Hustler left New York city January 7th, 1819, and has not been back since. There are several little bits of business that may occupy his attention during his absence, one' be ing the establishing his just claim to half of an 80,000 sale of property in that city some time ago, of which he was one of the heirs. Mrs. Busey .wishes to thank her many friends on Young's and Walluski rivers for the unvarying kindness she has met with during the five terms she has taught in No. 12. Mr. Piatt, of the U. S. coast and ge odetic survey, has been engaged for the last two weeks in compiling data for a new map of the harbor and city water front, the first map made by this branch of the department in thia place since lobs, lie has now about completed his work. Yesterday after noon he was engaged in setting differ ent tide marks to be used as datum planes for future reference. One is on the Odd Fellows' building, one on the northeastern corner of the custom heuse: one on the northwestern cor ner of the jail foundatien: one impor tant one is located a few feet inside the jail yard, near the sheriff's office, and consists of a large rock sunk about two feet below the surface, in which is firmly clamped a copper bolt with a broad head, on which is engraved "TJ. S. C. & G. S., Bench Tide Mark, 1887." - Late Thursday night a report was in circulation in Portland that a row had occurred on the U. S. lighthouse tender Manzanita. A reporter of the Oregonian looked up E.T. Peake, the chief engineer of the Manzanita, and obtained the following statement from him: "The trouble was origin ally brought about by a question as to the wages of myself and W. S. Mudge, . first assistant engineer. Wednesday night being the last day of themonth at quitting time the en gineer's crew, including myself and Mr. Mudge, left the render. In spector Sebree and myself have had some personal differences, but this had nothing to do with the present -quarrel. The tender has been short of a .man for hvo months, or since Capt Gregory left last April. Since then thetirst officer, Mr. Bichardson, has run her. Isuppose all of the en gineer's crew will go back to-morrow except myself." Cougars are becoming very bold and numerous in the Nehalem valley, so much so that it is hardly safe for children to be put without the pro tection of older persons. On Tues day evening, says the Mist, two boys, sons of Alex. McCauley and Sirs. Geo. Stoddard, were hunting up the cows,, accompanied by a dog, when a cougar sprang from the brush near the roadside, seized the dog in his month, and made off with it The boys say that the dog had only time for a couple of yelps before it disap peared. Recently a cougar visited the store of E. F. 6overign, near the junction of the lower Nehalem and Clatskanie road, in broad daylight, looked in at the door, and turned around and walked away. There were several people in the store at the time, but as they had no weapon, they were compelled to allow the ani mal to make its escape. The county already offers a bounty for cougar scalps, but as they are dangerous to human life as well as destructive of stock, it might be well to raise it to 810. t B. B. Meriwether, an agent of the Interior department has been over hauling the records in the county clerk's office- for the last two days. His object is to find the number of divorces granted in Clatsop county from Jane 30, 1867, to July 1, 1887, a period of twenty years. This work is done under an appropriation made last year for collection of statistics under the head of "vTJabor Department" Mr. M. is compiling theso statistics in every county in Oregon and Wash ington. Other agents are similarly employed in every county in every state and territory in the Union making a work of great magnitued. He and his colleagues make a record of the number of divorces, when and where the parties were married, how long they lived together, how many children, who filed the request for di vorce, the alleged cause, etc The number of divorces granted for twen ty years in Multnomah county was 817; in Clatsop county for the same period, 96. He also compiled a list of the marriages in this county for the past twenty years, and found the number to be just 800. So that the divorces constitute twelve per cent, of the marriages. Mr. M. thinks thip is a better showing than the average. Mr. Meriwether leaves for Portland and The Dalles this morning. Unnecessary Misery. Probably as much misery comes from habitual constipation as from any derangement of the functions of the body, and it is difficult to cure, for the reason that no one likes" to take the medicines usually pre scribed.
