The Boss Snake Story of the Season.
In central Dakota, on the "Mis
souri bottoms," there exists one of
nature's strangest freaks. The
settlers term it the "pump snake."
How it came there and where it
came from is yet unknown. It
first made its appearance in Em
mons county injhe spring of 1886.
A full grown 'plxmp snake meas
ures about sixteen feet in length
and about three inches in diameter.
They are of gregarious habits,
roaming the prairies in large herds,
as many as three hundred having
been counted -in a single flock.
In di ecting one of these reptiles
there is found a tube which ex
tends from the roof of the jaw
to the extremity of the tail and
terminating in an opening. This
tube is about two inches in diam
eter and lined with a a tough,
yielding substance similar to rub
ber, The pump snake is easily
trained to answer the call of jnan.
The inhabitants in this section
trap them in large numbers.
A farmer at Cat Tail creek has
a flock of twenty pump snakes
trained to a remarkable degree of
proficiency. At the blast of a
whistle the snakes assemble on
the banks of the creek. The
leader (there is always a leader to
a herd of these snakes, who is
elected by a two-thirds majority)
dashes into the water of the creek,
leaving only the extremity of its
tail on the bank. Another snake
immediately grasps the end of the
leader's tail in his jaws, a th'rd
takes hold of the second snake's
tail in a similar manner, and so on,
extending to the water troughs in
the cattle yards 30 feet away.
The leading snake begiqs to swal
jowbr pump the water of the creek,
which passes through the long
line of snakes as it would through
a hose, and falls in a heavy stream
into the trough.
The agriculturist told of an ex
traordinary circumstance which
occurred a short time ago. While
-working in a field near his home,
he observed flames issuing from
the roof of his barn. Wild with
excitement he hurried to the burn
ing building, only to see that it
was a hopeless task for himself
alone to attempt to extinguish the
flames. In despair he gazed on
the work of destruction. Suddnt
ly he heard a loud rustling in the
tall grass, whence issued his herd
of pump snakes on the run. The
leader hurled himself into the
creek, the rest instantly adjnsting
themselves, heads and tails, from
the creek to the burning building.
The last snake standing on its
head, waved its long and flexible
body, from the tail of which is
sued a stream of water that was
thrown with terrific force on the
burning building. Back and forth
dashed the tail end of the Jiving
hose, squirting the water where it
would do the most good, while
the loud pumping of the leader
could be heard above the roar of
the conflagration. Within fifteen
minutes 'the last spark was out.
Then, and not till then, did the
pump snakes quit work. They
were completely exuaustea, tne
leader having fainted dead away.
The main part of the building and
its contents were saved, thanks to
the presence of mind of these won
derful snakes.
The territorial government is
becoming awakened to the extreme
usefulness of these interesting
creatures, and laws are to be en
acted to protect the pump snake.
Big Sale of Eailroad Lands
San Francisco, Sept. 7. There
is no abatement in the demand for
cheap land for agricultural pur
poses within the grants of the
Central Pacific, Southern Pacific
and California and Oregon lines.
During August land agent Mills
sold 23,608 acres, chiefly on the
California and Oregon line. One
sale in Shasta county, some twenty-five
miles east of Redding,
comprised 16,000 acres. The pur
chasers are formed in a syndicate
headed by George W. Meade, of
this city. The land will be col
onized, and about all the other
land sold has been for settlement
and cultivation. In six days of
thif month land agent Madden
sold 1,201,276 acres in the South
ern Pacific grant. Over 3,500
acres "were sold yesterday.
The Chicago Anarchists.
Chicago, Sept. 7. Capt. Black,
one of the attorneys for the anar
chists, had a long talk with his
clients at the jail. He assured
Spies, Parsons, et al., that there
would be no opinion rendered in
their cases for at least two or
three weeks. He thought their
enemies desired to. see it early.
The opinion wpuld be favorable to
the anarchists, and would grant
them a new trial. Taking the
worst view of it, Capt. Black in
sisted that Done of them would
ever be hanged.
Nothwithstanding Capt. Black's
hopeful view in regard to the out
come of the anarchists' case, the
sheriff and state authorities seem
to take a different view for
every precaution is being taken
to prevent any one from visiting
the jail who is not called there on
business. An extra force of
bailiffs and officers do duty at
night, and a number are kept as
reserve in the grand jury room of
the criminal court building, for
duty in case of emergency.
The Herald claims to have in
formation directly from the de
tective department of the city po
lice that serious trouble, in case of
an adverse decision by the
supreme court, is expected, and
preparations on a large scale are
heing made to meet it. An
official interviewed said that at
least 150 "reds" are being shad
owed, and Judge Gary's resi
dence, as well as that of the jury
men who condemned the anarch
ists, are closely watched. The
four principal witnesses for the
slate are receiving police protec
tion at their own request. State's
attorn' Gnnnell's house is also
well guarded. The official inti
mated that one of the most des
perate "reds" who rebided on Rice
street had held a secret council
with four of the most trustworthy
of the "inner circle," but a few
days since, and each attendant
upon that secret meeting was just
now an object of special attention.
In the Whole Hideous Catalogue
Of diseases, there were none which, previ
