Miles for .Gray's harbor is postponed until Fri day, Oct. 7th, owing to delays on her last trip to Shoalwater bay. The Astoria Building and Loan association had a business meeting last evening and loaned $2,200 at 48 months' interest in advance. A man whoso name was not learned is at the hospital suffering with two broken ribs, the result of a fall at St. Helens last Tuesday, while loading wood on the Telephone. A description of an infant's feeding bottle says; "When the bab is done drinking it mu3t be unscrewed and left in a cool place, say under a tap." If they are going to subject infants to such treatment, few of us will care to be "born again." Astoria mills are so busy loading lumber for California and supplying the local demand that there is no lumber being shipped east from As toria at present The California boom has made a boom iu the lum ber business and logs are logs this fall. There are thirteen boats at Gray's harbor and Shoalwater bay. Eight of them were recently inspected and five of them were inspected in June. There are two bar tugs, the Traveler, and Hunter. Another tug is be ing built here, and will soon bo ready for service. Last evening one of the uppertown passenger coach teams standing at the White House corner, headed east, whirled around and started up Che namus street at a lively pace, bring ing up at the postoffice with the out fit in a demoralized condition, bnt, fortunately, with very little damage. A good impression of any article of metal having a flat, ornamental sur face, may be taken by wetting some note paper with the tongue and smok ing it over a gas flame. The article is then pressed upen the smoked part, when, if the operation be care fully conducted, a clear impression is the result. . Local items in a newspaper are picked up just about as a chicken picks up its breakfast, a grain here and a grain there. If you have an item let the news gatherer have it. Every little grain of news helps to make the paper more readable Items are always preferred to advice. There's enough advice lying around now to run three towns like this. The ladies of the Baptist church will have a literary and social enter tainment and supper at the Y. LI. C. A. rooms this evening, to all of which a general invitation is extended. There will be a nominal charge of ten cents admission, and all who attend may count on a pleasant evening. The literary part of the entertainment will be followed by a fine supper. An eastern man has invented a new kind of burglar-proof safe. It is of boiler iron and goe3 into a larger one, also of boiler iron. The outer one is connected with a pipe that supplies it with live steam. When the enter prising burglar gets through the out er one he runs a chance of being sur prised and also scalded. Our steamed friend gets a red-hot recep tion. In a uamDhlet issued renentlv hv the United States hydrographic office lieutenant Underwood says that min eral oilB are not so effective for use at sea as vegetable or animal. A comparatively small amount of the right kind of oil, say two quarts per hour, properly used, is sufficient, he asserts, to prevent much damage both to vessels and small boats in heavy seas. A swindle was worked on a farmer near Walla "Walla lately. He wished to sell his farm. A man made his ap pearance, agreed to buy and paid $100 as forfeit He went away. In a few days a second man came along bid a bigger price. No. 1 came again. Gibson paid him 81,100 to release the bargain, and now he is looking for the purohaser who was to pay the biggest price. If you have any little item of news that you or your friends or the pub lic would like to see, hand it in. Lots of things happen in little cities and big cities that folks would like to hear, but the dickens of it is to find them out, and the days are only twenty-four hours long. You can help in this regard and in the great hereafter you will get a seat three rows further down toward the front therefor. - Geo. W. Freeman has a room at the custom house where he is drafting a detailed map of a recent careful sur vey made by him of Tillamook bay and the channel to Hoquarlon or Lin coln or Tillamook. It i3 the best sur- vey ever made of that section; the map when completed will be sent to the secretary of war, and final exami nation of it will determine the matter of improving Dry Slocking bar and other points that badly need govern ment attention. Astoria is getting lots of praise and a big advertisement in its promptness in subscribing to the subsidy- Every paper, has something to say about it. Astoria deserves all the praise it is getting. It is a big undertaking to raise a subsidy of 8150,000, cash, and few places of the size of Astoria would tackle it In the meantime, let us get iu and finish the business; less than S20.000 more is required, and time passes. A correspondent of the Whatcom Reveille gets off a dozen hits upon non-progressives. Speaking of rail road building, he says: "It would cause immigration to come iu and prosperity would naturally follow, and I do not think we are strong enough to stand it. Building of rail roads would be followed by other in dustries on the bay that would be a death-blow to the clam industry, which must be protected at all haz ards." A story comes from Cleveland, Ohio, of a very pretty young lady having been suddenly transformed into an old woman. She was with her betrothed visiting an electric light establishment A broken wire of her bustle had worked through her dress unperceived, and while pas3ing along, the wire came in contact with one of the powerful electric machines. Her hand resting onauiroubarat the timb completed the circuit, and she received a shock from the effects of which she has grown within a week to be an old-looking woman with a harsh, cracked voice and peovish and irritable disposition. The time to speak is when one has something to say, and the time to ad vertise is when one has something use ful to sell. Silence of the thoughtless is golden, but as a tradesman is never anything but a willing seller, silence on his part means stagnation. There fore, advice that relates to the indu bitable value of advertising would seem superfluous. But it is net: there are many merchants and manu facturers who do not realize the mag nitude of the circulation an advertise ment receives through a reputable newspaper; nor do they appreciate tho extent to which advertisements are read by newspaper patrons. .i i m i Excitement in Texas, Great excitement has been caused in the vicinity of Paris. A prominent business mau of this city has received inquiries this week from eastern lumber firms who wunt to invest 8200,000 in timber lands in this county. To them and such as them who waut to invest ami who will give employment to men this county looks for increase of wealth and population. Take, for instance. Mayor Trullingej. He 'gives employ ment to a hundred men, and they create a demaud for supplies, and help, just as far as a hundred men's needs go, to make a market for every thing that Clatsop county raises iu the way of agricultural products, etc. Men who want to work can always get work here, but they cannot pick their werk: they must be able aud willing to take the first honest work that offers till they find something that suits them better, and bring I inougb with them to take them back again if they don't like the country. Give Thcru n Chance! That is to say, your lungs. Also all your breathing machine'. Very won derful machinery it is. Not ouly the larger air-passages, but the thousands of little tubes and cavities leading from them. "When these are clogged and choked with matter which ought not to be there, your lungs cannot half do their work. And what they do they can not do well. Call it cold, cough, croup, pneumo nia, catarrh, consumption or any of tho family of throat and nose and head and lung obstructions, all are bad. All ought to be got rid of. There is just one snre way to get rid of them. That is to take Boschee's German Syrup, which any druggist will sell you at 75 cents a bottle.
