all know the result After the flood, Noah, the man whom God chose with his four sons to keep the human race from extinction went into the wine business. The Albany Democrat says: "A coterie of Blaine leaders have deter mined to take vengeance on the friends of prohibition in Oregon for the defeat of Blaine in 1884, by giving prohibition a big black eye." There's a heap of human nature in some folks. Perhaps the most pronounced declaration made by a convention of the administration party in regard to the reduction of taxation is that made recently by the convention in the "pivotal" state of New York. The tariff plank in the platform demands that federal taxation be straightway reduced by a sum not less than $100,000,000 a year. It declares that the taxes to be first re duced or altogether removed should be those on imported raw materials which it declares "now assist and promote foreign competition with ourselves in our own markets and prevent the sale of our surplus pro ducts in foreign markets." Ro3E Elizabeth Cleveland has begun her new duties as teacher of American history in a young ladies' boarding school in New York. Miss Cleveland is a sister of the president of the United States, the greatest na tion on earth. If this is not a demo cratic republican country pure and simple in which we live, then there never was and never will be one. Im agine the sister of Queen Elizabeth or of Emperor "William presiding over a class. All honor to the little New York schoolmarm, for she teaches a lesson in democratic republican inde pendence that her sisters and brothers in high and low station, in this and oth er countries would do well to learn. At the end of the month when she gets her small, "but interesting and impor tant envelope, she will feel prouder and better than a queen, even if it will buy nothing more than a new bonnet and pay for her board. The question of prohibition is by its adherents compared with and likened to the abolition of slavery. After the war the extremists shouted from every quarter, "We have abol ished slavery and now we will abolish liquor also." The result of abolition was so complete that they dreamed of nothing less in the case of prohibition. The passage of a prohibitory law was all that was deemed necessary; but this is a very narrow and unjust view of the subject Prohibition and abo lition are two distinct and opposite questions. Abolition gave individual liberty; prohibition takes away indi vidual liberty. Abolition was not a new theory and was always successful with the progress of civilization. We have no right to enslave our inferiors? nature's law invariably regulating the differences between inferiors and su periors. Prohibition is not a new theory and has alwaj's proven unsuc cessful with civilized nations. We have no right to regulate by statute our neighbor's taste and appetite. We have a right to regulate our own, and any man and every man can be a prohibition law to himself, if ho wants to be: if he doesn't, he cannot, unless his personal liberty is taken away from him, and if his personal liberty is taken away, what becomes of the boasted parallel between abolition and prohibition? In place of the two being identical they are opposite. One gave liberty, the other would take it away. A COWBOY FIREMAN. A Fire Company's Experience With a Son of the Plains. Tm a reformed cowboy," he said, "and I want a job." "Were you ever connected with the fire department?" asked the chief, to whom application had been made. 'No, but I reckon a fire engine doesn't run any faster'n a Texas steer or a Colorado cyclone. Thebnffaloes are gone, and there's no more men out on the ranches worth a loaded shell, so I'm going to settle down to the effete customs of svhite men in the states. I've got to take it grad ual, though, for a man who's lived where I have can't gallop straight in to civilized society. I have heard tell of the lively times the fire boys have, and I think I can be tamo enough to be one of you." The chief rather liked the appear ance of this American Arab, especial ly as he was a master at horse-train ing, and accordingly the cowboy was installed as a pipeman on trial. That night he observed that the other firemen, when retiring, placed their clothes by the bedside, ready to be slipped on at a second's warning. The cowboy, gathering the idea that time is everything at a fire, deter mined to risk no delays. Accordingly he slept in his clothes, having previ ously hung his lasso and pistols on the harness of the engine horse. In the dead of night an alarm came in. Before the firemen had slipped into their boots the cowboy had sprang from his bed, mounted the horse to which he had fixed his "working tools," and was dashing down the street at a break-neck speed in the direction of a column of smoke and flame that could be seen rising on the horizon. "Hold on! Comeback!" shouted the other firemen. But the son of the plains heard them not. He was on his way to the fire, and was indif ferent as to whether the other boys got there or not He evidently thought the engine's motive power was steam, for he left the crew with only one horse. The cowboy fireman was personally ambitious to excel all his new asso ciates, but at the same time he was desirous that his company should get first water on tho flames. Only a thin lino of spectators was around the burning tenement when ho ar rived on the scene. "Look out for old Texas," he howled, swirling about throngh tho people and literally surrounding the building, so fiercely did be drive his horse to and fro. In his hand was the coiled lasso, and from his belt the brace of pistols reflected the light from the flashes of flame. Every one shrank from him as from a baud of Zulus. Presently a hose company swung around ready for action. A nozzle was pointed toward the flames and soon a stream of water would have poured on tho fire. The cowboy's eyes took in the situation. It was an opposition company. His lasso rose in the air and its tightening noose in falling encircled the nozzle of the hose. "Time enoueh for you fellows to squirt after our company gets here," tho cowboy said, whipping up his horse and hauling tho hose and clinging pipemen after him. Down the street he draeeed the hose deter mined to carry it beyond reach. Horse, hose and Tider soon disap peared from view of the thunder struck people. The flames rolled on. The cowboy, Oh, where was he? Nino hours later the police found him. But they didn't take him. On his brow was the nush ot great achievements; in his hand the looped lariat In a yard which he had seized in tho name of the government and "The Boss Fire Company' were a hundred cattle or more! The cowboy, in hauling away the enemy's hose from the fire, had en countered droves of animals which law-breaking citizens permit to roam tne streets. Tne ruling passion oi a cowboy drove out all other thoughts. The tenement burnt to the ground, but there has not been such a job of corralling since the cow ordinance was passed. CJiicago Tribune.
