i?.JKvW. JB-i- "WlW" ? .. T'" ' Cz) ltc gmtt IMforan, ASTORIA. OREGON: THURSDAY- OCTOBER 6. 18S7 ASTORIA'S COMMERCE. The importance o Astoria's com merce is veil illustrated by the recent statement o n prominent sliipmaster tliatbut for the freight at Astoria the freielit business to Alaska would not bo worth considering. Astoria being the base of supplies for all the outside salmon business from Port Orford to Bearing's sea, keeps in business a fleet of vessels and makes remunerative employment for hundreds of men. Not the least among the items of Astoria's shipping business is the . re ceipt and trans-shipment of freight Goods sold and manufactured else where are sent to their destination via Astoria and can rightly be reckoned as a part of our commerce. The steady growth of outlying com munities keeps in active business op- flrations a number of smaller river vessels admirably adapted for traffic on the waters of Clatsop, Pacifioand "Wahkiakum counties, and any day mav be found from two to twenty ,nQiD nrfennn' nml flpwirtincr with - . , . , ,vQM Qnma nf 1ip freight and passengers. Some of the smaller cram serve iuu tumo imiio that -wagons do in more arid climes. Salmon, lumber, -wheat and flour constitute the great bulk of Astoria's direct shipments, in addition to the 50,000 tons of annual importations. During 1886, for -which time com plete statistics are attainable, freight receipts at Astoria included among other important items not here pre sented, 45,701 boxes tin plate, 814,204 bushels -wheat, 26,991 bbls. flour, 12, 000 tons freight received by merchants from Portland and -way ports, 2.500 tons for Pacific and Chehalis counties, 3,000 tons delivered by small steamers owned in Astoria, 6,000 tons on steam ers to the Sound and Alaska. During the same year Astoria ex ported direct; 156.187 cases salmon, 814,264 bushels -wheat, 26,991 bbls. flour and 2,346,000 feet of lumber, this of an aggregate value of over 81,500, 000. From Astoria indirect, additional, during the same year, -went foreign, 3,064,828 bushels wheat and 801,261 bbls. flour, -worth over $3,500,000. During that year, not counting ves sels in the lumber trade, nor vessels passing Astoria direct from and to other ports, there entered and cleared here 332 vessels foreign, and 384 coast wise. The aggregate tonnage of the 832 foreign -was 335,009 tons an aver of more than a thousand tons bur then to the vessel. The aggregate tonnage of the 384 coastwise, -was 548,637 tons an aver age of over fourteen hundred tons burthen to the vessel Here we have an aggregate of 883, 646 tons tonnage across the Columbia bar in one twelve-months. It is to be borne in mind that that aggregate only represents what was taken offi cial cognizance of by the custom house. To include all that passed in and out would make the total consid erably over one million tons. These facts and figures tend to give some general idea of the importance of Astoria's commerce. MONEY IN A DROP OF SOLDER. A stbiking instance of the extent to which saving machinery is carried nowadays, saya the Industrial Jour nal, is shown in the tin-can industry. Everybody knows that tin cans are manufactured by machinery. One of the machines used in the process sol ders the longitudinal seams of the cans at the rate of fifty a minute, the cans rushing along in a continuous stream. Now, of course, a drop ortwo of solder is left on the can. The drop on the outside "can easily be cleared away, but it is not easy to secure the drop left on the inside. It wouldn't do of course, to retard the speed of the work better waste the drop; it is only a trifle, anyhow, and to 999 men in 3,000 would not seem worth a min ute's attention. The thousandth man worked for a firm using one of these machines, and he set about devising an ingenious arrangement for wiping the inside of the can, thereby saving ihatdrP of solder and leaving none ti come in contact with the contents of the can. He was en couraged by his employers to patent his invention, did so, and has al ready received several thousand dol lars in royalties for its use. As the machine solders 20,000 cans a day, the solder saved by his invention amount ed to about $15 a day. It pays to think as you work. RELATIONS OF FOQ TO DUST. The experiments of M. M. Coulier and Mascart, extended by Aitkin, have demonstrated that in a perfectly moist air no formation of fog is possi ble, however much the temperature iB lowered, so long as the air is abso lutely free from dust, and that the more air, sufficiently moist, is charged with such foreign particles, the more dense is the formation of fog under a sufficient lowering of the temperature or pressure of the air. Let filtered and completely moist air in a glass ball have its pressure diminished, then only a few particles of fog will reveal themselves to the most careful in spection, even under the powerful light of an electric lamp particles of fog which, moreover, yield not the slightest colored image. If they are now admitted into this filtered air a few cubic milimeters of ordinary house air, which always contains nu merous motes or particles of dust, a very fine, silvery, transparent fog will at once form itself, of such slight density that, even in the case of a considerable area of it, the transpar ency of the atmosphere would be but very slightly affected. If at the first moment of its formation a reflected image of the sun, or the reflected light of an electric lamp, be viewed through it, the image will be seen surrounded by an intensely luminous blue or greenish light. These investigations may be said to be the latest, as they are also the most interesting and com plete yet made in this direction. LITTLE PEOPLE. "What is that?" said n teacher to an infant pupil, pointing to a period. of anbif lhe child. Life. You were a nice, quiet little boy in Sunday school this morning, Bob by," said the minister. "I was very much pleased." "Yes," replied Bob by, "pa said that if I'd behave my self in Sunday school I needn't go to church. Ph iladelph la Call. A little Cass-avenuo girl came home from church greatly troubled over the bottomless pit. After awhile she cheered up, saying: "I didn't think of it before, but if the bottom of the pit is out I could get out on the other side, couldn't I." Detroit Tribune. Sunday school teacher Now, chil dren, we must bear in mind that be tween our last week's lessons and this quite a period of time is represented as having elapsed. During this time a very important event has taken place. Yes, Annie, you may tell us what it is. Annie We've all got our fall hats. Philadelphia N-ews. A few mornings since at breakfast, in a rich Clifton home, a little tot paralyzed his maternal progenitor by exclaiming: "Mamma, I lovo you better than I love oatmeal." "Do yon love that much, dear?" was the ten der rejoinder. ''Well, I ain't stuck on it" Cincinnati Telegram. There is a 2-year-old boy iu Kings ton who has an especial fondness for the society of his mother. The other day he stood at the foot of the stairs calling: "Mamma, mamma I" Finally the mother inquired: "Does baby want mamma?" The answer came back: "Baby wants mamma always." Kingston Freeman. A little Boston boy, aged six, is of a very imaginative temperament. Quito recently his mother noticed that at bedtime each night ho laid his little boots together upon their sides, in stead of setting them upright. "Pray tell mo why you always place your boots that way?" said mamma; and the child replied: "Because they must be tired walking so much all day. I lay them sideways so that they can Teat." Springfield Repub lican. TIio Verdict Unanimous. W. D. Suit, Drugcist. Bippus, Irnl., testifies: "I can recommend Electric Bitters as the very best remedy. Ever3 bottle sold lias given relief in every case. One man took six bottles, and was cured of Rheumatism of 10 years' standing." Abraham Hare, druggist, Bellville, Ohio, affirms: "The best selling medi cine I have ever handled in my 20 years' experience, is Electric Bitters." Thou sands of others have added their testi mony, so that the verdict is unanimous that Electric Bitters do cure diseases of the Liver, Kidneys or Blood. Onlv a half dollar a bottle at W.E.
