TZJ Wt Sails $toratt. ASTOBIAOREGON: TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 20. 1887 NOT AN EXPERIMENT. The latest authentic regarding the railroad is a direct statement irom headquarters that if if if IF the sub sidy of $150,000 is raised the parties negotiating the matter when notified of the fact rill place preliminary sur veyors in the field and "if' they pro nounce it feasible the railroad will be built. The Astobian takes pleasure in in forming the gentlemen that routes have been surveyed on three separate occasions and the approaches, gradi ents, etc., have been pronounced by competent engineers in every way satisfactory. The last was made by Mr. Hurlburt, between here and For est Grove, four years ago and he in formed us at the time that the route was a most excellent one in every re spect So on that score no doubt need be entertained, and as far as the Colum bia river route, and the route by way of Forest Grove, the matter is not an untried experiment, but a demon strated fact In the meantime let the question "How is the subsidy getting along?" now asked from Lewiston to the sea, and from San Diego to Alaska, let it not languish. Help it all you can to grow. That is the main point and the vital essential. A socrETr for the promotion of the higher education of women has been founded in Japan under the presi dentship of tho prime minister, and with the support of various foreign and Japanese gentlemen. Besides regular courses of instruction which will be provided, special courses of afternoon lectures will be delivered by the "professors of the university. The whole institution will bo under the control of a foreign lady princi pal, assisted by two or more foreign lady teachers. The result of the Northern Pacific railroad election is one of those happy events that gives every community, no matter how apparently diverse their interests, something to rejoice over. When Portland, Seattle and Tacoma can each heartily celebrate and re joioe over the same action, it is, in deed, a pleasure. The English Salmon Market. The London Qrocer of August 17th says of the salmon market in that city: The trade in salmon is becoming something of a mystery, as, while parties are to be met with who make out that there is "nothing doing," and the market is practically a blank others inform us that unabated firmness exists for choioe brands, and that more business is passing in the inferior packs at relatively moderate prices. Which is the true version re specting the article we leave our readers "to judge for themselves, merely annexing a few quotations at which offers "for such and such lots have been made and aotually accept ed, viz., Columbia river fish at 28s to 28s 6d, finest Frazer river salmon at or nearly the same money. Behring sea fish by the Arc tic Packing company at 26s in London, or 25s 3d in Liverpool, both ex wharf, and the ''Tomahawk" brand at 24s 9d and 24s per case of 1-Ib tins. Of the Liverpool market the same authority says: There is a very strong market for salmon, and the undoubtedly short catch will still further strength en prices, although the con sumptive demand is being most satis factorily maintained. This may be attriDUtea to tne extreme regularity ond fine quality of last season's paok, the public evidently appreciating a good and reliable article. There are still several poor parcels of Hast sea son's on hand, which are found diffi cult to dispose of. Quotations for Columbia river are, fiat tins 33s, tall 28 29s, outside rivers, tall tins 25 26s. A Valuable Cargo. 0 The most valuable general cargo whioh has left this port in years will be carried by the British ship Lang dale, which sails to-morrow for Liv erpool. The estimated value in round figures is $50U,UtKJ, and the most in teresting fact connected with it is that it consists entirely of Calfornia products. The following items from her bill of lading will give an idea of what she will convey to .bngland as samples of the varied -products of Cal Cal ieornia: Sixty-three thousand, seven hundred and thirty-one cases of canned- fruit, 14,362 cases of canned salmon, 64 casks of pearl shells, 1,609 cases of'eucalyptas oU, 395 barrels of the same. 66 pounds of elk-horn, 25 tons oi cotton, l.yyj saoks of borax, 111 bales of wool, 856 barrels of grape brandy, 450 puncheons and 716 bar rels of wine, 30 cases of champagne and some tons of mint sweepings. a. j?. auueun, is.
