ASTORIA. OREGON:
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 16ST
Whex a "combine" fails to be a
success it is called a "subside." It is
in this -way that our language grows.
The proliibitionist organ, the Voice,
ascribes the defeat in Texas to Jeff
Davis, the negroes and the foreigners.
This redskin, Colorow, is a match
for any sheriff or governor. He needs
Gen. Miles after him with that 31,000
sword.
Sam Jokes is particularly down on
the reporters. They told how much
he was making on his eccentric relig
ious stumping tour.
The Harney Valley Times thinks
that about 90 per cent of the lands in
that region claimed as swamp, will be
declared dry by the government and
state agents.
The San Francisco Alta thinks that
"a few ' inexpensive fish ladders" in
California streams will restore the
salmon run in the waters of that state.
A wholesale destruction of the seals at
the gate would greatly aid in that
matter.
PoBTiA3ra is going to work in earn
est to raise money to dredge at St.
Helens, Walker's Island, and else-
wnere, realizing tnat "if you want a
thing done, do it yourself." Portland
has been trying to keep a channel
open for several years in this way.
John Swinton is likely to receive
the nomination for secretary of state
of New York from the socialists, and
a lively campaign is expected, for
Swinton lays many of his grievances
at the door of Henry George, who
has been nominated for the same po
sition by the united labor party.
William A. Atkins, of Province
town, is in control of the ambergris
trade of this country. He is the
owner of a fleet of whalers. During
the last few years these vessels have
Beoured a large percentage of the am
bergris "which has been brought to
market As good ambergris is worth
more per ounce than gold, Mr. Atkins
has enjoyed a neat little monopoly.
The New Orleans Picayune (Dem.)
thinks that the net result of the
elctions this year is to increase the
.number of doubtful states. It con
cedes that the Democrats have lost
ground in Virginia, North Carolina,
Kentucky, Indiana and New Jersey,
and names Massachusetts and Rhode
Island as states in which tlfe Eepubli-
cans have been similarly unfortunate.
The big wheat gamble in Califor
nia has resulted in a loss of $7,000,
000. The general belief is that Eosen
feld and Dresbach were only agents
fof. the Nevada bank. The deal
kelped Oregon farmers in the in
creased price for wheat, hurt Ore
gon's commerce in the matter of ship
ment, and demonstrated the folly of
maintaining such a gambling game
as the San Francisco call board.
The fire loss in the United States
and Canada during July, according to
the New York Daily Commercial
Bulletin, was 14,026,500, against
$10,000,000, in July, 1886, or just
double the average loss of the same
month during the past twelve years,
and makes the total fire waste for the
first seven months of the present year
foot up $76,918,100, an increase of
$13,048,100, in comparison with that
of the corresponding period of 1886.
Sometime ago the Portland city
council proposed to put in some new
water mains and advertised all over for
bids for pipe, lead, gates, etc Af
ter several bids had been receive d
and considered, and rejected, at an
adjourned meeting, a bid was accept
ed from the Oregon Iron & Steel Co.,
to furnish the 2,000 tons of various
sized pipe called for, at $42.50 a ton.
So the money will be kept in the
state and the Oswego works will re
sume operations.
There is nothing more injurious to
children who are growing than to be
hurried. Let them develop slowly
and steadily, and they will be strong
er in nerve and mind. The most en
during trees are those of slow growth.
It is better to keep a child back in
school rather than push him forward.
Nervous diseasas of the most obsti
nate and subtle type, which affect the
whole life of the individual, are some
times brought on by injudicious forc
ing of the child. If the child seems
given to day dreams, let him be. His
day dreams may be only the means
by which ho will gain a higher life
which no man or woman can gain
until he has become conscious "of a
certain stillness that pervades the
universe like a law, ever being broken
by the cries of eager men, yet ever
closing and returning with a gentle
ness not to be repelled, seeking to un
fold and penetrate with its own
healing the minds of the noisy chil
dren of earth."
Henry Clews, the well-known
banker and broker in New York, has
in course of publication a book bear
ing the title, "Twenty Years in Wall
otreeu" jio is strucK wmi me
enormous growth of New York as a
city and as a state, and of the United
States as a nation, and when he looks
back to what New York was twenty,
ten, or even eight years ago, compares
it with what it has now become, its
magnificent buildings towering to the
skies, its over-increasing commerce
and the wonderful inventions by
which its business has been f acilitatod,
and almost instant communica
tion is had, not only with all
parts of the United States, but with
all important points on the habitable
globe,he arrives at the conclusion that,
in this age of electricity, of auda
cious engineering and of mechanical
science, we are only just entering
upon an era of development that will
make the present time a merely pale
shadow of the grander developments
in the future. "A hundred years
hence," ho says, "the people who
then occupy our places will look
upon us as primitive and crude, or, in
accordance with the Darwinian theory,
as the monkeys from which their per
fected race has been developed."
The new rifle with which the the
French infantry will soon bo supplied
is, according to all accounts, a won
der. It is known by the name of its
inventor, Lebel, and -is smaller and
lighter than the lilies now in use; the
French soldiers call it "the little gun."
The most authentic descriptions giv
en to the gun agree in attributing to
it a carrying power beyond that of
any rifle heretofore in use. The gun
has been received in New York and
carefully examined there; but exper
iments with it are impossible, owing
to the fact that the powder used is a
compound of which the French gov
ernment alone has the secret Ac
cording to all accounts the gun will
carry its bullet more than a mile and
a half, and with a more certain aim
than has been possible with ordinary
rifles. The bore of the gun is very
small, and the ball, which is of
steel and sharply pointed at one
end, is said to revolve at a
speed of a thousand revolutions a
second. In the tests made by the
French government this bullet is
said to have penetrated a brick wall
eight inches thick at a distance of
500 yards. At a distance of more
than a mile it will pass through a
man as easily as at ten paces. The
gun has no recoil under fire, and
the powder gives out no smoke what
ever The Lebel gun is, of course, a
repeater, and the cartridges 'are so
small that each soldier carries 220
rounds, of ammunition as against 116
rounds formerly considered the maxi
mum. The French government is
now making these guns at the rate of
500 a day, and is preparing to turn
out double that number.
