CO Mi gaiUj Hsioran. ASTOKIA, OREGON: FRIDAY ..OCTOBER 7. 1687 The News says that the project to pay a stranger the sum of $250,000 lo build a hotel in Portland is collapsed. The Milwaukie & St Paul road is to run "Union Pacific trains direct to Chi cago -without change, virtually ce menting the alliance between the two roads. The New York Herald is now printed and published simultaneously on two continents. It appears every morning in Paris and is sold there for 2 cents, its New York price. The statement is made in San Francisco that the Chicago & North western line is to be constructed on from Fort Caspar, "Wyoming territory, to Ogden, At present the line has no western outlet, and a present ter minus at Ogden would be ot value. A permanent ocean terminus at Asto ria would be ol greater value. Last Wednesday Gov. Pennoyer re ceived a letter from secretary Endi- cott, stating that a requisition ot the state for arms and equipments to the value of $2,700 had been allowed. This is Oregon's quota established by law. The special requisition for arms sufficient to equip the military of the state was not granted. The arms al lowed are 163 in number. Since Proctor Knott spoke ot Du luth as "the zenith city of the unsalted 86as," there has been a decline in tall talk. Senator Ingalls, however, is re viving the soaring style, and says that the next constitutional centenary will find us extended "from the waters of the frozen zone to the warm waves of the tropic sea." The oratory of the Nebraska senator differs from Asto ria's proposed railroad, inasmuch as the orator is apparently poorly pro vided with terminal facilities. Yesterday's San Francisco Call says: The division of territory be tween the Union Pacific and Northern Pacific, which was a part of the er rand of Thomas J. Potter to New York recently, will insure to the O. P. & N. Co. a clear field in eastern Ore gon, free from rivalry from the North ern Pacific, and the Union Pacific an opportunity to develop its Oregon Short Line at leisure. Interesting de velopments, in the railroad field are promised for the near future. A centubt ago there were only 40, 000 Catholics in this country, with 25 priests and no bishops. Now the church has an American -cardinal, 12 archbishops, 61 bishops, 7,658 priests and a membership of 8,000,000. . The American cardinal, the most eminent Mr. Gibbons, will be in Portland to night? He is a brother of Gen. John Gibbon, commander, of the depart ment of the Columbia. -The general dropped the "s" some .time ago and spells his name "Gibbon." Ml - It is reported that another im mensely powerful syndicate is in progress of formation, and this time for operations in Canada. The names mentioned in this connection are sen ator Payne, senators Burke and Kit chie, of Ohio, Erastus Wyman and A P. Boardman of Now York, and James McLaren of Ottawa. The ob ject of the combination is to secure the control of all the known valuable iron deposits in Canada, now said to be the richest iron country in the world. The capital is to be $10,000, 000, more than two-thirds of which is already pledged. The syndicate, it is said, will own 100 properties in dif ferent parts of Canada. Newspaper reporters do some fun- ny things sometimes to ge't the true business and re'ach satisfactory con ' elusions. There was an anarchist meeting in New York the other night and a World 'reporter wanted to report the meeting, so two nights be fore he joined the gang and was sworn in as a member of the order over a big bucket of beer. As a member in good standing he attended the meeting' and disappearing at an early stage of the proceedings behind some old scenery he got it all down in shorthand, and the next morning the World gave the whole business away, signs, pass words, grips, etc., and now the New York anarchists have had to fix up a new system, and are looking for their long lost brother, 'that fly New York reporter. To show the remarkable vigilance of the German government in its ex ' actions of military service from its subjects, it is said that Germany never loses sight of any of them; that the subject in all his wanderings is fctill kept on the list with his last place of res idence. "When war comes he is imme diately summoned home, and should he fail to obey, is branded as a deserter and punished as soon as hands can be laid upon him. Germany, as "well as the other powers, claims and exercises the right to take possession, without a moment's notice, of the entire railway system within its territory, and con duct it under military surveillance ex clusively. The government has now a record of every car belonging to every railroad within its bor ders. These cars are all num bered in plain letters. Every regiment in the service is assigned to a certain number of cars, specifically designated, and, in the event of a rap id movement, the commanding officer of a regiment knows without any in quiry into what cars he is to pack his men. This is the perfection of prepa ration. Railroads in Germany do not run over the vast stretches of terri tory they do in the United States, and, consequently, rolling stock is not, as with us, scattered hundreds of miles apart There is probably not a a railroad in all Germany whose en tire equipment could not be concen trated in one day. Heart Disease!! Bead the hospital reports, read the mortuary reports, read the medical publications, read the daily newspa pers, and learn how wide-spread is heart disease, how difficult of detec tion it is to most people, how many and how sudden are the deaths it causes. Then read Dr. Flint's treat ise on Heart Disease, and leem what it is, what causes it, what diseases it gives rise to, what its symptoms are, and how it may bo attacked. It you find that you have heart disease, ask your druggist for a bottle of Dr. Flint's HeabtBemedy. The treatise may be had on application to J. J. MACK & CO., Nos. 9 and 11 Front street, S. F. Some Coming Styles. It is yet too early to take much in terest in the new fashions of makiug up the common fabrics. Skirts are to be longer, barely clearing the ground; there are indications of a re vival of narrow pleatings. Draperies on some of the new models are much shorter, while upon others they are very long, reaching quite to the bot tom of the lower Bkirt. Sleeves are in a transitory state, as many ladies will not adopt the full sleeve, and oth ers quite prefer it; there is every indi cation that both styles will be in fa vor, as the American woman will have what is most becoming to her, and the majority of women like plain sleeves for that reason. Nearly all ladies with shapely arms prefer the close sleeve. The full sleeve i3 more desirable for ladies who are less fa vored by nature in that particular. TItc Verdict Unanimous. W. D. Suit, Drugeist Bippus. Ind., testifies: "1 can recommend Electric Bitters as the very best remedy. Every bottle sold has given relief in every case. One man took six bottles, and was cured of Rheumatism of 10 years' standing." Abraham Hare, druggist, Bellville, Ohio, affirms: "The best selling medi cine I have ever handled in my 20 years' experience, is Electric Bitters." Thou sands of others have added their testi mony, so that the verdict is unanimous that Electric Bitters do cure diseases of the Liver, Kidnevs orcBlood. Only a half dollar a bottle at W. E.
