New York, Sept. 16. The American yachts Volunteer and Mayflower again started this morning to sail the first of the three trial races that are to decide which of the yachts shall defend the America's cup against the Scotch yacht Thistle. The wind was howling through the rigging at twenty-five miles an hour, and the Thistle, which was to accom pany the two contestants, rolled a great deal in the heavy sea. An interesting race took place be tween the Thistle and the schoon er y. &. Bockwood on the way to the lightship, in which the Bock- tcood apparently showed that the Scotch visitors speed is greatly overestimated. The Bockicood at Romer beacon was a mile and a half behind the Thistle. She gradualty overhauled the foreigner until over the bar both vessels were sailing on even terms. There seemed no question but the This tle was sailed for all she was worth, as her sails were full all the time. The Volunteer crossed the line first and the Mayflower three minutes later. The Volunteer brought out her spinnaker on the line and the Mayflower followed her example a minute before cross ing. The yachts both had main sails, clubsails, . fore staysails, jibs and spinnaker set, and staged off like race horses, with booms to starboard and spinnakers to pott. The Volunteer at 12 o'clock, less than an hour after starting, was a little over a mile ahead of the Mayflower and Tlijstle. The wind at the time was blowing twenty miles an hour and the racers were dashing through and across a choppy sea. In fifteen minutes the Volunteer began gaining steadily on the Mayflower, and the Thistle was fast falling behind. The Volunteer crossed the fin ish line first. The Mayflower was two miles in the rear. Alaska Hews. Victobia, B. C, Sept, 16. Capt. "Warren, whose four schoon-' ers were seized by the revenue cutter HusJij arrived to-night. On the arrival of the iicow at Sitka, Gov. Swineford received orders from "Washington to release mas ter, mates and crew, and to deliv er to them their personal effects. No trial was granted them; after six weeks' detention they were simply told to go. The British schooner Ada and American schoo.ner All I. Algar arrived be fore the Ancon left, having been seized by the steamer Jiear, now in Behring Sea. The seized schooner Grace has been char tered by the American authorities to go to Ounalaska .and bring all the seized skins to Sitka. In all, fifteen British and American schooners have been seized this year. "While the Dear was in the Arc tic sea she found the only survivor of the whaling vessel Napoleon, lost two years ago.. The vessel was crushed among the ice, and the crew took to the boats. Eighteen lived on the ice floes for thirteen days, but all but this one died from exposure. He was picked up and cared for by the Esquimaux until m the arrival of the Bear. The murderer of Archbishop Seghers was brought from St. Michaels by the Bear, and trans ferred to the Bush in Behring sea and brought to Sitka. He will be tried on the second Monday in November. Col. Ball, district attorney of Alaska, died on Tuesday last on board the Ancon while on the way down. Thomas Lowrey, of Minneapolis, has returned from a European tour. He had thirty-two pieces of bag gage. Ten years ago he could have carried all his travelling lug gage in his hand. He is the Min neapolis street car man, and has made millions out of the street franchises. After a sea diet, to prevent boils and assist acclimation, use Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Gov. Foraker of Ohio has a right to be & fighter. He. was in thirteen battles 'before he was nineteen years old. EAUEOAD TALK. Los Angeles, Sept. 16. It was developed here to-dav that Richard Smith, of New York, who bought Rattlesnake Island, is the no-pnt nf Gould, and that the ob ject is to make the island the western coast terminal lor tne Utah Northern railroad. It is understood that this road is to be extended from the present termi nus at Frisco station in Utah to the Pacific coast. The Rapid Transit comnanv is understood to be in the scheme to connect with the proposed extension and ouild a road from the head of San Ga briel canyon to Long beach and Rattlesnake Island. This will give California another overland route. Surveyors are already at work at. San Gabriel canyon. It is said that the Southern Pacific has surveyed for a new road from Campton to Redondo beach, a new seaside resort. Sax Francisco, Sept. 16. Vice president C. "W. Smith, of the At chison, Topeka & Santa Fe, sent a private telegram to a gentleman in this city to-day that he would leave Chicago to-morrow, for Cali fornia, first going to Los Angeles, and then coming to this city, llis trip is one of business, and impor tant developments may be looked for as to the probable route that the Santa Fe will adopt in extend ing its California Central division northward from Los Angeles. Washington Territory Ohart. "Washington, Sept. 16. A no table reconnoisance of that nearly unknown and uninhabitable por tion of "Washington territory lying between Cape Flattery and Gray's Harbor has ju&t been com pleted, and is most satisfactory in all its details. Assistant Gilbert has just finished a similar recon noisance from Tillamook to Ya qu'tna, Oregon. The chart of the inland waters of "Washington ter ritory which was issued about a vear ago has met with such favor able consideration that the issue of 600 copies has already been dis posed of, and a second edition is now being prepared. "Washington', Sept. 16. United States district Judge nallett, ot Colorado, has rendered an impor tant decision, involving the right of a railroad company to cut tim ber from lands adjacent to lines of said road. The judge holds that the right to take timber extends laterally the same distance from the right of way, and it is such lands as may be reached by ordi nary transportation by wagon, and not otherwise. The timber must be used for the construction of the road at or near the place of deliv ery; if elsewhere, the company is liable in trespass for the value. The government is bound to prove that the timber was taken from public lands. Misery After Eatins Is avoided by dyspeptics who, guided by the recorded experience of thousands, becin and systematically pursue a course of Hostettcr's Stomach Bitters. Persistence In the use of this pure atid highly accredited stomachic 13 the sole and agreeable condition of the en tire removal of the obstinate forms of dys pepsia, no less than a temporary fit of Indi gestion. In connection with the use of this specinc.lt is desirable to avoid articles of food which indUidual experience has shown to bo. difficult of digestion, by the stomach sought to be benefited. Each djspeptlc's past observation of his digestive capacity should enable him to be his own guide and mentor In tills particular, not trusting to any set ot dietetic rules too ceneral to be suited to particular cases. Biliousness and consti pation, heartburn, wind upon the stomach, sour eructations, headache and mental de- spouuency are among the concomitants ot dyspepsia, and ve put it to flight by the Bit ters. My life was a misery. 1 had had recommended Simmons Liver Regulator, of which I am now taking the second bottle, and the fact is that words cannot express the relief I feel. My appetite is very good, and I digest everything thoroughly. I sleep well now, and 1 used to be very restless. Tarn flesh ing up fast; good strong food and Simmons Liver Regulator have done it all.
