VA JDU8EX. Ageur. ASTORIA, OREGON. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, J 887. A TEEBIBLE HOLOCAUST. London, Sept. 5. A -theater at Exeter took fire this evening, during the performance of "Ro many Rye." The occupants of the pit, in an awful struggle, es caped, but mfiny of them were greatly injured. There was only one exit from the gallery, and the crush there was terrific. Scores were" trodden underfoot and suf focated. A fire escape was brought to a window, and many inside were rescued. Sixty corpses have been removed. The mortalitv has been estimated at 100. The fire blazed fiercely, light ing up the whole city. People were soon flocking to the scene in thousands, inquiring for friends. The scene inside the theater when the fire broke out was an awful one. Some men implored ths audience to be calm, but it was impossible to check the fran tic rush. The the theater hose was brought into play in a few minutes, but water had little effect on the flame. The actors and actresses were taken from the windows, with the aid of the ladders. They lout everthing except what they wore at the time. Up to the present time 130 bodies have been recovered. They are almost unrecognisable. Thir ty injured survivors have been taken to the hospitals. The firo burned throughout the night. The search for bodies proceeds slowly. In many case every shred of clothing is burned off and the bodies look black and raw. There are various reports as to the origin of the fire. It is only certain that flames broke out in the scene shifter's department. Those" who escaped say that the special exit was properly opened. The fire brigade arrived five min utes after the breaking out of the flames, but the efforts of the fire men were without effect. There were several thrilling rescues. A majority of the victims were men and boys. About thirty women were burned. "When the fire started the drop soene was lowered to prevent draughts. Some of the actors opened a door to escape, causing fire to burst through the drop scone and to ignite the gallery. The flames overtook the people, who were wedged in an immova ble mass, and roasted them to death. Many who were resoued alive died 60on after being brought out of the burning build ing. Tho occupants of the dress oirole escaped without serious harm. UNDER CONTROL. Sept. 6. A tclgram from Exo ter at 5 o'clock this morning says that the fire is under control. The people, distracted with anxiety, are standing about the streets in the neighborhood of the theater, in search of friends who attended last night's per formance. The hospitals are be sieged by anxious inquiries for friends. Twenty badly burned persons who were admitted to the hospital died a few minutes after they were received. London, Sept. G. The struc ture burned was the Theatre Royal. It was built after the latest designs, and was elaborate ly finished, being considered one of the prettiest in the kingdom. There was a full house to-night, and everything was all right until the end of the third act at half- past ten, when the drop scene fell, and in a moment the, whole stage was a mass of fire. A wild panio ensued. The occupants of stall, pit and dress circle es caped, after a dreadful crushing, many being badly bruised. The actors and actresses were in their rooms when tho fire began, and all escaped. The fire originated in the flues, and spread rapidlj, filling the theater with dense smoke. The occupants of the upper circle and galleries rushed to the windows, screaming frantic ally. Many jumped from the win dows and were injured. Others were resoued with the aid of lad ders from the verandas.
