There is an ingenious contrivance at Herman Wise's, by means of which the exact shape of one's head can be delineated on a small piece of paper. The several sizes and shapes of cra niums form interesting subjects of comparison. At the annual meeting of the stock holders of the Occident Packing com pany held yesterdaj-, the following officers were elected: Board of di rectors August Hendrickson, Chas. Larson, Jacob Moore, Erik Maunula, Em Maunula: president, Chas. Lar Lar eon: W. L. Bobb, book-keeper this being the latter's seventh year in that capacity. The ladies of the Baptist church will have a literary and social enter tainment and aupper at the Y. M. C. A. rooms to-morrow evening, to all of which a general invitation is extended. There will be a nominal charge of ten cents admission, and all who attend may count on a pleasant evening. The literary part of the entertainment will be followed by a fine supper. Pricemont, the two-year-old colt which won tho Altamont purse at the state fair, distancing all competitors, has done well for his owner. The Albany Democrat says that previous to the fair his owner, Mr. Smith, was not worth a cent except tho value of his horse, for which he paid SGOO. Since then the horse has won 81,100 for him and he has refused 82,500 for the animal. The demand for lumber is makiug lively times on Gray's harbor. At Hoouiam, alone, the mill company's store has average sales of 8800 a day, which is pretty good for a place that has but 200. Hoquiam, Aberdeen, Montesano, Cosmopolis, on Gray's harbor are all growing towns, and with proper effort Astoria can secure and hold a profitable wholesale trade with that section, To the list of subscribers to the railroad subsidy are to be added Oapt. Among the many passengers that sailed on the ill-fated Brother Jona than, in July, 1865, was a young lady of the name of Miss Netley Shipser, who went down with the vessel when shewasloBt The wreck of theDrother Jonathan has now been found, and her mother, Mrs. I. Shipser, hopes to recover the body of her long-lost daughter. In conversation with a Post? reporter -the lady said: "I ex pect to find my daughter in the bridal ohamber. I have been searching for her these past twenty years, and now my prayer is granted." The Albany Herald says: A farm er near Harrisburg, Linn county, raised thirty-two watermelons this year, and ho had to shoot salt into the legs of seven different boys to keep the melons at home. His law yers' fees and court costs have been 8625 to date. Divided by thirty-two and you get the cost of a home-made melon, though the old man had lots of fun in shoot ing. Nothing is said about the bill for "pain killer," from which jt is in ferred that the seven boys carried away melons in their arms as well as salt in their legs." On his arrival yesterday in charge of the Manzanita, Capt O. S. Kich ardson found his offioial appointment as master of that vessel awaiting him. He has been appointed to that re sponsible position by tho secretary of the treasury. The Astorian con gratulates Captain Richardson on his deserved promotion. First officer W. E. There are ten others sick with the disease. the liquor and tobacco tax Washington, D. C, Oct 4. Com missioner of internal revenue Miller is preparing a statement showing to what extent the receipts of the gov ernment would be diminished by ab solute repeal of the internal revenue tax. In discussing this subject Mr. Miller said he did not believe the peo ple of the United States, if given an opportunity to vote on the question, would favor the abolition of the tax on whisky. The government can well afford to get along without tho reve nuo derived from tobacco, but there is an overwhelming sentiment against free whiskey. Mr. Miller claims that the prohibition sentimeut is growing very rapidly in this country, and he cites as proof the decline in tho man ufacture of whisky during the last fiscal year as compared with the pre vious year. For the year ended June 30, 1886, tho internal revenue receipt's for dis tilled spirits were 809,092,266. Dur ing tho year ended June 30. 1887, the receipts dropped down to $65,829,321. 71, making a decrease of 83,262,944. 29. For several years past there has been a gradual falling off in the man ufacture of distilled spirits, which is attributed to the more temperate habits of Americans. While the man ufacture of whisky is on tho decrease, the brewing of beer is more exten sive, and that beverage is now the popular American drink. The re ceipts from beer during the past fis cal year were 821,922,187.48, against 819,676,731.29 the year previous, thus showing an increase of 82,245,456.20. Commissioner Miller proposes at an early day to have a chemical analysis made by the department chemist of all the various brands of beer manu factured. It is alleged that certain brewers use more alcohol in their beer than the law allows, and the pro pose 3 test will probably create a rev olution among the makers of what is supposed to bo standard beer. The result of the test will undoubtedly benefit some, while it will certainly injures. Altogether it is considered a good idea, and calculated to ba ap preciated by the consumers of beer. They differ in different individuals to some extent. A Bilious man is seldom a breakfast eater. To frequently, alas, he has an excellent appetite for li quids but none for solidByOfa morn ing. His tongue will hardly bear in spection at any time; if it is not white and furred, it is rough at all events. The digestive system is wholly out of order and Diarrhea or Constipation may be a symptom or the two may al ternate. There aro often Hemor rhoids or even loss of blood. There may be giddiness and often headache and acidity or flatulence and tender ness m the pit of the stomach.
