A Sanguinary Speech.
George Francis Train delivered
a lecture in the Princess theater,
last Sunday afternoon, to a small
audience. A Dart o the lecture,"
if literally reported, would read
like a nightmare. "Being born
on a mountain top," said Air.
Train, "I saw you couldn't hang
seven men in Chicago for
committing no crime. I am going
to move here and settle down.
All in favor of my living here, say
'aye.' (Ayes vociferously grant
ed). You hang those seven men
if 'ou dare, and I will head 20,
000,000 workingmen to cut the
throats of everybody in unicago.
All in favor of cutting the throats
of everybody in Chicago say aye.'
(Ayes given with a roar of laugh
ter). How can you convict men
of hpinor nnrpssnries to a crime for
which there is no principal?" he
suddenly shouted. Mu urtnermore,
how are these men accessories,
and why should they hang? By
similar reasoning Jeff Davis and
Robert E. Lee ought to have hung
for firing on Fort Sumter, Dennis
Kearney and the rest of the sand
lotters and coast editors ought to
hang for the Rock Springs .Chi
nese massacre which they foment
ed, and Mayor Harrison and the
chiefs of police who permitted the
anarchist leaders to incite the
Haymarket massacre during tho
years of inflammatory speeches
should hang." .
A vote was then taken on a
proposition to hang Jay Gould to
a lamp post, and unanimously car
ried. V ftv-v Trifle with any Throat

The state and government agents
who have been examining lands in
eastern and southern Oregon have
finished their survey and are now
at The Dalles, preparing their re
port. The two agents who have
been operating in southern Ore
gon have not yet entirely finished
their examination, but they will
be through in a few weeks. No
doubt such disposition of these
swamp lands as the government
and state agents recommend will
be agreed upon. Those which
they decided to be swamp will be
turned over to tho state and pat
ents granted therefor, while the
remainder the government will re
serve for itself.

Montana's treasury has been
bankrupted by the bounty on
prairie dogs and ground squirrels.
Last winter the legislature author
ized a reward of ten cents for
prairie dogs and five cents for
squirrels, and to date the territory
has paid for G98,971 ground squir
rels and 153,709 prairie dog3, or a
total of over 50.000. These nav-
ments exhausted the money in the.
treasury, and were running the
territory in debt. A special ses
sion of the legislature was held
last week and the law repealed.
