The Prison Mirror is the tide of" a paper edited, printed, pub lished and sold by the convicts in the Stillwater, Minn., penitentiary. It curiously beare the motto, "God Helps Those Who Help Them selves," and among the list of stockholders we find the names of Robert, James and Coleman Younger, the celebrated Younger brothers, who owe their presence in the institution to a habit of "helping themselves," which was not sanctioned hy divine aid. "Cole" Younger also appears to be the librarian of the prison and the printer's devil of the Mirror office. The salutitory announces that the paper's mission is "to en courage prison literary talent, and to instruct, assist, encourage and entertain all, those within our midst, and to scatter words of warning upon the unwary pathway of those in the outside world whose reckless footsteps may be leading them liitherward." "We are not so sure about encouraging "prison tal ent," but the rest of the editors' intentions are praiseworthy, as is also their endeavor "to bury mel ancholy, estrangement and enmity in the vast region of the past, and to sow in the hearts of our readers tho golden seeds of charity, hope and love." Their effort has met with flattering success, and the Mirror starts in under the most favorable auspices. There is a hint of humor in the invitation ex tended to president Cleveland to visit its "retired community," and the regret that the invitation could not be conveyed by a committee. When a man comes into the of fice and planks down the cash, aud says "send me your paper for a 3'ear" that means business. When one says, "I want your paper but haven't got the money now," that's all right. When he takes it out of the postoffice for sev eral months and sends it back "refused," that's meanness. When a man spends from ten cents to a dollar for .cigars or beer every week, and says he can't afford to take his home paper, that's a no such thing. When a man bor rows his neighbor's paper to read every week, that's cheek. JtJx. What does Roscoe Conkling can for politics when at his age he can swim for two hours, in the salt sea waves without tiring? A man who was in a commanding polit ical position for twenty years, came out poor, went quietly to work at his profession, manages to make a quarter of a million a year, can knock out any man of his weight with soft gloves and can swim for two hours, is in need of nothing that politics can give him. It is a remarkable- case ol a sound mind in a sound body. Cincinnati Republican. The results of the survey and last census of India are that the area of the peninsula of Hindustan is l,co2,624 square miles, and the population 253,891,821. Although immense tracts of country are an nually cultivated, according to the most recent survey 10,000,000 acres of land, suitable for culti vation, have not as yet been plowed. At the same time 120, 000,000 acres are returned as waste land. Dr. Torsey of Boston marries a pair in eighty seconds. There are many young persons would like to make a minute of this. T hftvn reneatedlv said that we can raise and pick blackberries at a cost oi ivvo ceuu a. puuuu, uuu in fact, think it can be done for less. We can surely raise two tons to the acre, and I think at four cents, or a Drofit of 80 an acre, these berries can either be canned at a profit or sold to canners in practically unlimited quantities. So we see there are other crops besides hoDS that will pay as a special crop. Stewart, at Puyal- lup, raised over two tons ot rasp berries to the acre, and I see no reason'why we may not raise even more of currants and as many gooseberries as either of the two mentioned. Ezra Meeker. The largest 3-masted schooner ever built in Connecticut, and the largest 3-master now on the At lantic coast, was launched on Sat urday week in West Haven. Her dimensions are as follews: Length of keel, 170, feet; length on deck, 200 feet; depth of hold, 18 feet, 2 inches; width, 37 feet; length from end of spanker-boom to end of jib-boom, 270 feet. OldJJim Baker, up on Snake river, gives notice to hunters thus: "If any one should kill an elk this winter with a circle B on it, this is to notify them that that crit ter is mine, and is only half elk anyway, as the other half is cow, being the calf -of my old milker Cherokee, and got by a wild bull." "Blaine walks the clouds," said an Indiana congressman, "and there's no telling where or when he'll come down. He's :t terror to John Sherman in the west. The Republican candidate for vice president is likely to come from our state Ben Harrison, probably." In the "Whole Hideous Catalogne Of diseases, there were none which, previ ous to the discovery of'Hostetter'a Stomach Bitters, offered more formidable resistance to the old fashioned modes of treatment than the group of maladies which, under the collective name or malarial disease, afflicted the entire communities that suffered hope lessly. Chills and fever, dumb ajrue, ague cake and bilious remittent were once re garded as well nigh Incurable. Now It re joices the hearts of thousands who reside in districts periodically subject to the visit ation of malaria, to feel certain that in the Hitters they possess a certain defense against tue scourge, a sure means of expelling its poison from the system. To the settler In the far West, the new emigrant thither, and to travelers and tourists by land and sea, the possession ot this pleasant safeguard Is a guarantv of safety from diseases which they might vainly seek from any other source. Nature is bound to keep up the average; when she makes a man who can accumulate a fortune, she usually produces a family of spend thrifts to squander it. Whitehall Times.
