c Wit gmtxj gfotfim ASTOKIA. OKEGON: FBIDAY SEPTEMBEli 15. 188T The recent action of tlie land de partment has added the area of a state to the national domain. The amount of railroad indemnity with drawals revoked are equal in extent to the state of Indiana. Dr. AiiPbed, of Ocala, Fla., has a copy of the Baltimore Advertiser and Journal of 1773, in which George Washington advertises 30,000 acres of "the finest and richest land in the world" for sale. Mr. Washington had never seen any of Clatsop county's soil. The United States land office has received new rules to govern the mak ing of entry and proving up of claims on public lands. Under the new rules each settler will have to make affida vit that the land and lumber is not only for his own use, but that he actually resides on the claim. Fourth of July Committee. At a meeting of the Fourth of July committee held in the office of the county clerk last evening there were g resent J. H. D. Gray, president, and . J. Trenchard, secretary: called in T. G. Boelling as witness. (The rest of the committee supposed to be either at railroad meeting or temper ance meeting or elsewhere.) The committee allowed the bills presented since last meeting of the committee according to the judgment of the committee present A statement of receipts and disbursements and all bills are at the office of The Astoman for inspection of any who desire, to see the same. Total collections and re ceipts from all sources.... $1,411.40 Frizes, bills and all expenses 1,341.40 Balance on hand $ 70.00 The treasurer was instructed to place the said balance on interest subject to the use of future 4th of July celebrations in Astoria, and the oommittee adjourned. J. H. D. Grat, Attest: President O. J. Trenohabd, Seoretary. The committee present desire to apologize for the seemingly unneces sary delay in making this roport It was all on account of the powder. Uncle Sam used extra powder for our celebration and the committee had to almost have the same made to order. More About the "Queen of the Bay." AL Zetterman, who came up from the mouth of the Nehalem yesterday, was on board the Queen of the Bay when she went ashore Saturday night, and says they went in on high water, almost inside, but the ebb, though there were no breakers, made a snrge that broke the windlass and then the chain, losing their largest ancher: three others were put out, but they didn't hold, and after sever al endeavors to save her from beach ing she went on the main shore. The cargo was all saved except some salt, sugar and one fish tank. The vessel leaks, is imbedded about two feet in the sand, and while the weather stays fine is in no danger and can be got off. Coming up he ran across five buck elks between Buchanan's place and the mouth of the Necanicum, and says it anyone wants elk hunting ho can get plenty of it in that vicinity. Real Estate Transfers. The Latest Craze. It has caught on in Astoria. If you should observe a red-headed girl on the street and at the same time should see a number of young men rush to the curbstone and gaze ex pectantly up and down the street. you may safely stake your last dollar that those young men have caught on to the latest craze. They are looking for a white horse. The theo ry is that whenever and wherever a girl with red hair appears on the street there is a white horse visible. also. Washington, Sept 15. It is an nounced to-day that the department of state declines to ask for McGari gle's extradition. Secretary Bayard's reason is that he could discover no proper ground upon which to de mand the extradition. Dr. St John, a British subject who planned the escape, is within the jurisdiction of the United States, and should be held answerable, but that does not helpltho extradition of McGarigle. Neither does the British ownership of the vessel upon which McGarigle escaped cut any figure. NEW YORK STOCKS. New Yobk, Sept. 10. The great centennial opened this morning; the day is beaatiful, and the city liter ally thronged with visitors and alive with patriotism. The hotels are crowded to overflowing; a monster civic and industrial pageant started soon after ten o'clock and marched a distance of nearly five miles and then countermarched to the starting point, passing through a continuous line of stands gaily decorated with the flags of all nations. There were in line three hundred floats, each bearing a representation of some particular branch of industry, 12,000 men, 3,000 horses and 150 bands of muBic. Is Consumption Incurable? "Did von evereomnrmci n TCnrnvwrto,, pilot?" I asked, cherishing a sailor's ven eration tor tne indomitablo courago of these Northern sea-dogs. "Did I?" he returned with warmth; "I should think so. "Why only last year, bound for Christiansand, I came here in a dense fog that had lasled nearly all the way across. Knowing I ought to be pretty close ashore, I stopped her engines and blew the whistle; but not a yard ahead could I see, and as night set in, I don't deny, I didn't like it. Suddenly I beard a voice, 'Do you want a pilot, sir?' and, looking over the side, there, sure enough, was a pilot-boat. "Well, the fog was as tnicK as a wan; but no sooner was the fellow on board, than 'Full speed! Star board her helinf and away wo went for the rocks. After steaminc ahoad for about half an hour the roar of the breakers became deafening, and I could see absolutely nothing nothing but the fog. 'Hard a-portP the pilot sang out, and hard a-port it was. Close to us the surf thundered among the rocks; but a moment jaier we were m smooth wuter, and were brought to an anchor as handy as if it had been clear daylight." The captain here walked away a few paces to get a better look at something forward. When returning he added. "Sir. von mav go through the length and breadth of this world, but for hardiness and skill you will not beat tho Norwegian pilot !" This warm encomium recalled a reminis cence of my j-outb, which at tho time mado a vivid impression upon me, and which, though it has absolutely nothing to do with the present visit to Sweden, 1 can not refrain mentioning. Imagine a stormy winter's day, with a pale blue sky, a dark blue turbulent sea, and a ship with close reefed topsails. The gale howled in the rigging, ballooning tho narrow strips of canvas and rap-rapping the running gear against the spars with wearisome monotony. Under our lee, as far as the eyo could" reach, stretched the iron-bound coast of old Norway, where the waves, leaping unceasingly against the black rooks, hurled jets of white foam high into the air. From out among these granite bowlders a small craft ap pears; showing at "first only a spritsail with a red stripe down the middle; but when it draws neprer we can see that the boat is covered with a deck, is broad of beam, clinker-built, and pointed fore and aft shaped, in fact, like a gull. There are but two hands on board. Tho pilot yellow-bearded, broad shouldered, with a sou'wester on his head stands by the mast; his son, a mere lad, has hold of tho tiller. Our ship has been kept close hauled, laboring heavily in tho roifgh sea, and presently tho boat is to wind ward a short distance off. With his hand firmly on the tiller the boy is keenly watching his chance, and the next mo ment runs us dangerously near; then a rope is thrown; is deftly caught by the pilot, who ties it round his waist, nnd the boat again sheers off. There is a mo ment's suspense; a big wave approaches; as it rises it lifts tho small craft on its crest to a level with our rigging; in that instant tho pilot jumps, and lands safely in our mizen shrouds. Tho lad mean while has promptly luffed, nnd alono in his nutshell, now lost to sight, now heaved aloft, he makes his way sturdily towards shore; but on board tho frigate we know that "all's well!" 3fayzf?ic. . i Bucklcn'is Arnica Salve.
