Blaine's adherents are well satisfied "with the work of the New York repub lican convention yesterday. The Philadelphia fress, edited bv Charles Emory Smith, who is a confidential friend of Blaine, says editerially: 'The New York state republican convention shows the fruit of wise and judicious leader ship and harmonious enthusiasm in its proceedings and its nomina tions. Differences and difficulties of the past have disappeared or been avoided. The party in the state has never sent more of its able men to a convention, and the result promises to be shown in the vote at the polls. The selection of Col. Fred Grant will be widely approved as a graceful tribute to the memory of Grant, the soldier who sleeps on the Hudson, and it gives to the office a man equal to all its demands. Taken as a whole, in its proceedings and con clusions, the convention reflects high credit on its party and gives hope of a bright future." The Commercial Advertiser sharply attacks the Republican platform adopted at yesterday's convention, ft says: "The plat form is so obviouslv a mere drajr net for voters and a carefully de signed evasion of living questions that the adoption of it brings posi tive humiliation to Republicans of sincere mind and earnest purpose." "Won't Oom9 Por Three Years. A letter from Charles Y. Smi ley, chief of the division of rec ords and pnblications, U. S. com mission of fish and fisheries, to James G. Swan, of Port Town send, aissistant to the fish commis sioner, states that there is no rec ord in the department lending to show that the U. S. Fish commis sion steamer Albatross was to be sent to this coast in the interest of the fisheries, and asking Mr. Swan to send any data he might have connected with the affair. Mr. Smiley states that Mr. Swan was the trusted correspondent and agent of the late Professor Baird, former commissioner of fish and fisheries, and requests him to send any information he may have con nected with the business, which will be done at once. Mr. Swan has devoted much time to devel oping the fisheries of this coast, and if a properly equipped vessel is sent here much good will be done and one of the finest indus tries on the coast developed. As it is the Albatross will probably not come on the coast for three year:?.
