"When the eyes become weak, and the lids inflamed and sore, it is an evidence that the system has become disordered by Scrofula, for which Ayer's Sarsaparilla is the best known remedy. Scrofula, which produced a painful in flammation in my eyes, caused me much suffering for a number of years. By the advice of a physician I commenced taking Ayer's Sarsaparilla. After using this medicine a short time I was completely Cured My' eyes are now in a splendid condi tion, and I am as well and strong as ever. Mrs. "William Gage, Concord, N. H. For a number of years I was troubled with a humor in my eyes, and was unable to obtain any relief until I commenced using Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Tliis medi cine has effected a complete cure, and I believe it to bo tho best of blood puri fiers. C. E. Upton, Kashua, N. H. From childhood, and until with a few months, I have been afflicted with Weak and Sore Eyes. I have used for theso comnlaints. with beneficial results. Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and consider it a great blood purifier. Mr3. C. Phillips, Glover, vt. I suffered for a vear with inflamma tion in my left eyo. Three ulcers formed on tho ball, depriving mo of sight, and causing great pain. After trying many other remedies, to no purpose, Iwas final ly induced to use Ayer's Sarsaparilla. By Taking three bottles of this medicine I have been entirely cured. My sight has bt-cn re stored, and there is no sign of inflamma tion, sore, or ulcer in my eye. Kendal T. Bowen, Sugar Tree Ridge, Ohio. My daughter, ten years old, was afflict ed with Scrofulous Sore Eyes. During tho last two years she never saw light of any kind. 'Physicians of the highest standing exerted their skill, but with no permanent success. On tho recommen dation of a friend I purchased a bottle uf Ayer's Sarsaparilla, which my daughter commenced taking. Before she had used the third lottle her sight was restored. Her euro is complete. Sax Francisco, Sept. 28. The following interview with senator Stanford is published here to-day. The senator is reported as saying: "Let me outline to you the grand trunk railway that is one of the approaching possibilities for the Pacific: coast. I hope in less than two years to see the road running down through San Louis Obispo opened up as far as Los Angeles. This coast road, with the one running to Portland, will make a short continuous trunk line from the latter city to Los Angeles. Now from the very log ic of the railway position up north, it is safe to predict that the North ern Pacific will extend its road running from Portland to Tacom a, still farther northward into Wash ington territory, and to a connec tion with the Canadian Pacific. But if this does not turn out to be directly true, the same con nection between the Northern Pa cific and the Canadian Pacific will be accomplished by both building into "Washington territory. There will be a straight system through from Los Angeles to Vancouver. In its course it will touch immedi ately every important part of coun try on this coast, and cross all of the traescontinental roads now in existence, or that can possibly be built in the future." Heavy Railroad Work. San Feancisco, Sept. 28. One of the most stupendous pieces of railway construction ever attempt ed in California, is the building of a thirty-mile extension of the Don ahue line frome Cloverdale to Ukiah. The route is through mountains the whole distance and many engineering difficulties have been experienced. The construc tion work was begun about Au gust 1st, and though over 500 men have been at work on it, the road bed has been built a distance of only one mile out of town. Be tween Cloverdale and Ukiah five tunnels will be built. -The first will be about 350 feet in length and others be 1,750, 1,287, 450 and 305 respectively. The long est is looated four miles out, and work on it is going on from both sides. A Wheat Bate Made. The Northern Pacific and O. R. & N. companies have agreed to put into effect a rate of $5 per ton of 2,000 pounds on wheat shipped from points between "Wallula and Palouse Junction to Portland, and 86.50 per ton from Palouse Junc tion and all points east of there in Washington territory, on the main line and branches to Portland. The same rate will be put into ef fect via tho Cascade division to Tacoma. This $6.50 rate also ap plies from all points on the O. R. & N. Co.'s Palouse branch to Port land. It restores a natural color to faded and gray hair, and renders it pliant and glossy. J A Difficult Position. s . Secretary Bayard is having great ; difficulty in finding suitable men who are willing to serve on tne proposed fisheries commission, that it is liis desire to appoint to con sult with the British commission. It is understood that he proposes that the commission shall consider four questions now presenting themselves as between tho United States and England, viz: The At lantic fisheries, the Alaska seal fisheries, the Alaskan boundary disnute. and the question of com mercial reciprocity or free trade between Canada and the United States, as advocated by represen tative Butterworth. lc is difficult to get any one of prominent abili ty to go on the commission, how ever, because there is nothing in the position that promises "any thing but severe criticism. Port Townsend Argus: Air. James G. Swan received a letter from Air. Thomas Mowat, inspec tor of fisheries, Iew Westminster, B. C, in which he writes: "I am making preparations now to re ceive some lobsters which are pres ent being caught at Bay de Cha leur, and which I expect will ar rive here by the end of October. We. also expect to have 50,000 or 100,000 young fry aluuzsalma sa lar, a true salmon, for a trial in some 01 our small islanil rivers where the water is cold, dear and more after the nature of our east ern streams." Mr. Swan has gone to Victoria in connection with the U. S. fish commission, to procure dates relative to the introduction of lobsters, true salmon, shad and other fish into our waters. T evey.' Trice 10 and uO'ccnts. J. W. Conu. The Southern Pacific company has isued a handsomely illustrated pamphlet descriptive of the route from San Francisco to Portland. On the last page is a picture en tilled '-Greeting of Oregon to Cn if I'-iiia.' It representsa fat. good naturtMl looking duck extending her webfoot to be shaken by the paw of a grizzly bear. Under the duck is a translation of the motto of Oregon, "I fly with my own wings," and under the bear the motto of California, "I have found it" "Shake." A Useful Precaution. It is a useful precaution for the tourist, the commercial traveler, or the emigrant to the West, to take alouj; Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. Invalids who travel by steamboat or rail should provide themselves with It, In order to prevent or remedy the nausea which the Jarring and vibration or vehicles in transitu often causes them. Vastly pref erable is it for this simple, but needful pur pose, to the heady unmedlcated stimulants of commerce. Ou board ship it not only remedies seasickness, but ueutralizes the pernicious effects of water slightly brackish, which, if unqualified. Is apt to give rise to irregularities of the bowels, cramps in the abdominal region, and dyspepsia. To the aerial poison of malaria It Is an efficient an tidote. Sick headache, heartburn, and wind upon the .stomach are promptly banished by It. It healthfully stimulate the kidneys and bladder, and nullities the early symptoms of rheumatism. The experience of the last few years in Europe illustrates the control which science has obtained over this disease, which a genera tion ago seemed beyond human restraint. In civilized countries it can now usually be confined with in narrow limits. From the Rev. John 3tathew., Pastor 31. E. Church, South, at 3Ionf pomery, Ala.
