Walker, supervisor road district No. 7, Tho affair ocenrred about half past five o'clock in the morning; thetesti mony as to the facts being very con flicting. The wounded man was shot in the left lowdr cheek by a 33 cali ber ball, which passed through his tongue and lodged on tho right side of the neck, close to tho carotid artery. Surgical aid was summoned and later in the day the ball was ex tracted, Dr. J. A. Fulton performing the operation. Sheriff Boss arrested A. M. Twombly and he was given a preliminary hearing before Justice Cleveland, who held him in sum of $1,000 bail to appear at tenthiB morning. Last evening the wounded man's tongue was considerably swol len and the doctors in attendance were not positive as to the probable result of the case. Before the justice of the pefice "Dr. Fulton testified that the bones of tho jaw were not liable to unite and blood poisoning would set in. Dr. Baker testified at to the direc tion of the ball, and his belief that the wound was a dangerous one. Several witnesses were sworn and considerable testimony taken. It appears that the parties had had some difficulty and hard words the night before, and upon meeting in the morning tho trouble was renewed. Some of the witnesses yesterday tes tified that they saw no pistol in Walker's haud, one testifying that ho did. The examination of witnesses will be renewed this morning. At pres ent there are no express offices over there and it is suggested with greajt propriety that if the Pacific Express company neglects or refuses to place offices at Oysterville, Montesano, and elsewhere, that we organize a local express company. The fire alarm bell rang loudly at ten o'clock last night, and a glare in the eastern sky showed that a blaz ing fire was burning in the extreme eastern part of the city. The entire department turned out. When Ones got as far as OBnens hotel chief Worsley ordered them to stop. Twos and Hooks went on. The fire was just beyond the city limits. About 75 feet east of Sam Olsen's saloon stood an old house. In this the fire started. W. B. Adair thinks the fire started from the flue. This building was entirely destroyed. Los3, $150; uninsured. The fire then spread to a dwelling house owned and ocenpied by M. Dominico. He saved considerable, of his furniture, but the house was a total loss. -Twos and Hooks had to pass through a pretty hard scorching to get posi tion, and the engine being stationed at Booth's cannery, after a little unavoidable delay in getting water, the boys did good work in preventing the spread of the flames to S. D. Adair's outhouses and residence. Great chunks of burning cinders flew through the air, and nothing but the most strenuous exertions pre vented a widespread conflagration. Hooks fought well, and Messrs. George, Barker, Cook, Chutter, and others on the roofs aided in prevent ing the spread of the flames, the ap ple trees also helping matters. The firo was finally stopped after burning along the fence some distance. It is a long pull up there and the boys think that when they get so far they ought at least have some help' from the crowds of bystanders to man the ropes. There were two casualties. CSe breoke hurt his hand in trying to break in the door of the -first burning building. Adolph Johnson met with a serious accident, falling from a roof across a fiarrel and breaking his breastbone and tho cartilage of two of the ribs and bruising his thigh. He is particularly unlucky, having just recovered from a broken rm, and was going to work this morning. Domiuico's dwelling was worth about $600, f nlly insured in J. O. Bozorth's agency.
