Cancelled the Engagement London, Aug. 31. The state ment appears that Healy, in con sequence of the proclamation of the league, has cancelled his lec turing engagement in America. He was offered 10,000, and- all expenses, and a share of the prof its, but he prefers to stay and take the chance of arrest and impris onment. Threats already have been heard in the house of com mons that O'Brien's conviction, if obtained, will be followed by numerous challenges to the gov ernment. The Irish idea is to make the policy of suppressing the league odious by compelling the lord-lieutenant to arrest a large number of members of par liament, thirty or forty, who are said to be ready for martyrdom. Some English candidates are also prepared to .volunteer, but not manv. Didn't Go. Victoria, Aug. 31. The seal ing schooner Alfred Adams ar rived this evening from Behring sea. She was boarded by the of ficers of the revenue cutter Hush. The ship's papers, 1,386 skins, guns, ammunition and spears were taken aboard the cutter, and the captain ordered her to proceed to Sitka. The captain headed in that direction until the cutter disappeared; then he turne'd and came to Victoria. It is not known what action the owners will take, as the schooner is not entered at the customs house yet. Shipping Wheat in Bulk. Wheat is never shipped in bulk, but always in bags, as when load ed in bulk it is about the most dangerous cargo a ship can carry. No matter how lightly it may bo packed at first, it settles consider ably within a short time, and then is very liable to shift. "When shifting takes place a ship is as good as lost, as a change in the center of gravity throws her on her beam ends, and she is near ly certain to go to the bottom in the first moderate gale. Many ships were lost in this way, and now the shipment of grain in bulk is prohibited by law. "Have you seen my beautiful yacht?" "Have I seen your beau tiful whacht?" "Beautiful yacht."
