AK INSTANCE.
The best answer that can be
made to inquiries about the coun
try and the opportunities which it
now offers to newcomers is to
show what has been and is being
done here by people of the immi
grant class. "We have in par
ticular view the case of a family
from Ohio, father, mother and
three children, among the arrivals
in 1SS1. The father was from a
forest country, familiar with work
in the woods, and quite naturally
he sought a location in the tim
ber. He settled upon a home
stead claim of 160 acres in Colum
bia county, five miles from the
river, and adjacent to a creek of
considerable size.
The cost of finding the location,
making entry in the land office,
getting the family on the place,
etc., was nearly 100, or about
half of his whole capital. At a
cost of less than S20 for hired
help a log house of three rooms
and a rough shed were built and
the rest of the little hoard was
spent for a cooking stove, do
mestic tools, provisions, etc. Bed
ding was part of the baggage
brought from the old home, and
there was no need to buv. The
settlement was made in August,
and as soon as the wife and chil
dren were comfortably housed
the father sought work and found
it in a logging camp at 35 per
month and board. During Sep
tember and October he worked
steadily, and upon the $70 thus
earned himself and family lived
through the winter. During this
time the father was not idle. By
the middle of April he had
cleared and fenced an acre of
bottom land where the work was
easy.
Again he went to work with the
loggers, this time for 40 per
month. The first month's pay
bought a cow and a calf and-by
fall he had 200 in cash. In the
meantime the wife had raised a
fine garden, including a supply of
potatoes for the winter.
The outcome of this tort of
diligence steadily pursued through
six years is a property free from
debt, a frame house of six rooms
comfortably furnished, a meadow
of ten acres cleared and under
fence, a two-acre garden tract, a
good bam with out sheds, ten
cows and a small herd of young
stock, three horses, a wagon,
plows, etc. The improvements
and stock on the place are certain
ly worth 1,800, and the land it
self (with 1,000 -worth of timber
standing) is worth at least as
much more. How many men have
done better in six years? In the
meantime the children have been
at work five or six months of each
year, and the oldest, now a man of
twenty, has earned 40 per month
during the current summer in a
logging camp.
There are opportunities of this
kind for as manj' as can possibly
come. The case in poinr, while
one of exceptional thrift, "was not
one of exceptional opportunity.
The work was hard and the living
not luxurious. For the first two
years the family lived in the
cheapest way possible consistent
with common "comfort. There
were no luxuries of table, furni
niture or dress, nothing for the
sake of appearance, nothing was
spent in pleasuring, not a cent
was wasted on liquor or tobacco.
To the business of making a home
was devoted good health, the in
dustry of a man and woman both
trained to labor, diligence and
close economy. With these vir
tues any family may succeed in
Oregon or elsewhere; without
them any family will fail. Orc

What They Say at Seattle.
Wishing to find out something
about the status of the salmon
business on the sound since the
organization of the fishermen's
union, which at once raised the
price of fish to 10 cents, a reporter
called upon a number of persons
conversant with the matter, and
asked for some light on the sub
ject. George T. Myers Skip me this
time, please, and talk to the oth
ers. You have had so much to
say about my cannery of late that
people are getting tired of it. I
have put up some fresh in cans
and some in barrels, but have so
far been disappointed in the run.
Mr. Tuttle, manager of the can
nery at Mukilteo "We have not
packed any fish yet, as we were
not ready when the run com
menced. What fish our men have
caught we have sent to Mr. Myers,
and he will return them when we
are ready for them. We fitted
out a lot of Indians with seines
and put them to work. They
were contented and satisfied, until
a lot of Greeks, who had nothing
to do, came and intimidated them.
Several of tham have told me they
would like to work, but are
afraid. We have uot decided yet
what course we will pursue, but if
the canneries will stand in togeth
er, they can get fish at a reasona
ble figure.
n. E. Levy, who for some years
past has been engaged in pack
ing salmon, but who is not en
gaged in the business this year,
said: "The action of the union
in raising the price of fish 100
per cent, over the highest price
ever before paid by packers for
them is ridiculous and I will show
you why. They now ask ten
cents for salmon. It takes sixty
to fill a barrel, thus making the
first cost of the fish in a barrel
6. To this -you ntust add the
cost of cleaning, salting and pack
ing, and of the barrel, and ou
have a total cost of about 8, and
the barrel of fish, when ready for
the market, will not bring over S7
in Seattle. The proportion is
about the same in canning. If I
was in the business this 3'ear 1
would hire independent Indians or
Chinamen to catch 1113' fish, and
would not touch one caught by
any member of the union until
that organization show a disposi
tion to do what is fair in the mat
ter. Post-Intelligencer 28.

I have usg.rJ Allcock's Pobods
PLAStfias for the last twenty years.
They are truly a household remedy.
If one of my children has a cold and
wheezes, I put an Aixcocx's Poaous
Plaster on the chest and ono be
tween the shoulder blades. If any
of the children have croupy coughs,
or coughs of any kind, I place the
Plaster close up around the threat;
the soothing effect is apparent almost
always in two hours. If they have
a disordered stomach, a Plaster
placed just below the chest bones
makes digestion perfect in half a day.
If there is any looseness of "the
bowels, accompanied by coldness of
the skin, two Allcock's Porous
Plasters applied over the stomach
cure in from two to five hours. I
notice particularly that these Plas
ters'never abrade the skin or cause
the slightest irritation. From my
own experience I know they never
fail for rheumatism, - pains in the
hack or lumbago.
