If you want to illustrate tho ex

scarce as idle men in Astoria." Ev

On next Saturday the Telephone

regular trips will continue as usual.

The O. K. & N. steamer R. Ii.
Thompson has been put on the reg
ular daily service between Portland
and Astoria, in place of steamer
Mountain Queen, and tho schedule
time lor Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Sundays is abolished.
The Astobian suggests to the rail
road committee that tho circulation
of a few more of those subscription
papers would probably res nit in se
curing several hundred, fifty and
twenty-five dollar subscriptions.
Every little helps, and one way to
make a thing successful is to get as
many as possible interested iu it.
The Premier, the Canadian Pa
cific's new steamer, will have a spec d
of fifteen knots an hour. She has
triple expansion engines of 1,100 horse
power. The company proposes build
ing another steamer of more than
double the power of the Premier, to
run between Vancouver, Victoria,
Astoria, and Portland in connection
with the Canadian Pacific railroad.
John C. New, ex-treasurer of tho
United States and editor of the Indi
anapolis Journal, is in San Francis
oo. He is one of the men associated
with Col. Woodard, who wrote stat
ing that the raising of a $150,000 Bub
sidy would insure the building of a
railroad to Astoria inside of a year.
CoL Woodard is understood to be
backed by millions, and, practically,
he can have all tho money he wants.
A youth from North Carolina, an
swering to the name of Baird is af
fording much mirth to tho ungodly
San Francisco reporters. He ap
plied to a sailor boarding house for
"light work aboard "ship," and was
obligingly given a birth "aboard tho
ship Cedric the Saxon, bound for
Liverpool. He got tired of the "light
work" very soon and telegraphed to
his papa for money to get back home.
The suggestion is made to Tiie As
tobian that the city vote the subsidy
of lbU,00U and issue bonds to that
amount, payable in 30 years, drawing
5 per cent, ffhe source entitles it to
respectful consideration, but Tub As
tobian takes no stock in tho scheme
and doesn't believe that tho proposi
tion is either sensible or practical.
Thismaybeblunt,butit is our candid
opinion all the same. The money
should be raised, but not that way.
New boilers of a peculiar pattern
were placed on board the tug Astoria
at San Francisco last Saturday, and
none of the kind have ever been
placed on a marine vessel before.
There are three cylinders instead of
one, and the cylindrical parts, being
small, require less thickness of iron
for the Bame high pressure of steam.
All the parts being circular in form
they require'a less amount of staving
and it is claimed that tho consump
tion of coal is greatly reduced. The
designs of the new boilers have been
sent to the naval authorities at
Washington, where the idea received
warm commendation. A large num
ber of mechanics and steamboat men
have visited the tug to see tho new
boilers.
The Pittsburg Oil company has
succeeded in making a deal with in
dependent producers to slopover-pro-duotion
and prevent further breaks

merely fail to make the difference iu
the price of 6,000,000 barrels of oil

nothing, because they have bought

Chimneys ought to be examined
frequently to make sure that there
aro no cracks in them. It is an ex
cellent plan to have the chimney so
constructed that it is never concealed
by the wall of a room, thus prevent
ing a thorough examination of it. A
house often settles, and this cracks
the chimney, but the crack is hidden.
By and by fire makes its way out,
and a "mysterious fire" results. All
chimneys ought to be well plastered
with good mortar outside and in
when they are bnilt, and the work of
the mason should bo inspected thor
oughly to make sure ho does a good
job. The chimuey should be cleand
twice a year.w If this is done it will
not be likely to "burn out" If it
does get on fire throw a handful of
salt in the stove. This will deaden
the fire almost immediately.

Not a Boom but a Gamble.
Mr. E. A. Taylor, who has just re
turned from an extended visit to
southern Oregon and central Califor
nia, says that tho craze there regard
in!? real estate has developed into n
mania, ana mat property 13 oougui
and sold regardless of relative value,
and disposed of at prices that no
sane man would pay, unless he wore
gambling just as in any other gam
bling game. He oites as an instance
the fact that lots were sold in J-ios
Angeles laBt week at $-1,000 a front
foot, while right on Market street m
the heart of San Francisco desirable
lots covered with massive brick
structures can be had for 2,500 a
front foot. It is not a "boom," it is a
craze. A good many who went in
with their littlo savings have mado n
strike and have put in their winnings
and their originnl capital in an effort
to call the turn. Tho chances are
that a good many honost'peqple of
limited means .will be badly cinched.
Sooner or later such a bubble will
burst.

NEW YORK STOCKS.
New York, Sept 20. Stocks op
ened here extremely active and very
irregular, tho changes from last
evening's final figures ranging up to
per cent both ways. Among the
active lists market displayed great
feverishness and irregularity, con
tinued to be the feature, but most of
the stocks were weak. A sharp rally
then took placo and there was a
sharp decrease in the amount of busi
ness, but the tone continued feverish.

Fatal Accident Near OyjtervIIIp.
Tho United Slates survey steamor
HcArthur, iu chargo of Lieut. J. S.
Burnett, U. S. N., came in from
Shoalwater bay, with her flag half
masted, on a most melancholy er
rand yesterday.
Last Sunday afternoon tho JIcAr
thur, tho crew of which have been
engaged in surveying Shoalwator
bay, was lying about half a mile from
shore, when ensign N. S. Mosely
and draughtsman Whetmoro started
in a small sail boat to go ashore at
Oysterville for tho mail. When half
way across, the sea being calm and
tho sail dead, a sudden squall strnok
tho boat and before it conld get any
headway, capsized, throwing both oc
cupants into the water, where they
struggled for fhreo or four hours.
Finally, when about ready to sink
through we'ariness, they got tho boat
righted and got to shoro more dead
than alive. Upon getting to shore
they were taken out of the boat, kind
ly eared for, and carried to tho lorn
Morris, and brought out by that boat
to the McArUiur.
Mr. Whetmore soon recovered, but
ensign Mo3ely was evidently so over
come by exposure as to be dying.
The unfortunate young man lin
gered till nightfall, when a violent
congestive chill carried him. off.
The officers on board feel as though
they had lost a Brother and aro in
grief at the Joss of a kindly com
panion. The young man was a native -of
Stockton, California, where he leaves
a wife and infant child. He was in
the 21th year of his age.
Tho body will bo embalmed hero
and taken to.California on the next
steamer.
