C 3be gaiUj Qtiotim. ASTORIA. OREGON: THUKSDA.yZZZHsEPTMBER 15, 1BS7 WEDDINGS AND TROUSERS. The great -work which the Now York World is doing in the east is a matter o pride and pleasure to jour nalists everywhere. We have long be lieved that what eastern journalism needed most was a transfusion of western blood, and the success of the World under its western manage ment is a striking confirmation of the correctness of that opinion. Not the least among things which the World is doing is that of teaching the east etiquette. Its elucidations of the intricacies and delicacies of the arts of behaving and dressing are logical and clear, and so authoritative have they become that they are universally accepted as conclusive. With such prefatory commendation of its expositions of etiquette in gen eral, we wish particularly to indorse one of its late rulings with reference to the correct costume for bride grooms. In a recent number of our New York contemporary we find this query: "To the Editor of tho World Mr. Car negie wore a gray tweed traveling suit at his wedding. Can I do the same at mine without violating the canons of good taste? It will be a day house wedding, and the bride will wear a traveling dress. I am not a ten-millionaire. It. O. K." To which the World replies: "A bridegroom should always, if possi ble, wear a black frock or at least a cut away coat, and trousers of course." That is as definite as it is concise, and as correct as it is definite. Bridegrooms at day house weddings should always wear dark frock-coats, "and trousers, of course." The World seems to have an impression that there is among its readers at least among those who do not pretend to be sticklers for the extremes of styles an idea that at such a ceremony the groom may omit the trousers, and al though the hot weather may furnish a plausible argument in support of such omission, still it must be con fessed that the World is right in in sisting that a groom is not properly appareled unless his wedding outfit includes a pair of trousers. Out here in Oregon no man would be consid ered fashionably dressed on any pub lic occasion who had neglected to put on a pair of trousers, and although it may be uphill work for the World to impress upon its provincial eastern constituency tho authority of the west to set the fashions, we have faith in the influence of our contemporary to at least secure the general adoption of the custom of trousers-wearing at eastern weddings. And so we lend our voice to the World's in its effort to induce New York bridegrooms to wear trousers at their weddings. Even if it were not a Btrict rule of the present etiquette of the occasion, it would seem that they would take a melancholy pleasure in that article of dress. Honeymoons are brief at best, and no considerate bride is going to insist on wearing the trousers until the end of that happy period. In truth, whether she be con siderate or not, as long as it" is an edict of fashion she will in all proba bility require that the groom wear the empty honor of the trousers at least during the marriage ceremony. m i LrvEBPOoi. as a maritime center may be said to rank foremost among the ports of the world. A day's ship ping record given by a Liverpool journal shows that in thirty-three docks, with their several branches, and the five docks and branches at Birkenhead, across the river, there were 267 vessels. This does not in clude the ships of all kinds, from American liners to coasting schooners, which anchor in the Mersey from ite mouth all the way up to Runcorn. They are not enumerated. On the same day there were 116 ship3 on the ocean bound for Liverpool, Beside ninety-eight homeward bound to re ceive orders on arrival in English wa ters. There are about thirty line3 of steamers running out of Liverpool, of which ten only are for other ports in the United Kingdom. Meat remains dear in the east On the plains the steer is worth from 1 cent to 1 cents a pound the cheap est meat in the world. It should be, with 1,100,000 square miles of free pasturage for cattle ranges. By the time cattle have reached Chicago the price has doubled, and for better fed western cattle risen to from 3 cents to 5 cents. It costs K of a cent a pound to carry cattle to New York, and the price still does not run over 6 cents a pound. Even this is an enormous in crease when it is remembered that wheat, in making the same trip from the west or far west only doubles in price; but this is a mere trifle to the jump that comes when the work of distribution begins. m It must be a very hard-to-suit indi vidual indeed who can't find a politi cal party to his liking this year. Be afei side- the Grand Old Party and its al ways active opponent the Democratic party,, there is the prohibition party, the Henry George party, the socialist party, the union labor part)', the greenback party, the Beu Butler party and now a new Old American party, all of which goes to show that the American people are learning that the salvation of this republic does not depend upon any one political party. An American engineer, who has made the subject a special study on the Bpot, has calculated that the Chinese wall has a contents of 18, 000,000 cubic metres (6,350,000,000 cubic feet). The cubic contents of the great pyramid is only 241,200 metres. The material used in the construction of the Chinese wall would be sufficient to build a wall round the globe 1.8 metro (six feet) high, and 0.6 metre (two feet) thick, The same authority estimates the cost of the Chinese wall to be equal to the railway mileage of the United States (128,000 miles). There seems to be a decided misnnclnr- Btanding concerning tho intention of the postoffico department with reference to me cuanges m tbo sene3 of adhesive stamps. Major Howard, chief of tho stamp division of tho dopartment, says mat me oniy cuange or any land m the detached stamps will be in tho two cent stamp. This is at present metallic red. About the middle of Septombor all those lSouea irom tuo department will be green. The reason for this change is that until the minimum rate of letter postage was reduced to two cents, tho color of tho stamp most generally used, namely, the three cent, was green, and the postolfice officials think that that color gave more Kuuerai tsausiacuon 10 mo puuuc man any other. It was tho intention of tho department to make numerous other changes in the colora of adhesive stamps at the same time that the change in the two cent variety is to go into effect, but it was found that the contractors have a large supply of tho current series on hand, and if the colors are ordered changed at once it will entail a serious loss upon them. For this reason the changes contemplated will bo ordered as fast as tho supply of each denomination is exhausted. The following changes in the impressed stamps on stamped envelopes have been ordered to go into effect as soon as the contractors can get the stock ready: PUSSENX COTjOB. 1-cent Light blue 2-cent Bed 4-cent Green 5-cent Brown 10-cent Chocolate 30-cent Black 90-cent Carmine NEW COLOR. Light blue Green Carmine Dark blue Chocolate Brown Purple There will bo some slight changes in the designs of the 1, 2, 4 and 5 cent im pressed stamps, but tbo only radical ohange will bo in the 5 cent stamp. In this case tho adhesive stamp will portray tho hoad of Garfield, whilo tho impressed stamp on the 5 cent envelope will bear a likeness ot urant. One of the reasons which led to tho de termination to change the series is the friendly rivalry now existing among all nations by which each is trying to put out tho most handsome series of postage stamps. Then, too, it was found that the colors now in use in the adhesive vane- ties could not bo reproduced with very good effect on tho envelopes, as the inks used nave a different effect on tho pe culiar paper used for tho stamps than upon tho heavier paper of the envelopes. It is the intention of tho department to ultimately make tho two kinds of stamps as nearly identical as possible. BucklcrTs Arnica Salve.
