Leathers boat shop, over Arn.-lt&Fercoon's: foot of Lafavetta street, What They Say Over the Water. London, Oct. 2. The papers yesterday all had long editorials on theVblwitcer's victory Friday. The Telegraph says: "We are whipped. The Volunteer has, for the second time, beat the 2'histle and that cup which it was hoped and prayed by every Briton that she Awould recover must now re main in the United States." The Chronicle regards the de feat as conclusive and remarks that the defeat must be accepted with good grace. The Sjtortsman looks on the result as a defeat of the most de cisive character, and adds: "It has now been demonstrated that the type of yachts built on the American side are much swifter than those constructed in Great Britain." The Daily Neics concludes a generous article with this sentence: "We adiiere to our opinion that England has to learn a lesson from America in this branch of ship building and we had better set about learningat once. The moral of our five and thirty years of fair ly continuous disaster ought not longer to be ignored.' ' The Pish Commissioners. State fish commissioners Thomp son and Campbell left yesterday afternoon for the salmon hatchery on the Clackamas river. The for mer said the dam there had been injured somewhat and will need repairs, but nevertheless there is considerable water. Last Thurs day ihere were 200,000 eggs in the hatchery and additions are being made at the rate of 30,G00 to 50, 000 a day. Commissioner Thompson has just returned from Yaquina ba', where, with state representate Pomeroy, who is a member of a special committee on fisheries, he attempted to ascertain the wants of the people in the fish line. Rain fell incessantly while thev were there and they were unable to ac complish their object. Tlrs trip finishes all the visiting to be done this season, but nextyear Yaquina, Coos bay, Tillamook, Alsea and Coquille will be investigated. Mr. Thompson says Yaquina river is a small stream and if the people de sire to protect their fish they had better begin at once. The out come of all this labor will be a fish bill, to be presented to the next legislature for passage. It will apply to the entire state and be much stronger than the present law. JVetcs, .9, Siuslaw and Ooquille. One of the fishermen found a shark seven feet long in his net near the hay barn at North Bend last week. The fish did consider able damage to the net. It is reported that the English Flasr Packincr conmanv is pettina about 1,200 fish per day on the ooquille and that about 2,500 fish per day aro captured in that stream. Last Thursday Bergman's caw'- nery, on the Siuslaw, took 300 fish, and the Other two eannnrips nn the river captured about an equal number each, making 900 in one day. Marshall's cannery has been re ceiving about 500 fish per dav and has put up about 2,500 cases. A shipment of 1,000 cases was made on the Areata. The silver salmon are now beginning to come in and a big run is looked for. Three boats Friday night caught 150. A net with smaller meshes than those used for the larger fish will be em ployed.
