Ayer's Pills. They are invaluable.
For some years I -was a victim to liver
Complaint, in consequence of which I
suffered from General Debility and Indi
gestion. A few boxes of Ayer's Pills
restored me to perfecfcjiealth. W.T.
Brightney, Henderson, W. Va.
For yeara I have relied more upon
Ayer's Pills than anything else, to
Regulate
my bowels. These Pills are mild in ac
tion, and do their work thoroughly. I
have used them, with good effect, in
cases of Rheumatism and Dyspepsia.
lx. x Miller, Attieborougb, Mass.
Ayer's Pills cured me of Stomach and
Liver troubles, from which I had suffered
for years. I consider them the best pilla
made, and would not be without them.
Morris Gates, Downsville, N. Y.
I was attacked with Bilious Fever,
which was followed by Jaundice, and
was so dangerously ill -that my friends
despaired of my recovery. I commenced
taking Ayer's Pills, and soon regained
my customary strength and vigor.
John C. Pattison, Lowell, Nebraska.
Last spring I suffered greatly from a
troublesome numoronmy side. In spite
of every effort to cure this eruption, it in
creased until the flesh became entirely
raw. I was troubled, at the same time,
with Indigestion, and distressing pains in
The Bowels.
By the advice of a friend I began taking
Ayer's Pills. In a short time I was free
from pain, my food digested properly, tho
sores on my body commenced healing,
and, in less than onemonth,Iwas cured.
Samuel D. "White, Atlanta, Ga.
I have long used Ayer's Pills, in my

My wife and little girl were taken with
Dysentery a few days ago, and I at once
began giving them small doses of Ayer's

disease became any worse. In a short
time tho bloody discharges stopped, all
pain went away, and health was restored.

PROHIBITION IN TENNESSEE.
Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 29.
The election to-day on adoption of
the prohibition amendment passed
off with remarkable quietude all
over the state. A feature of it was
the presence of ladies at the polls
working and pleading with voters
to cast the ballots for the amend
ment. Lunches, with hot coffee,
were served by them at the polling
places. A like sight was never
witnessed before in Nashville.
There is no doubt that to the la
dies1 presence is due much of the
cutting down of the anti-prohibition
majority in this county. Re
turns are yet incomplete. Figures
so far received here indicate that
the amendment has been defeated
by 10,000 to 15,000. Memphis
advices state that the figures there
show about the same result.
Knoxville says prohibition is
probably defeated by a
very small majority, although
returns from the eastern part of
the state show a large majority in
that section for the amendment.
The negro vote about Knoxville
was almost solid against prohibi
tion. From all over the state
comes the same story of the work
of the ladies at the polls.
Chattanooga, Tenn., Sept. 29.
Dispatches from all sections of
the state, representing 105,000
voles out of a total of 250,000,
give a total of about 5,000 against
the amendment. Returns arc a
complete surprise and upset all
conjectures, making the result
doubtful with chances in favor of
the defeat of the amendment.
Both parlies claim a victory.
Nashville, Sept. 29. By the
latest returns 125,000 votes, repre
senting half of the probable total
vote of the state, have been re
ported and the majority against
prohibition is about 7,000. Much
depends on the back counties, and
the fate of the amendment is still
in doubt.
A Story of Senator IngailB.
The following story va- recently
repeated by senator IngalU of
Kansas. The senator parried nil
questions relating to public mat
ters, but in reply to an inquiry re
garding tne popularit3' of Tuttle f
Iowa, he said: "Tuttle, Tut!-.
Tuttle? Oh. yes; I know Tuttle
very well; at least I used to knv
him. Tuttle is a tailor a.fashion
able tailor. I knew him well in
my early days in Boston. The firm
was Call & Tuttle. I don't know
whether the firm is the same now,
or whether it has undergone some
change. I never inquired about it
since I left Boston, but 1 remem
ber the name very well- Call &
Tuttle. I remember also that a
countryman was walking along the
street one day, stopped and read
the sign, 'Call & Tuttle,' and en
tered the shop. The cleik said:
'"Well, what can I do for you, sir?1
and the countryman explained
that he wanted to 'Tuttle.' See
ing the sign outside and accepting
the invitation contained in it, he
called to Tuttle. Tuttle, he
thought, was some new Boston
game that every real gentleman
ought to play."
Ayer's Pills are an invaluable
remedy for all diseases of the
stomach, -liver, and bowols. This
medicine should be kept in every
familv.

Remarks Prom Our Neighbor.
The bright dream of Astoria in
the consummation of her rail con
nection with the outside world, is
about to be realizod, and the fact
that the bonus of 150,000 is so
nearly raised will justify us in re
marking that within eighteen
months our neighbor on the Co
lumbia, and by the by, the metrop
olis of the upper coast, will have
connection with an all rail route to
the east via San Francisco, and
an all rail route to the east via
Union Pacific and Northern Pa
cific R. R. We of this side of the
river are but fifteen miles away
and the benefits to be derived to
us from the accomplishment of
this bit of railroad is readily ap
parent; there is no need to enu
merate or go into detail. We, how
ever, in the course of these re
marks would like to recall to the
public mind the importance and
necessity of our railroad project;
that is, the one along the beach
from here to Ilwaco. "Why should
we remain in an attitude of innoc
uous desuetude when so much
could be accomplished at this time
by a little energy? Look at the
untold benefit that would certainly
accrue to our county, not only to
the southern portion but to every
part of it, if this railroad was built I
We have a steamboat under con
templation which, when completed,
will make rapid trips to all points
on the bay, besides make connec
tion at North Cove with the har
bor. Now then if we but had the
road for the steamer to connect
with and that in turn connected
with Astoria and her system of
proposed line, what would be the
result? Why, it would be the
same, or nearly so, as having a
transcontinental rail route to this
county. Pacific Journal.

PENALTIES OP IMPRUDENCE.
Summer is at hand -tho time of
year when old heads and young be
come imprudent, get overheated,
cool off suddenly, catch cold, head
ache, nervous disorders, and a thou
sand and one other troubles. Preach
ing prudence is played out. The only
thing to do is after you have con
tracted one or more of these pains
to cure yourself as quickly as
possible. Small pains are not to be
neglected except at the risk of seri
ous consequences. Remove them at
once. It can be done by an applica
tion of one or more of Allcock's
Pobous Plasters, recognized the
world over as the best external
remedy ever made. Mind you, don't
neglect your little ills. They out
grow everything else and if let alone
cost you more, than you can ever
know. Remember Allcocz's Plas-

It is reported that the American

ruined nv the adulteration of the

the buyers refused to accept their
cargo.
It is a fact that in the north
most of the prohibition vote comes
from the Republicans while in the
south it draws mainly from the
Democrats, The explanation is
that the remarkable sentiment de
veloped in the south in favor of
restricting the liquor traffic is due
to the desire of the better class of
whites to keep liquor away from
the negroes.
