CJ mt gattg fytetim. ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY ..SEPTEMBER 7, 1S87 THE PROPOSED SUBSIDY. A committee has been selected by the chairman of the chamber of com merce to take into consideration the best means to raise the 8150,000 sub sidy. Positive assurance is made by railroad men in San Francisco that if that much money is raised and suita ble grounds donated for depot, round houses, machine shops, etc, that the road -will be built inside of a year. A year seems too shert: the language of the resolution adopted by the cham ber of commerce last Monday night says eighteen months, which is more reasonable. With this as a tangible basis there need be but little difficulty in raising the required amount. It is not a gift Not a cent of it is required or expected till the" road is completed. The question is not "How much will my neighbor give?" It is "How much will the road benefit me?" and give accordingly. This is a selfish, view, 'tis true, but pocket interests largely govern in these affairs. If a man is benefited 85,000 by the road coming here he can well afford to give one of those thousands to the project that is going to benefit him five times the amount especially if he won't or can't make that 85,000 any easier way. The beginning of the road would be the beginning of the enhancement of value; not till the road, was fin ished would the money contributed be expected. . The Astobian favors and encour ages this with more force than two or three other plans formerly proposed, because it comes with greater posi tiveness and precision than its pre decessors. The committee consists of the fol lowing gentlemen: Geo. Flavel, Jno. A. Devlin, C. "SV. Fulton, Jas. -Taylor, L W. Case, C. H. Page, J. O. Han thorn, B. Van Dusen, "W. AV. Parker, J. W. Welch, J. C. Trullinger, Jno. F. McGovern, C. W. Shively, D. IL War ren, A. H. Stone. They are requested to meet at the rooms of the chamber of commerce at 7:30 this evening to organize. m FILLING A WANT. r When the"Northern Pacific Express company supplanted Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express company, that company withdrew from Pacific county, W. T., in common with other points in this vicinity. The .Northern Pacific peo ple put on no express pouches into Pacific county, greatly to' the incon Tenience of Pacific county and As toria. -Now in the mutations of rail road management the Northern Pa cific Express company has, in turn, given way to its successor, the Pa cific Express company, which has been put by the Union Pacific rail road company on its leased lines. ThuB far it has not taken any steps toward doing express business in Pa cific or Chehalis counties, and, it appears, does not propose to take any. It is in the line oHrasiness to direct the attention of the company to this matter for it is one of importance to Astoria. Our banks and merchants have daily business with Hwaco, Oysterville, Shoalwater Bay, Monte sano, and Gray's Harbor. The. oys ters, lumber, etc., in that region make business, and Astoria is the principal place of business for that region. If the Pacific express company doesn't care 6r choose to establish -offices or tend to the business, it may be that a local express company incorporated here and owned and operated by Clat sop, Pacific and Chehalis county busi ness men would be in order. The state board of immigration has suspended for want of funds. It was created by the legislature of 1885, which provided funds for two years, but the legislature which met last January made no further appropria tion. It never did this part of the state much service, but it helped the state in general as any institution of the kind is sure to do, no matter how it is managed, and it is not in the line of progress to abandon such an enter prise just as it had got fairly started. It is but fair to say that nothing but the private subscriptions of Portland merchants kept it alive for the last six months of its existence. Bobert T. Lincoln, an estimable resident of Chicago, "is quoted in the Toledo Blade as saying that he does not want the presidency of the United States. You should recollect, Bobert, that it is manners to wait to be asked. A Gift fer All. c In order to give all a chance to tett it, and thus be convinced of its wonderful curative powers, Dr. King's New Dis covery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds, will be, for a limited time, given away. This offer is not only liberal, but shows unbounded faith in the mer its of Uiis great remedy.- All who suf fer from Coughs, Colds, Consumption, Asthma. Bronchitis, or any affection of Throat, Chest, or Lungs, are especially requested to call at W. E. Dement & Cos Drug Store, and get a Trial Bottle Free, Large Bottles Si, They Should Come to Astorisi San Fbancisoo, September 5. J. E. Shephard, local agent of the North ern Pacific Bailroad company, re turned to the city last night from a week's visit advertising the company in Southern. California. He stated to a Postal Press representative this af ternoon that he met many eastern tourists while south, a large number of whom signified their intention of coming north and observing the re sources of Oregon and Washington territory and proceed homeward over the Northern-Pacific "It's somewhat surprising," continued Mr. Shephard, "but nevertheless it is true that an exodus of real estate men is about to take place from Los Angeles and other cities in the original boom coun try. You see, the boomers' edge is kind of dull at the present time down there and these men are 'going to sharpen a new one in the north. Why, fifteen men who made fortunes in tne real estate business in Pasade na came up with me last night and at the end of this week or the beginning of next they will take in Portland, Seattle and other northern cities, do some booming and then visit Yellow stone National Park. Eastern people who come to Southern California nowadays I find are not satisfied un til they also have a look at the north ern country as well." Some "Who Jumped On Him When He "Was Down. New York, Sept 5. It seems to be the general impression here that Yil lard's acquisition of Oregon railway stock will result in nothing more than his election as a director of the Ore gon companies. Others say that Yil lard will succeed Elijah Smith as president of the Oregon Transconti nental.
