They are invaluable. For some years I was a victim to Liver Complaint, in consequence of -which I suffered from General Debility and Indi gestion. A few bores of Ayer's Pills restored me to perfect health. W. T. Brightney, Henderson, W. Va. For years I have relied moro upon Ayer's Pills than anything else, to Regulate my bowels. These Pills are mild in ac tion, and do their work thoroughly. I have used them, with good effect, in cases of Rheumatism and Dyspepsia. G. F. Miller, Attleborough, Mass. Ayer's Pills cured me of Stomach and Liver troubles, fromwhichl had suffered for years. I consider them the best pills made, and would not bo without tliem. Morris Gates, Downsville, N. Y. I was attacked with Bilious Fever, which was followed by Jaundice, and was so dangerously ill that my friends despaired of my recovery. I commenced taking Ayer's Pills, and soon regained mv customary strength and vigor. John C. Pattison, Lowell, Nebraska. Last spring I suffered greatly from a troublesomenumor on my side. In spito of every effort to cure this eruption, it in creased until the flesh became entirely raw. I was troubled, at the same tune, with Iudigestion, and distressing pains in The Bowels. By the advice of a friend I began taking Ayer's Pills. In a short time I was free from pain , my food digested properly, tho sores on my body commenced healing, and, in less than one month, I was cured. Samuel D. "White, Atlanta, Ga. I have long used Ayer's Pills, in my family, and believe them to be tho best pills made. S. C. Darden, Darden, Mis3. My wife and little girl were taken with Dysentery a few days ago, and I at once began giving them small doses of Ayer'a Pills, thinking I would call a doctor if the disease became any worse. In a short time the bloody discharges stopped, all pain went away, and health was restored. Theodore Esling, Richmond, Va. tt Ayer's Pills, Prepared by Dr. J. C. The cause lies in the torpidity of the liver. A regular habit of body can be secured by taking Simmons Liver Regulator to aid digestion, to f timulate the dull and sluggish liver, and rid the system of ex cessive and poisonous bile. PBOHTBITIOff-IN ASTORIA. Editor Astorian : As you have kindly granted m e space ("if I will be brief) to dis cuss prohibition, I will come to the point at once in replying to your "Prohibition in Astoria" bj saying you are correct when you assert that the interest in the re sult of the vote on this question is increasing as the day draws near: You think it "scarcely possible that the voters of this state will vote favorably on so visionary and impracticable a questipn." Well, brother Halloran, it is just possible that even a majority of the" legal voters of Oregon may vote favora bly on prohibition; but if only the illegal voters (women), who are the great suffierers from this ac cursed traffic, were allowed a voice there would be. no question as to the result on the 8th day of next November. You say it is the "old question of theory versus practice." Well-, if I mistake not, theory al ways has and must precede prac tice. All men and women of em inence, as well as all great dis coverers and inventors have been theorists; and many of them have been made to suffer even death at the stake or block. The world was believed to be flat until a the orist proved it to be spherical. That same old song which is so fa miliar to us just now, "prohibition cannot prohibit," "liquor "will be drunk just the same whether the state goes wet or dry," is likely to be somewhat changed in the near future to prohibition is marching on set to the meter of "Johu Brown." Your principal argument seems to be baied on the necessity of the liquor traffic to give support to the life and wealth of our cities and country; and if we get pro hibition it will be at the cost of cutting the ground from under our feet. You back this argu ment by figures, which nvght to casual or uninterested, observes be, convincing Jandpo.sitlve proof that the liquor traffic was a nr cp-?-sity to thp welfare and growth of our cities and nation as well. But not so to the "Prohibition cranks." Let us now come together in a gener.ms way, the only right way, and compare notes and figure.-: on this th greatest question of nr age. Wo will then see if pr lihiiiou will bo likely to dig a hole dci'p piiough for the U. S. or won Astoria to drop down to the cen ter of gravity or near enough to smell brimstone. You s'sow us that last year the liquor tax paid about one-third of all our city ex penses. But you did not tell us how much of this $27,3 14.70 was due to this nefarious business. How many extra policemen were required? How many :cascs in every term of court wore due to liquor? How many fires origin ated in saloons? to say nothing of the misery and destruction to life and happiness. I feel confi dent that if we could obtain the figures of expense directly due to the liquor traffic in Astoria, it would equal far more than one half of all our city and county ex penses. In proof of this let me offer a few figures aud testimonials from those localities where prohi bition is only partially enforced. First, let me quote from Hon. J. G. Blaine. He says: "Intemper ance nas steadily decreased in Maine since the first enactment of the prohibition law, until now it can be said with truth that there is no equal number of people in the Anglosaxon world among whom so small an amount of intoxicating liquor is consumed as among the 650,000 inhabitants of Maine." And how about taxes? I am told that here in Astoria we have over 60 saloons, and our taxes in Clatsop county are from $5 to $6 per capita. In prohibition Kan sas it is 20 cents per canita. In prohibition Maine and Vermont it is 10 cents per capita, while in high license Illinois it is $7 per capita. What does this prove? It simplv proves that our saloons -cause at least four-fifths, of all our crime and taxes. I assure the public that I shall take great pleasure in continuing this discusion, and shall produce testimonials and figures from among the best and ablest thinkers of our nation as well as Europe.
