Patrick Henry was the first gov
ernor of Illinois. In 177S Vir
ginia created the county of Illi-
j nois (in Virginia), which embraepd
the territory now forming the
states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois
Michigan and Wisconsin, making
probably the largest county ever
organized, exceeding the whole of
Great Britain and Ireland; and
thus the great orator of the Revo
lution, then governor of Virginia,
became jrovernor of Illinois.
On Saturday, Samuel Sander
son, a sailor, and a resident of Ab

blow up the wreck of the Si
Tamsctjee Family lying off Qui
nault on the point of Elizabeth
reef, while engaged in experi
menting with dynamite on the
river in a canoe, in which were
also two Indian boys, had his
right hand blown completely off
by the bursting of a cartridge,
which he had ignited and was
holding in his haud at the time.
Some defect in the fuse was pre
sumably the cause. The wonder
is that it did not kill him outright.
