Electricity can travel 2SS,000 miles per second under favorable circumstances. One million bushels of edible oysters, it is estimated, were caught in the waters of .Long isl and sound during the past year. Many Mormons have settled in the Mexican state of Chihuahua and engaged in raising wheat. The "Melograph" has been in vented, by which a person can im provise on a piano and have the mnsic recorded. Of the 600,000 bushels of beans consumed by the New England states the latter only grow one tenth of the amount. The first iron boat is said to have been built in 1777, on the river Foss, in Yorkshire. It was fifteen feet long and made of sheet iron. Thus far there have been eleven railway accidents with large loss of life this year. In all these over 200 people were killed and more than six hundred injured. The Boston Globe denies the widely published statement that there are 125,000 marriageable widows in Massachusetts. It says the number js only 97,158. A British sea captain says that whales are increasing in number so fast that accidents to ships from running into them will soon be of frequent occurrence. The Bartlett pear is of English origin; it came to this country from Berkshire about eighty years ago, and was developed by Enoch Bartlett, of Dorchester, Mass. In one pew in a church in Des Moines, Iowa, sit the widows of seven clergyment, and yet there are only two women in the pew. One of them is tho 'relict" of three, and the other the surviving partner of four divines. The White Mountains have come to be worth over $2,000,000 a year to the people of New Hampshire. In 1884 the tourist business in that section was scarce ly $15,000. No account is taken of the gains to the railroads in this estimate. The eight longest rivers in the world, according to the calcula tions of Major General A. Von Tiblo, are as follews: Missouri Mississippi, 4,194; Nile, 4,020; Yang-tse-Klang, 3,138; Amazon, 3,063; Yenesai-Scanga, 2,950; Amur, 2,950; Congo, 2,883; Mac kenzie, 2,868. Mr. Edison's latest invention is the "pyromagnetic dynamo," a machine for producing electricity directly from fuel. If this inven tion turns out as satisfactory as Mr. Edison has reason to expect, every house can be lighted by electricity by simply utilizing the waste heat in stoves and furnaces. The growth of insanity is orik of the most serious features of the times. From April 1, 1885, to April 1, 18S6, there were ad judged to be insane by the courts of Illinois 1,526 men and women.
