The Nevada City Transcript says that about three years ago the matches kept in a tin box at G. M. Hughes' planing mill disap peared so rapidly that some per son around the establishment might have been suspected of filching them, had it not been known that all the employes vreFe strictly honest. Long afterward some changes were made in the building, and on tearing downa wall, there came to light a quanti ty of matches with the heads gone, the latter having been, apparently, eaten off by rats. Many dead rats were found in the same place, giv ing proof of the correctness of the theory that the rodents had stolen the matches and devoured the sul phur upon them. One bunch of matches nau been ignited wnue being chewed, but had only par tially burned. Moral Keep your matches where rats can't get hold of them. A builder in Newburg, N. Y., who is tearing down a building to make room for a new one, has contrived a grinding machine, into which he feeds the old brick and mortar, and it is ground into pow der, or rather into building sand and cement, and the material will be used in setting brick in the new building. Leo XIII. is one of the most re tiring of Popes. He is rarely seen in his reception robes; still more difficult is it to observe him in his house dress. He sits constant ly before his enormous artistic ally carved writing desk, hidden behind piles of books, diplomatic letters, and newspapers. There is a colored baby seven weeks old at Little Rock, Ark., which talks quite plainly, and has done so since three days old. It is the youngest of twelve children, and people come a long distance to see it. Tho Arkansas medical college will investigate the sub ject. Another level headed druggist sold harmless colored water for vitriol in Paris the other day to an excited womau, who immediately proceeded to throw the innocuous liquid in the faces of two persons whom she desired to destroy. San Francisco, it is said, is to have a statue of Liberty overlook ing her harbor. It is to be but forty feet in height, pedestal and all, but it is to be placed, by way of recompense, on ground nearly a thousand feet above the level of the sea. There is a watch in a Swiss mu seum only three-sixteenths of an inch in diameter, inserted in the top of a pencil case. Its little dial indicates not only hours, minutes and seconds, but also da's of the month. Queen Victoria makes the curious rule, and adheres to it strictly, not to permit any lady at court who has been divorced. In this country they get divorced so that they can court again. There are twenty persons whose gifts to colleges in this country ag gregate over $23,000,000. Three of these Stephen Girard, John Hopkins and Asa Packer gave over $14,000,000. An article is printed on "How to Treat Your "Wife." One good way would be to treat her as well as you did before you married her, but few married men do that. Boat Building.
